Book EXAMINING THE ROLE OF GOAL ORIENTATIONS MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE AND SELF ESTEEM ON SELF HANDICAPPING BEHAVIOR IN DIVISION I COLLEGIATE ATHLETES

Download or read book EXAMINING THE ROLE OF GOAL ORIENTATIONS MOTIVATIONAL CLIMATE AND SELF ESTEEM ON SELF HANDICAPPING BEHAVIOR IN DIVISION I COLLEGIATE ATHLETES written by Joshua A. Cermak and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of the current study was threefold. The main purpose was to investigate the effects of motivational factors on self-handicapping (SH) in collegiate athletes. Second, this study aimed to examine the relationship between self-esteem and SH. Lastly, this study sought to explore gender differences in SH in athletes. Method: Collegiate athletes (N = 43) from the softball and baseball teams at a Midwestern Division I university completed surveys at three different time points. During the first assessment, athletes completed a battery of questionnaires assessing their trait SH, perceptions of the motivational climate, dispositional goal orientations, self-esteem, and ratings of game importance. The second and third assessments were determined by the athletes' game importance ratings. During assessments two and three, athletes were given the opportunity to claim impediments and coaches completed assessments of practice effort. Results: Initial multiple regression analyses revealed sport to be the only significant predictor for claimed SH. Thus, all subsequent analyses were conducted for softball and baseball separately. Mastery climate significantly predicted the number of claimed impediments (p

Book Parent Motivational Climate and Goal Orientations of Female Collegiate Athletes a Structural Equation Model

Download or read book Parent Motivational Climate and Goal Orientations of Female Collegiate Athletes a Structural Equation Model written by Tobie Lauren Langsam and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Parents are primary influencers in helping children maintain athletic involvement through adulthood (Dixon, Warner, & Bruening, 2008) . The study examined the relationships between parental motivational climates and goal orientations of female collegiate athletes {N = 349) from the Northeast. The questionnaires utilized were the Parent-Initiated Motivational Climate Questionnaire-2 (PIMCQ-2; White, 1996) and the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ; Duda, 1989) . A structural equation model was applied to better understand the relationships among Success-Without-Effort Climate, Learning/Enjoyment Climate, Worry-Conducive Climate, Task Orientation, and Ego Orientation. Model A had four Beta paths of Learning/Enjoyment Climate to Task (E = .43) and Ego Orientation (P = .12) and Worry-Conducive Climate and Success-Without-Effort Climate to Ego Orientation (T = .21 .27 respectively). Model B had three Beta paths of Learning/Enjoyment Climate to Task Orientation (T = .43) and Worry-Conducive Climate and Success-Without-Effort Climate to Ego Orientation (r = .16, .26 respectively). Both models had adequate fit. Examination into parental influence and collegiate athletes warrants future research.

Book Antecedents of Athlete s Achievement Goal Orientations

Download or read book Antecedents of Athlete s Achievement Goal Orientations written by Matthew Lachman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Theorized by Nicholls (1984), achievement goal theory describes the interaction of one's perceived ability and two goal orientations, known as "task" and "ego," that an athlete employs when setting goals. These goal orientations are what athletes employ when playing their sport. The result of this interaction is an athlete's achievement behavior. Previous research has examined this theory extensively (Newton & Duda, 1999; Chin, Khoo, & Low, 2012; Smoll, Smith, & Cumming, 2007; White & Zellner, 1996). However, few studies have solely looked at factors that predict one's achievement goal orientations. The purpose of this study is to address which demographic variables (Division, gender, and year in school) as well as the theoretical constructs of achievement goal theory (perceived competence and motivational climate) have the most influence in understanding an athlete's achievement goal orientations. Furthermore, this study will isolate each demographic variable and break it down into substrates (i.e. gender: male and female) to see if there were differences between them regarding the athlete's achievement goal orientations. Participants include 143 undergraduate students from universities across the Midwest and Southeastern United States. Results of the study indicated that mastery climate and Division type scores had an impact on an athlete's task score (r = .444, p =.001, r = .259, p =.048), while Division type was the sole predictor of an athlete's ego scores (r = -.340, p

Book An Examination of the Relationship Among TARGET Structures Team Motivational Climate and Achievement Goal Orientation

Download or read book An Examination of the Relationship Among TARGET Structures Team Motivational Climate and Achievement Goal Orientation written by Susan L. Becker and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research on sport motivation has focused primarily on goal perspective approaches in an attempt to understand behavior in achievement situations (Ames, 1984; Nicholls, 1984). According to Nicholls' (1984) theory, the achievement goal orientation an individual develops may be influenced by both individual differences and situational factors. Relative to situational factors, the team motivational climate may promote either a task-involved or an ego-involved orientation dependent upon which goal orientation is emphasized by the coach. In addition, Ames (1992a) argued that environmental structures influence the motivational climate which ultimately impact the athlete's achievement orientation. Educational research (Epstein, 1988) has identified specific environmental structures (TARGET structures) as being salient to the development of a mastery climate. Little research has been conducted on athletes' perceptions of their coaches' behavior, in regard to specific environmental structures, and how this may ultimately influence athletes' achievement goal orientation. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among TARGET structures, team motivational climate, and achievement goal orientation. The subjects consisted of 186 high school softball players and 171 high school baseball players, ranging in age from 14 to 18 years. The TEOSQ, PMCSQ, and TARGET questionnaires were administered to subjects at the beginning of a sport practice. LISREL8, a structural equation modeling program, was the statistical analysis employed. Results indicated that a positive linear relationship existed, linking task and reward/evaluation components of the TARGET structures to mastery climate to task orientation. These two structures may be the most salient structures within a sport setting. This finding suggests there is a positive association between coaches' promotion and employment of task-involved goals in their practices and athletes' perception of a mastery-oriented team motivational climate. Direct relationships linking three TARGET structures to performance climate to ego orientation were also reported. Grouping and authority components of the TARGET structures were found to have a significant inverse relationship with performance climate, while task structure and performance climate were positively related. Additionally, the results confirmed that there was a significant positive relationship between mastery climate and task orientation and between performance climate and ego orientation.

Book Relationship Between Collegiate Track Runners Achievement Goal Orientations and Perceptions of Motivational Climate

Download or read book Relationship Between Collegiate Track Runners Achievement Goal Orientations and Perceptions of Motivational Climate written by Sean P. McManus and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the achievement goal orientations and perceptions of motivational climate exhibited by intercollegiate athletes competing in track's two running disciplines--sprinting and distance running--and then to examine the relationship between the athletes' goal orientations and perceptions of motivational climate. Previous research in motivation in sport failed to make the distinction between these two different event groups within the sport of track. This failure to recognize track as being composed of two distinctly different event groups may have confounded the results of studies utilizing track athletes in examinations of motivation in sport across age, gender, time of season, and other variables.

Book Consequence of Winning

Download or read book Consequence of Winning written by Brandon H. Orr and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pilot study of a proposed model for examining the main and interactionist effects of achievement goal orientations on moral function and the role of perceived ability as a potential moderator in sport morality levels through cluster analysis procedures. One hundred and three elite (103) athletes participating in Division I wrestling completed the Task Ego Orientation in Sport Competition Questionnaire (TEOSQ-COMP; Harwood, 2002), Perceived Ability Inventory Subscale (PAI; Lemyre, et al., 2002), and Hahm-Beller Values Choice Inventory (HBVCI; Hahm, Beller, & Stoll, 1989). Analysis of motivation involved the investigation of motivation from a goal profile standpoint through cluster analysis. Cluster analysis revealed three emergent goal profile combinations: Cluster 1 - High-Ego/Moderate Task; Cluster 2 - Low-Ego/Moderate-Task; Cluster 3 - Moderate-Ego/High-Task. The emergent cluster profiles were then examined for between group interaction effects of goal orientation and perceived ability upon moral function. ANOVA revealed strong interactions between ego orientation and moral function for Clusters 1 and 2, but not at significant effect. As well the moderating interaction of perceived ability upon moral function for Clusters 1 and 2 was strong, but again not at significant levels. By building upon the investigation of competition as a contextualized variable of impact on motivation and moral function (Harwood, 2002; van de Pol & Kavussanu, 2012), this study proposes a more advanced model for investigating the interactionist effect between these two and the motivational climate of Division I sport.

Book The Relationship Between a Coach s Goal Orientation and Perceived Motivational Climate

Download or read book The Relationship Between a Coach s Goal Orientation and Perceived Motivational Climate written by Russell Rodenbeck and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between a coach's goal orientation and the motivational climate perceived by the players. The relationship between players' perceptions of the motivational climate and players' intrinsic motivation was also examined. This study was intended to provide evidence of how the coach's goal orientation affects the motivational climate perceived by players, and how perceived motivational climate influences intrinsic motivation. High school coaches and their players were contacted and participated in this study. Coaches (n = 18) and players (n = 187) filled out the Task and Ego in Sport Questionnaire and the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2. In addition, players filled out the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory. It was hypothesized that coach goal orientation and perceived motivational climate would be related, but the correlations between coach task goal orientation and player mastery climate (r = .283, p> .05), and between coach ego goal orientation and player performance motivational climate (r = -.265, p> .05) were not significant. Player mastery motivational climate was correlated with interest (r = .419, p

Download or read book Motivating Students to Learn written by Jere E. Brophy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-05-26 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written specifically for teachers, this book offers a wealth of research-based principles for motivating students to learn. Its focus on motivational principles rather than motivation theorists or theories leads naturally into discussion of specific classroom strategies. Throughout the book these principles and strategies are tied to the realities of contemporary schools and classrooms. The author employs an eclectic approach to motivation that shows how to effectively integrate the use of extrinsic and intrinsic strategies. Guidelines are provided for adapting motivational principles to group and individual differences and for doing "repair work" with students who have become discouraged or disaffected learners.

Book Perceived Coach Motivational Climate Goal Orientation and Intrinsic Motivation in Youth Sports

Download or read book Perceived Coach Motivational Climate Goal Orientation and Intrinsic Motivation in Youth Sports written by Marlon S. Melville and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to determine a causal relationship between the perceived coach motivational climate, goal orientation, andintrinsic motivation in youth sports. A total of 627 (male = 367; female 260) athletes between the age of 14 to 17 years from a sportcamp in Trinidad and Tobago took part in the study. Athletes completed a battery of tests that included the Motivational Climate Scalefor Youth Sport (MCSYS), Task Ego Orientation Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ), and Sport Motivational Scale-II (SMS-II). The goodness-of-fit indices including X2, RMSEA, CFI, NNFI, together with parameter estimate values indicated that the data did not fit the models.Cronbach's (1951) alpha reliability estimates suggested that the items were not measuring the relevant factorial structures. Thefindings suggest the need for further investigation of the cross-cultural generalizability of the achievement motivation theory in non-westernize cultures. Also, the need to develop questionnaires that indicate cross-cultural construct equivalence.

Book Mental Toughness Well being and Coach created Motivational Climate Within Collegiate Athletics

Download or read book Mental Toughness Well being and Coach created Motivational Climate Within Collegiate Athletics written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between college student-athletes' well-being, self-ratings of mental toughness in sport, and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate. One hundred and two NCAA Division I female student-athletes completed measures of well-being, mental toughness, and coach-created motivational climate over the course of a university academic year. The author hypothesized that mental toughness and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate would predict well-being. Overall, the results of the study found a predictive relationship between well-being and mental toughness, and well-being, mental toughness, and an ego-involving coach-created motivational climate. These results provide initial evidence that cognitive, affective, personality, and environmental factors influence student-athlete well-being. The findings also demonstrate that Henriques et al.'s (2017) Nested Model of Well-being (NM) may be an effective model to understand the unique factors that influence student-athlete well-being. For example, the results of the study indicate that the construct of mental toughness may overlap with Henriques et al.'s (2014) conceptualization of adaptive potentials (one's skills and abilities to function effectively in the environment). Additionally, the influence of a student-athlete's perception of the coach-created motivational climate on well-being may be aligned with the NM's characterization of the environmental domain. These results indicate a need to study other factors that influence student-athlete well-being. This study demonstrates a need to develop measures that assess student-athlete well-being while also accounting for the unique cultural components of college athletics that may influence the well-being of student athletes.

Book Goal Orientation and Sport Orientation of Intercollegiate Athletes

Download or read book Goal Orientation and Sport Orientation of Intercollegiate Athletes written by Anita N. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The study was designed to examine the relationship between goal orientation based on goal perspective theory (Duda & Nicholls, 1992; Nicholls, 1984a, 1984b, 1989) and sport orientation (Gill & Deeter, 1988) by assessing the relationships between goal orientations and sport orientations of intercollegiate athletes. The Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ; Duda, 1989; Duda & Nicholls, 1992) and Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ; Gill & Deeter, 1988) were administered to 859 National Collegiate Athletics Association Division III athletes in New England. The two-factor structure of the TEOSQ and the three-factor structure of the SOQ were confirmed. Good internal consistency reliability was found for each factor of both the TEOSQ and the SOQ. High Task Orientation was positively related to Competitiveness and Goal Orientation; higher Ego Orientation was positively related to Competitiveness and Win Orientation. No relationship was found between Task Orientation and Win Orientation, as well as Ego Orientation and Goal Orientation. Model fit to the data was lower than expected and a larger sample size iS recommended for the future replication of this study.
