Download or read book Kenwood Paintings in the Iveagh Bequest written by Julius Bryant and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set high on a ridge in historic parkland less than five miles from Trafalgar Square, Kenwood is London's favourite 'country house'. Remodelled by Robert Adam in the eighteenth century, in 1928 it became the home of the Iveagh Bequest, a superb collection of old master paintings that includes Rembrandt's most celebrated self-portrait, the only Vermeer in England outside the National Gallery and the Royal Collection, Gainsborough's Countess Howe, and classic works by Reynolds, Romney, Lawrence and Turner. The collection was formed between 1887 and 1891 by Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh, Chairman of the world's leading brewery, who gave it to the nation with the house and estate. This book is published to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the Iveagh Bequest and is the first new catalogue of the collection to be produced in fifty years. It discusses each work, revealing the personalities behind the faces in the portraits, the social circumstances of each commission, and the way that art met the ambitions of artists, patrons, sitters and collectors. There are also two introductory essays that provide context for the house and discuss the ways in which Lord Iveagh was a pioneer collector. Beautifully produced, this catalogue of paintings is the essential book on Kenwood.

Download or read book British and Irish Paintings in Public Collections written by Christopher Wright and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets a new standard as a work of reference. It covers British and Irish art in public collections from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the nineteenth, and it encompasses nearly 9,000 painters and 90,000 paintings in more than 1,700 separate collections. The book includes as well pictures that are now lost, some as a consequence of the Second World War and others because of de-accessioning, mostly from 1950 to about 1975 when Victorian art was out of fashion. By listing many tens of thousands of previously unpublished works, including around 13,000 which do not yet have any form of attribution, this book becomes a unique and indispensable work of reference, one that will transform the study of British and Irish painting.

Download or read book Glenn Brown written by Glenn Brown and published by Holzwarth Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British painter Glenn Brown's fourth exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin took place at the gallery's temporary space: a small, well-lit apartment in the Charlottenburg district. This superbly produced, oversized publication records both the works and their intimate installation with extraordinary gatefolds that scrutinize the sensuous surfaces of Brown's paintings and sculptures. Full of technical virtuosity and grotesque exaggeration, these works based on reproductions of historical art include a traditional flower painting mutated into bouquets of orifices; a portrait of an old man in sickly colors; fragmented female torsos; and sculptures smothered in thick chunks of oil paint. The extraordinary tension between relish and repulsion achieved by the sculptures can provoke extreme reactions of delight or fascination, as this volume reveals.

Download or read book Landscape between Ideology and the Aesthetic written by Andrew Hemingway and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of growing interest in relations between Marxism and Romanticism, Andrew Hemingway’s essays on British art and art theory reopen the question of Romantic painting’s ideological functions and, in some cases, its critical purchase. Half the volume exposes the voices of competing class interests in aesthetics and art theory in the tumultuous years of British history between the American Revolution and the 1832 Parliamentary Reform Act. Half offers new perspectives on works by some of the most important landscape painters of the time: John Constable, J.M.W. Turner, John Crome, and John Sell Cotman. Four essays are hitherto unpublished, and the remainder have been updated and in several cases substantially rewritten for this volume.
