Book Regularity of Minimal Surfaces

Download or read book Regularity of Minimal Surfaces written by Ulrich Dierkes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regularity of Minimal Surfaces begins with a survey of minimal surfaces with free boundaries. Following this, the basic results concerning the boundary behaviour of minimal surfaces and H-surfaces with fixed or free boundaries are studied. In particular, the asymptotic expansions at interior and boundary branch points are derived, leading to general Gauss-Bonnet formulas. Furthermore, gradient estimates and asymptotic expansions for minimal surfaces with only piecewise smooth boundaries are obtained. One of the main features of free boundary value problems for minimal surfaces is that, for principal reasons, it is impossible to derive a priori estimates. Therefore regularity proofs for non-minimizers have to be based on indirect reasoning using monotonicity formulas. This is followed by a long chapter discussing geometric properties of minimal and H-surfaces such as enclosure theorems and isoperimetric inequalities, leading to the discussion of obstacle problems and of Plateau ́s problem for H-surfaces in a Riemannian manifold. A natural generalization of the isoperimetric problem is the so-called thread problem, dealing with minimal surfaces whose boundary consists of a fixed arc of given length. Existence and regularity of solutions are discussed. The final chapter on branch points presents a new approach to the theorem that area minimizing solutions of Plateau ́s problem have no interior branch points.

Book Mathematical Congress of the Americas

Download or read book Mathematical Congress of the Americas written by Jimmy Petean and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the First Mathematical Congress of the Americas, held from August 5-9, 2013, in Guanajuato, México. With the participation of close to 1,000 researchers from more than 40 countries, the meeting set a benchmark for mathematics in the two continents. The papers, written by some of the plenary and invited speakers, as well as winners of MCA awards, cover new developments in classic topics such as Hopf fibrations, minimal surfaces, and Markov processes, and provide recent insights on combinatorics and geometry, isospectral spherical space forms, homogenization on manifolds, and Lagrangian cobordism, as well as applications to physics and biology.

Book Minimal Surfaces in Riemannian Manifolds

Download or read book Minimal Surfaces in Riemannian Manifolds written by Min Ji and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1990 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies the structure of the set of all coboundary minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds. The authors establish, on a solid analytical foundation, a flexible topological index theory which proves useful for the study of minimal surfaces. One of the highlights of the work is the result that for every Jordan curve on the standard $n$-sphere, there exist at least two minimal surfaces bounded by the curve.

Book Minimal Surfaces in Riemannian Manifolds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multiple solution theory to the Plateau problem in a Riemannian manifold is established. In [italic capital]S[superscript italic]n, the existence of two solutions to this problem is obtained. The Morse-Tompkins-Shiffman Theorem is extended to the case when the ambient space admits no minimal sphere.
