This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of "Fakes" And Reproductions Some of these reproductions have deceived the best experts. AS stated in Lady Charlotte Schreiber's Journals, this noted collector, as long ago as 1878, bought in Madrid some lovely vases. A friend after wards expressed a doubt as to their genuineness, and when She and her husband arrived in Paris they took the cover of one of the vases to the manufacturer, who owned himself the maker of it. So those vases, She writes, have proved themselves all wrong and cannot go into the collection. I fear we Shall lose heavily on them, but they are so pretty that I regret them more for their beauty than for the money's worth. This has been rather a costly lesson. Book excerpt: "Fakes, Forgeries, and Other Deceptions,' a unique show organized by Samuel Sachs II, acting director of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, was exhibited in 1973 and was the first such exhibit of fakes and forgeries by a major museum in over 20 years. The catalogue includes over 240 forgeries and originals in styles from ancient art to the present. Some of the forgeries are so outrageously bad that even an untrained eye can detect the original; but more often the fakes are subtle and convincing, and in these instances modern technology, x-ray analysis, spectroscopic examination, and pigment comparison have been necessary to separate the fakes from the originals. The truly education character of both the exhibition and the catalogue lies in Mr. Sachs' learned and lively comparisons between the genuine and the fake, and both are juxtaposed on the same page with accompanying text.

  • Author : Hillel Schwartz
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Culture of the Copy written by Hillel Schwartz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Culture of the Copy is an unprecedented attempt to make sense of the Western fascination with replicas, duplicates, and twins. In a work that is breathtaking in its synthetic and critical achievements, Hillel Schwartz charts the repercussions of our entanglement with copies of all kinds, whose presence alternately sustains and overwhelms us. Through intriguing, and at times humorous, historical analysis and case studies in contemporary culture, Schwartz investigates a stunning array of simulacra—counterfeits, decoys, mannequins, and portraits; ditto marks, genetic cloning, war games, and camouflage; instant replays, digital imaging, parrots, and photocopies; wax museums, apes, and art forgeries, not to mention the very notion of the Real McCoy. Working through a range of theories on biological, mechanical, and electronic reproduction, Schwartz questions the modern esteem for authenticity and uniqueness. The Culture of the Copy shows how the ethical dilemmas central to so many fields of endeavor have become inseparable from our pursuit of copies—of the natural world, of our own creations, indeed of our very selves. This updated edition takes notice of recent shifts in thought with regard to such issues as biological cloning, conjoined twins, copyright, digital reproduction, and multiple personality disorder. At once abbreviated and refined, it will be of interest to anyone concerned with proglems of authenticity, identity, and originality.

Book excerpt: In the mid 1930s, in the workroom of Parisian jeweler Boivin, a jewelry designer created one of the most coveted pieces of jewelry in the world: the famous starfish pin. Created out of gold and encrusted with 71 cabochon rubies and 241 small amethysts, the starfish was distinctive because its five rays were articulated, meaning that they could curl and conform to the bustline or shoulder of the women who wore it. The House of Boivin made three of them. After seeing it in the showroom of a Manhattan jewelry merchant, Burns set off on a journey to find out all she could about the elusive pins and the women who owned them.
