Book Exfoliation Corrosion Testing of 7178 and 7075 Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Exfoliation Corrosion Testing of 7178 and 7075 Aluminum Alloys written by PW. Jeffrey and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As special heat treatments to improve resistance of aluminum alloys to exfoliation were developed, the need for accelerated testing methods to control production heat treatment arose. A joint task group formed by ASTM Committee GO1.05 and the Aluminum Association has conducted an interlaboratory testing program of various salt spray and immersion tests for 7000 series alloys. A constant immersion test produced the best results.

Book Exfoliation Corrosion Testing of 7075 and 7178 Aluminum Alloys Interim Report on Atmospheric Exposure Tests

Download or read book Exfoliation Corrosion Testing of 7075 and 7178 Aluminum Alloys Interim Report on Atmospheric Exposure Tests written by DO. Sprolws and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric exposures of 18 to 39 months have been completed at seacoast and inland industrial locations to determine the resistance to exfoliation corrosion of specially heat-treated test panels of high-strength aluminum alloys. Two seacoast locations, one at Point Judith, Rhode Island, and another at Daytona Beach, Florida, were selected, together with an industrial location near Chicago, Illinois, to represent the relatively severe atmospheric conditions to which aluminum alloy aircraft structures are subjected in service. The purpose of these tests was to demonstrate the relationship of the performances in the accelerated exfoliation corrosion tests previously evaluated by this task group with those in relatively aggressive natural environments.

Book Exfoliation Corrosion Testing of Aluminum Lithium Alloys

Download or read book Exfoliation Corrosion Testing of Aluminum Lithium Alloys written by JJ. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was performed comparing the corrosion resistance of new aluminum alloys in shipboard environments with accelerated laboratory corrosion test environments. The aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys tested were 2020-T651, 2090-T8E41, and 8090-T851. For comparison, 7075 aluminum was tested in the exfoliation susceptible T651 temper and the resistant T7351 temper. Shipboard exposures were performed aboard aircraft carriers deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, and to the Indian Ocean during the monsoon season. Accelerated laboratory tests performed were EXCO (ASTM G 34-86), sulfur dioxide salt fog (ASTM G 85.A4-85), and MASTMAASIS (ASTM G 85.A2-85).

Book The Effect of Aging on the Exfoliation Corrosion Characteristics of 7178 Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book The Effect of Aging on the Exfoliation Corrosion Characteristics of 7178 Aluminum Alloy written by J. James Slavick and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The objective of this investigation was twofold: 1) to determine the effect of the quench-to-artificial aging delay period on the exfoliation corrosion of 7178 aluminum alloy subsequently aged at 250F for 24 hours and 2) to determine the effect of an initial aging treatment at 212F on the tensile properties and exfoliation of 7178 aluminum subsequently aged at 250F. Testing was conducted on 0.125 inch thick sheet. Quench-to-aging delay periods of 0 to 28 days, and initial artificial aging treatments at 212F for 24 and 48 hours were investigated. In addition, the effect of overaging T6 material at 320F for 13 hours was determined. The results of this investigation indicated that, for 7178 aluminum quenched sufficiently rapid from the solution treating temperature to prevent exfoliation in the T6 temper: 1) A quench-to-aging delay period of up to 28 days does not affect exfoliation characteristics when the alloy is subsequently aged at 250F for 24 hours. 2) Overaging beyond the T6 condition can produce susceptibility to exfoliation corrosion. 3) Underaging at 212F for 24 hours produces a high susceptibility to exfoliation corrosion. However, an additional heat treatment at 250F for as short a period as 8 hours will impart resistance to exfoliation. 4) Initial aging treatments at 212F for either 24 or 48 hours tend to reduce the maximum yield strength obtainable by a final heat treatment at 250F"--Abstract, leaf ii.
