I TAKE this as the text of our third chapter, and in it we will discuss the best manner of doing both, with regard to each article and material mentioned in the preceding tables. I will begin with the materials, etc., necessary and suitable for winter wear. Of these, after much experience, I have come to the conclusion that there are but three kinds really nice and ladylike and at the same time within our means, --namely, tweed, linsey, and serge. There is yet another woollen material, viz., Irish home-spun frieze, but this can perhaps hardly be classed with the foregoing, being of an exceptional character, and only suitable under peculiar circumstances. These materials, if good of their kind, can thoroughly be depended upon. I should like to add Irish poplin, on account of its interminable wear, but it is almost too expensive for us to think of, being somewhat above five shillings per yard, which would amount to the cost of a silk dress, but of which, nevertheless, it does not entirely take the place. Of the three that I have recommended I have given the first place to the tweed, as being the most serviceable. I have elsewhere remarked that, with few exceptions, it is the truest economy to buy the best of its kind in everything. If you cannot afford an expensive article you must be content with a common one, only be particular that it is good of its sort: believe me, it is wise in the end.
