Book Exchange Rate Policy for MERCOSUR

Download or read book Exchange Rate Policy for MERCOSUR written by Silvia Marengo and published by Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 1998 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question as to the choice of the optimal exchange rate system to be adopted among MERCOSUR countries becomes critical if MERCOSUR states attempt to go further along the path of increasing their trade flows of goods and services. The study contributes to filling this gap by providing some alternative answers to this issue. The analysis has been based on three pillars: a theoretical review of exchange rate systems: a review of the European experience; and an analysis of the Latin American experience.

Book Transatlantic Perspectives on the Euro

Download or read book Transatlantic Perspectives on the Euro written by C. Randall Henning and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and the European Community Studies Association publication The European economic and monetary union has changed the structure of international monetary relations fundamentally. In this book two experts--one European, the other American--offer transatlantic perspectives on the ramifications of the monetary union and the launch of the euro. C. Randall Henning examines selected American views on Europe's monetary union, and looks at the political, economic, and institutional interests of the United States as they are affected by the creation of the euro. He examines the external monetary policymaking machinery of the union and discusses the relationship of the monetary union to international institutions, particularly the meetings of the G-7 finance ministers and central bank governors and the International Monetary Fund. Henning is generally sympathetic to European integration, supportive of the monetary union, and persuaded of the importance of international cooperation. Pier Carlo Padoan presents a European view of the role of the euro in the international system. He looks at the euro as a potential global currency and examines the transition phase between a regional currency and a global currency. Central to this is an analysis of the appropriate exchange rate policy for the euro. He also considers euro-dollar relations and the prospects for transatlantic cooperation. C. Randall Henning is a professor at The American University and a senior fellow at the Institute for International Economics. Pier Carlo Padoan is a professor at the University of Rome and the College of Europe.

This book discusses the future of MERCOSUR, focusing on monetary union and macroeconomic policy co-ordination, and addresses a number of important questions including: is it possible, or even desirable, to achieve monetary integration?; what would the pre-conditions be for establishing such a union?; what would the convergence criteria be for joining the monetary union?; and what are the expected economic consequences for the member countries? of EMU and the lessons which can be learnt by MERCOSUR countries, in terms of the difficult transitions they may have to face.

Book The Monetary Consequences of a Free Trade Area of the Americas

Download or read book The Monetary Consequences of a Free Trade Area of the Americas written by Barry J. Eichengreen and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will free trade affect monetary policy and exchange rate regime choices in the Americas? While the European Union illustrates how the creation of an integrated market in goods and services can enhance monetary cooperation and integration, it is not clear that Europe's experience translates to Latin America, where the political circumstances are different. We try to understand whether the monetary consequences of existing regional trade agreements, including but not limited to the European Union, mainly reflect spillovers from trade integration, or whether observed outcomes have been mainly about politics. Our results incline us toward the latter interpretation, leaving us pessimistic about the basis for deeper monetary cooperation. If exchange rate volatility is to be tamed, then the more widespread adoption of inflation targeting, which we find to be associated with a significant reduction in bilateral exchange rate volatility, may be the most promising path.

Book The Impact of the Euro on Latin America

Download or read book The Impact of the Euro on Latin America written by Dorte Verner and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Trade between the European Union (EU) and developing countries is important--around 22 percent of the EU's exports go to developing countries, while 20 percent of the EU's imports originate in those countries. More specifically, trade between Latin America and the EU has ballooned in recent times...' What are the risks and opportunities facing the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region from the introduction of the euro? Will the replacement of the European currency basket by the euro have real economic effects, or will it be little more than an accounting phenomenon? This slim volume attempts to answer those questions. In doing so it covers the current economic situation, presents financial flow, discusses the value and volatility of the euro, and the financial implications of the euro, including the banking system and foreign debt and reserve management. Overall, the report gives a broad picture of the possible impact of the euro on the LAC region.

Book Regional Monetary Integration

Download or read book Regional Monetary Integration written by Peter B. Kenen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-26 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the prospects for regional monetary integration in various parts of the world. Beginning with a brief review of the theory of optimal currency areas, it goes on to examine the structure and functioning of the European Monetary Union, then turns to the prospects for monetary integration elsewhere in the world - North America, South America, and East Asia. Such cooperation may take the form of full-fledged monetary unions or looser forms of monetary cooperation. The book emphasizes the economic and institutional requirements for successful monetary integration, including the need for a single central bank in the case of a full-fledged monetary union, and the corresponding need for multinational institutions to safeguard its independence and assure its accountability. The book concludes with a chapter on the implications of monetary integration for the United States and the US dollar.

Book Exchange Rate Fluctuations and Trade Flows

Download or read book Exchange Rate Fluctuations and Trade Flows written by Mr.Giovanni Dell'Ariccia and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the effects of exchange rate volatility on bilateral trade flows. Through use of a gravity model and panel data from western Europe, exchange rate uncertainty is found to have a negative effect on international trade. The results seem to be robust with respect to the particular measures representing exchange rate uncertainty. Particular attention is reserved for problems of simultaneous causality. The negative correlation between trade and bilateral volatility remains significant after controlling for the simultaneity bias. However, a Hausman test rejects the hypothesis of the absence of simultaneous causality.
