Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Misericords of Exeter Cathedral In the effigy the mitre has pendent straps which spring out on each side; perhaps traces of these were left when the boss was broken off, leading the restorer to conclude there had been a veil there. The restoration of the boss is beautifully done, the join is almost imperceptible, but in the thirteenth century the artist would not have made one boss a replica of the other; there were always divergences, however slight. Above all one regrets the inappropriate introduction of the woman's head: it 'would have been so simple to copy that of Bishop Marshall from his effigy. Book Exeter Cathedral Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exeter Cathedral In outline and character generally, this fine church is unique. There are larger churches and loftier churches there are, as at Wells and Salisbury, cathedral churches more picturesquely situated, but nowhere is there a cathedral of greater originality, of more complete harmony, of more obvious and striking unity. The church of Exeter, says Dr. Freeman, who by the breadth of his knowledge was more than most men competent to say it, forms a class by itself. As far as detail goes, he adds, no building of its age shows us the taste of that age in greater perfection. It does not hold its high place in the hierarchy of churches in virtue of the area of ground which it covers. It does not rank in magnitude with the great cathedral of Wessex, or the greater church of Canterbury, or with Lincoln, or with York. But in originality, in harmony, in unity, it bears comparison with the proudest of them all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cathedral Church of Exeter

Download or read book The Cathedral Church of Exeter written by Percy Addleshaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral Church of Exeter: A Description of Its Fabric and a Brief History of the Episcopal See This series of monographs has been planned to supply visitors to the great English Cathedrals with accurate and well illus trated guide books at a popular price. The aim of each writer has been to produce a work compiled with sufficient knowledge and scholarship to be of value to the student of archaeology and history, and yet not too technical in language for the use of an ordinary visitor or tourist. To specify all the authorities which have been made use of in each case would be difficult and tedious in this place. But amongst the general sources of information which have been almost invariably found useful are - firstly, the great county histories, the value of which, especially in questions of genealogy and local records, is generally recognized secondly, the numerous papers by experts which appear from time to time in the transactions of the antiquarian and archaeological societies thirdly, the important documents made accessible in the series issued by the Master of the Rolls fourthly, the well known works of Britton and Willis on the English Cathedrals and, lastly, the very excellent series of Handbooks to the Cathedrals, originated by the late Mr. John Murray, to which the reader may in most cases be referred for fuller detail, especially in reference to the histories of the respective sees.
