Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine the relationships among self-efficacy, self-motivation, and physical activity. Selected college students were recruited as they entered a southern Illinois fitness facility. Mean age of participants was 24.13+.036. Participation consisted of completing a series of surveys that measure exercise self-efficacy, self-motivation to exercise, and physical activity behavior over the two-week span prior to participation. Exercise self-efficacy was recorded on a 0-20 scale. Mean scores were 14.18+3.50. Self-motivation to exercise was recorded on a scale ranging from 7-35. Mean self-motivation scores were 24.38 + 3.93. Physical activity was measured in number of days participants reported being moderately to vigorously physically active in the two weeks prior to their participation. The theoretical range of scores was 0-14. Mean physical activity scores were 7.81 + 3.15. Correlation analysis revealed positive moderate correlations among all three variables (self-efficacy to physical activity, r = .462; self-motivation to physical activity, r = .421; self-efficacy to self-motivation, r = .411). Additionally, multiple regression analysis revealed self-efficacy to be the strongest single predictor of physical activity. Book excerpt: "Research indicates that many athletes fail to maintain regular physical activity participation after transitioning out of competitive sports. Despite the important health consequences for athletes who drop from high activity to inactivity after completing their athletic careers, long-term physical activity maintenance among former college athletes is understudied. The present study examined physical activity behavior in former college athletes. Previous research suggests that self-identity influences physical activity participation, and individuals who are motivated by self-determined and volitional reasons are more likely to maintain their exercise behavior over time. Therefore, this research examined a theoretical model that incorporates tenets of identity theory and self-determination theory to investigate the relationships among identity, motivation, and physical activity participation in former college athletes. A total of 282 former Division I college athletes completed an online survey consisting of the Exercise Identity Scale, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Behavioral Regulation for Exercise Questionnaire, the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire, and demographic items. Results suggest that exercise identity and athletic identity are both positively related to physical activity in former college athletes, and the identity - physical activity relationship was only partially mediated by self-determined forms of motivation. Exercise identity was a stronger predictor of self-determined motivation and physical activity compared to athletic identity. There was a significant interaction effect between exercise identity and athletic identity such that having a higher exercise identity strengthened the athletic identity - physical activity relationship. Path analyses are presented that model the direct and indirect effects among the identity, motivation, and physical activity variables. The relevant implications of these models for former college athletes and their participation in physical activity are discussed. The findings of this study add to our understanding of former college athletes' physical activity behavior within an identity and self-determination theory framework, and provide an evidence base to guide the development of appropriate interventions that can promote healthy, active lifestyles among current and future student-athletes."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Despite the well-established benefits of physical activity, current interventions to promote physical activity produce only small to moderate effects that are poorly maintained. Social cognitive theories have attempted to explain behavior, identifying self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, and self-regulation as potentially important predictors of physical activity engagement. However, self-regulation has rarely been measured by processes such as distress tolerance (the ability to persist in a psychologically or physically distressing task) or executive function (a complex set of neurocognitive processes that enable self-directed behavior), which underlie the ability to regulate behavior. The current study aimed to evaluate self-regulation, measured by physical and psychological distress tolerance, delay discounting, set-shifting, and complex problem-solving as predictors of physical activity intention, physical activity behavior, and the relationship between intention and behavior in a sample of individuals at the six-month point of a behavioral weight loss program. Results revealed that self-regulatory ability may predict intention and behavior, specifically that physical distress tolerance is positively associated with intention and delay discounting is positively associated with behavior. No measure of self-regulation was associated with the gap between intention and behavior. Delay discounting may, however, moderate the relationship between intention and behavior. Finally, several interactions between physical distress tolerance and executive function variables indicate that deficits in one measure of self-regulation may moderate the relationship between other measures of self-regulation and physical activity intention and behavior. Results indicate that self-regulation may be an important and understudied area of research with regard to physical activity. Future research should seek to further delineate these relationships in order to inform treatment development.
