Book Exercises in Practical Physics

Download or read book Exercises in Practical Physics written by Arthur Schuster and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1901, this book was intended for students of physics to become acquainted with the principles and methods of accurate measurement in laboratories. Aimed as a reference guide for undergraduates to develop and reinforce their understanding of elementary physics, the book is divided into six sections: preliminary, general physics, heat, sound, light, and magnetism and electricity. Within each of these sections, multiple experiments are contained and instructions are provided on how to carry out each experiment, whilst notes are also provided for teachers on how to measure and check accurately the results obtained. Multiple diagrams and tables are also included throughout to assist with learning. This book will be a valuable resource to students, teachers and researchers of physics and to anyone with an interest in the history of science education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to demonstrate the purpose and critical approach that should be made to all experimental work in physics. It does not describe a systematic course in practical work. The present edition retains the basic outlook of earlier editions, but modifications have been made in response to important changes in computational and experimental methods in the past decade. The text is in three parts. The first deals with the statistical treatment of data, and here the text has been extensively revised to take account of the now widespread use of electronic calculators. The second deals with experimental methods, giving details of particular experiments that demonstrate the art and craft of the experimenter. The third part deals with such essential matters as keeping efficient records, accuracy in arithmetic, and writing good, scientific English. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

Book Advanced Exercises in Practical Physics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Exercises in Practical Physics This volume is intended for students who, having obtained an elementary knowledge of experimental work in Physics, desire to become acquainted with the principles and methods of accurate measurement. The large and increasing number of students, who have to be taught simultaneously in a Physical Laboratory, renders it necessary that the instructions supplied should be fairly complete; and that the exercises should be of such a nature as to enable the teachers easily to check the accuracy of the results obtained. The exercises described in this volume have been worked through by several hundred students of the Owens College who were preparing for the ordinary degree of B.Sc., and the experience thus gained has been utilised to improve the descriptions and methods adopted. It is hoped therefore that the volume will also prove useful in other laboratories. We have not aimed at completeness, being convinced that a student learns more by carefully working through a few selected and typical exercises, than by hurrying through large number, which are often but slight modifications of each other. The guiding principle we have adopted in our teaching has been to attach greater importance to neat and accurate work, properly recorded, than to the number of experiments which a student performs. All Note-books are carefully kept, no slovenly work is allowed to pass, and each exercise is repeated until satisfactory results have been obtained.
