Book excerpt: In certain sports, the ability of an athlete to change direction while sprinting is considered a vital skill required to be successful. Soccer is one of those sports and because of that learning to properly execute change of direction movements become very important. Statistics show a growing increase in youth female participation in soccer and as a result, injuries within this population has also increased. Because female athletes are at a greater risk for ACL injuries than males, coaches have acknowledged the need for proper training that will assist female athletes in executing skills safely. Current training programs for ACL injury reduction focus on strengthening of muscle, appropriate movement patterns and balance training. However, there is limited research on effective strategies or training procedures being used to teach youth female soccer athletes how to properly perform the desired movements associated with decreased risk of ACL injuries. Behavioral skills training (BST) have been shown to be an effective method for teaching acquisition of a wide variety of skills, however there is limited research on BST package as a teaching procedure in the sports setting. This study evaluated the effectiveness of BST package in teaching steps of a soccer drill to three youth female soccer athletes. The BST package consisted of verbal instructions, modeling, rehearsal and feedback which include video replay. The study used a multiple-baseline design across participants to evaluate the effects of BST. Results showed significant improvements in the number of steps the participants performed correctly relative to baseline and skills were maintained during a three-week follow-up. The study suggested BST was effective in increasing the number of steps performed correctly within the agility drill. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Sport psychology is a field that many individuals in athletics use on a daily basis, and is beginning to become a commonly accepted valued addition to an athlete or team; training and preparation. The importance of sport psychology relating to athletic performance, as well as the prevalence within athletic training shows that sport psychology should be examined as a priority when relating to athletes. Another aspect that relates to athletics is that of anxiety. Specifically in sports, anxiety has been found to impact performance, so it is important to review what interventions can help lower anxiety levels within the athletic population. The main purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of the psychological skill training (PST) of goal setting and mental imagery on anxiety levels during different stages of the season among Division 1 female soccer athletes. Participants included the members of the Central Connecticut State University Division 1 female soccer team, ages varying from 17-22 years old (N=21). During the beginning of preseason, participants completed a self-confidence questionnaire, anxiety questionnaires, and demographic information. Athletes met with a sport psychology consultant at Central Connecticut State University, once every two weeks, for approximately 30-60 minutes over the course of the season to be trained in the psychological skills of goal setting and mental imagery. The current study demonstrated that psychological skill training of mental imagery and goal setting helped lower anxiety, both state and trait anxiety, as well as cognitive and somatic levels in division 1 female soccer athletes. Future studies could examine a more rigid PST intervention with the hopes of greater changes in anxiety levels.

In females, research has shown few between-position differences in physiological characteristics. Additionally, female field players can display similar aerobic fitness to elite players as assessed by the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1. The authors suggest that collegiate female players may need further development in high-intensity running and repeated-sprint ability. Afterwards, they present research supporting the idea that that turfgrass maintenance on soccer fields in Slovenia differs significantly, and several managers lack knowledge about proper turfgrass management. However, the maintenance budget is not the most important factor in determining the appearance of the soccer fields. A subsequent review is presented with the goal of reviewing the trainability of short sprinting in youth soccer players. The authors examined studies from 2005 to the present which focused on improving sprint or agility performances, and included a description of the training protocol, pre-and post-test measures (mean and standard deviation) for the training group and the control group. The findings demonstrate progress in short straight-line sprinting and in agility performance with different training regimes. Another study is presented analysing the evolution of the physical condition in young elite soccer players during the full competitive period throughout eight seasons. In this study, one hundred and eleven young soccer players belonging to the reserve team of a Spanish professional soccer academy were examined. The last study describes the perceived exertion of soccer players in the pre-season and in-season periods and to analyses the differences in the perceived effort between friendly and official matches in relation to the minutes played in young soccer players.
