Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Two Wars: An Illustrated History of Our War With Spain and Our War With the Filipinos; Their Causes, Incidents, and Results; A Record of Civil, Military, and Naval Operations From Official Sources Of General Lee I need say but little. His valuable services to his country in his trying position are too well known to all his countrymen to require mention. Besides his ability, high character, and courage, he possesses the impor tant requisites of unfailing tact and courtesy, and, withal, his military education and training and his soldierly qualities are invaluable adjuncts in the equipment of our representative in a country so completely under military rule as was Cuba. General Lee kindly invited us to Sit at his table at the hotel during our stay in Havana, and this opportunity for frequent informal talks with him was of great help to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War in the Philippines: And Life and Glorious Deeds of Admiral Dewey, a Thrilling Account of Our Conflicts With the Spaniards and Filipinos in the Orient In the first week of May, 1808, while the people of the United States were eagerly watching events in Cuba, while the attention of all was turned toward the island that promised to be the focal point, in the pending Spanish-American war, this message flashed across the sea from the distant islands of the Western Pacific: "Not one Spanish Hag flies in Manila Pay to-day. Not one Spanish warship floats, except as our prize." The brilliant victory that Admiral Dewey won over the Spanish fleet in the Philippines aroused the United States to the highest pitch of enthusiasm. For the moment Cuba was forgotten, and all public interest was directed toward this distant fighting center. Patriotism ran high. The "stars and stripes" and Admiral Dewey's picture were everywhere displayed. Praise of the man was heard on all sides. No such deed of valor and skilled man uvering had been known since the days of Farragut, and for a time it was thought that the battle of Manila Bay would end the war. To-day the war is ended. Messages telling of brilliant and surprising victories are no longer sent from south and east; bulletins are no longer posted in the streets; but, while the American nation is bravely assuming the "White Man's Burden," the result of its great conquest, it becomes the part of History to commemorate the events of the war, of which the first and most decisive took place on that pleasant May morning when the people of Manila and Cavite awoke to find the American squadron at their doors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iniquity in High Places: As Revealed in the American Spanish Filipino Wars of 1898, 1899 and Subsequent Years The moment two primitive animal organisms make a simultaneous attempt to appropriate one and the same article of food there arises a conflict of inter ests which speedily culminates in a resort to violence and force. The constant recurrence of these scenes of violence would naturally and inevitably develop a Spirit of pugnacity, a disposition to fight. And as the animal organism in the process of evolution rose to a higher plane of life this spirit of pugnacity would grow with its growth and strengthen with its strength. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conflict With Spain: A History of the War, Based Upon Official Reports and Descriptions of Eye-Witnesses N the ensuing pages the reader will find the record of one of the most astonishing transformations in the history of peoples. The plain tale as set forth rivals the enchantments of feudal conquest, when the world made war a part of its daily life. For though in point of time, the con ict with Spain embraced but the duration of three months, the prodigies performed by our eets rival a century's activities in other times. In an hour almost, one of our eets conquered an Oriental empire - dating back coevally with the settlement of our own states; at our very doors, in the sea which has witnessed colossal struggles of most of the powers of Christendom, our navy in three hours ended the domination of the once world power. And if our armies did not equal in these achievements, the marvels of the eets, they performed wherever called upon, all that a heroic soldiery was ever asked to do. The tale as it unrolls itself from the far-o ' shores of the Philippines and the coral reefs of the Caribbean, takes on the texture of the most absorbingly thrilling romance, for it in volves the dauntless heroism of the knight pledged to deeds of emprise and armies consecrated to peril in every form known in war. It reveals a galaxy of heroes added to the long list whose names shine in the golden legend of our creation and maintenance as a state. From this tale, the citizen of the republic will rise with a new confidence in our system, a new hope in our destiny. For from the Opening guns at Manila to the last volley at Santiago, there was not a man under the ag who did not. And does not deserve well, of his country. As much as possible I have striven to let the heroes who wrought so grandly tell the story of their achievements in their own words. From the captivating confidences of the Hero Hobson to the caustic comment of General Miles, the reader will find side by side with the author's deductions and appreciations, the testimony of every actor in the grandiose drama which qonstitutes the miraculous conquest of three months. Book The War in the Philippines Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War in the Philippines Classic Reprint written by Harry Laurenz Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the Philippines As soon as the alarm was given the American troops were immediately under arms and took the posi tions assigned to them. Some occupied positions of vantage about the city to quell any uprising, and others hastened to the outskirts to prevent the enemy from entering. The fight continued, with occasional lulls, throughout the entire night, the Americans remaining strictly on the defensive, only firing sufficiently to pre vent the Filipinos from advancing, while the enemy poured in a heavy fire on all sides, wasting thousands of rounds of ammunition in the dark. When morning came the insurrectos had gained nothing, and up to that time our losses had been very light. During the night intelligence of the attack on the city was flashed to the fleet at Cavite by the patrol Ships off Manila by search light Signals cast on the Sky, and the ships in the same way received their orders to aid in the counter attack that was being planned to take place at daylight. In the morning the American troops advanced and drove the Filipinos from their positions all along the line. This was undoubtedly a great surprise to them, accustomed as they had been, in fighting with the Spaniards, to make their attacks solely under cover of darkness and keep out of sight in the day time. The Filipinos resisted the first attack with considerable stubbornness, apparently not realizing that the Americans would continue to advance in Spite of the terrific fire and actually charge their breastworks. The result of this resistance was seen when the Americans passed over their lines, in the heaps of dead and wounded that lay in their trenches and along the ground immediately to their rear, the latter being shot while fleeing in terror before the line of blue and brown advancing with cheers and yells. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the United States prosecuted a bloody campaign to pacify its newly won Philippines territory at the turn of the nineteenth century, a secret mission of mercy went terribly wrong. The result was a prisoner-of-war crisis, the likes of which our nation had never encountered before. The epic struggle for survival that followed was not only a test of the human will to live, but a crucible for heroes. And yet, what was touted as a heroic rescue operation extended a war by almost two years and cost the lives of thousands. In April 1899, Admiral George Dewey dispatched the USS Yorktown to liberate a detachment of Spanish soldiers under siege by Filipino rebels. To reconnoiter enemy defenses, one of the Yorktown’s armed cutters—manned by a crew of fifteen sailors—was sent toward shore. And then it happened. Defying orders, Lieutenant James C. Gillmore Jr. recklessly pushed upriver into heavy jungle—and headlong into an ambush that would kill four of his men. The survivors were dragged across mountains and through dense jungle from one pestilent prison to the next along what Gillmore called “a veritable Devil’s Causeway.” Their captivity and the torturous expedition sent to recover them, recalled today as one of the greatest marches in US Army history, features a tightly hewn cast of characters—including a frail yet determined teenaged sailor and his hardened seafaring mates; battle-tested veterans of the Civil War and the Indian Wars; and a fiery revolutionary commander who gave orders to bury wounded Americans alive. A sweeping military epic drawing on international primary sources, The Devil’s Causeway tells their extraordinary story in its entirety for the first time.
