Book Examining the Career Decision making Choices of Upper Division Business Students

Download or read book Examining the Career Decision making Choices of Upper Division Business Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the factors that impact upper division business students career decision-making choices. A quantitative method was used in this descriptive design. Three hundred and forty-two students participated by completing an online survey. Data from an online survey were used to assess students’ career decision-making choices based on the three self-authorship phases: external formulas, crossroads, and self-authorship (authoring one’s own life). The findings suggest that external formula outcomes with regard to gender indicated that both women and juniors had higher external formula scores than men and seniors, respectively. With reference to crossroads, there were no significant differences in scores between gender, academic standing, and transfer status. Self-authorship results with regard to gender indicated that women had higher self-authorship scores than men. Interaction was significant between gender and transfer, indicating that for each of them simultaneously (i.e., men, women, nontransfer, and transfer) crossroads had higher scores than external formulas and self-authorship. The research findings are useful to college and university career services and academic advisers to have a better understanding of when upper division students are autonomously making career choice decisions and how those choices can impact their majors. The appropriate career service interventions should be implemented to support their career planning and development in the future.

Book Career Decision making Self efficacy

Download or read book Career Decision making Self efficacy written by Melissa W. Sisco and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior research on the relationship between self-efficacy and career decision making is inconclusive because of the lack of theoretical background and causal conclusions. More research is needed to investigate how the educational background, career choice, and work experience, of entrepreneurs, influences their career decision-making self-efficacy beliefs and how those beliefs effect their decision to become entrepreneurs. The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent career choice, education, and work experience related to the level of career decision-making self-efficacy among participants in the Ventureprise business incubation program who are or are intending to become entrepreneurs. The education and longevity of work experience were examined. The objectives of this study were to investigate to what extent the level of career decision-making self-efficacy was affected by career choice in entrepreneurship, education level completed, and longevity of work experience. The results of the study indicated that, although there were observed increases in levels of career decision-making self-efficacy among those who chose entrepreneurship as a career, the results were not statistically significant. Similarly, increases in career decision-making self-efficacy were observed among participants with higher formal education levels. Finally, no correlation existed between years of work experience and career decision-making self-efficacy beliefs among participants. Findings were inconsistent with prior research, and recommendations for further research are made based on limitations of the current study.

Book excerpt: Selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine, January 2010 From the depressed and lonely college student to the business executive at midlife experiencing decreasing levels of career satisfaction to the couple where one partner has been unfaithful in the relationship, counselling is the intervention that numerous individuals turn to each year as the challenges and stress of daily living exceed their normal coping abilities. Book Understanding the Educational and Career Pathways of Engineers

Download or read book Understanding the Educational and Career Pathways of Engineers written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-26 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering skills and knowledge are foundational to technological innovation and development that drive long-term economic growth and help solve societal challenges. Therefore, to ensure national competitiveness and quality of life it is important to understand and to continuously adapt and improve the educational and career pathways of engineers in the United States. To gather this understanding it is necessary to study the people with the engineering skills and knowledge as well as the evolving system of institutions, policies, markets, people, and other resources that together prepare, deploy, and replenish the nation's engineering workforce. This report explores the characteristics and career choices of engineering graduates, particularly those with a BS or MS degree, who constitute the vast majority of degreed engineers, as well as the characteristics of those with non-engineering degrees who are employed as engineers in the United States. It provides insight into their educational and career pathways and related decision making, the forces that influence their decisions, and the implications for major elements of engineering education-to-workforce pathways.

Book Identifying and Recruiting Language Teachers

Download or read book Identifying and Recruiting Language Teachers written by Peter B. Swanson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume begins by locating critical inquiry within the epistemological and methodological history of second language study. Subsequent chapters portray researcher-participant exploration of identity and agency while challenging inequitable policies and practices. Research on internationalization, Englishization, and/or transborder migration address language policies and knowledge production at universities in Hong Kong, Standard English and Singlish controversies in Singapore, media portrayals of the English as an Official Language movement in South Korea, transnational advocacy in Japan, and Nicaraguan/Costa Rican South to South migration. Transnational locations of identity and agency are fore-fronted in narrative descriptions of Korean heritage language learners, a discursive journey from East Timor to Hawaii, and a reclaimed life history by a Chinese peasant woman. Labor union and GLBT legal work illustrate discourses that can hinder or facilitate agency and change. Hawaiian educators advocate for indigenous self-determination through revealing the political and social meanings of research. California educators describe struggles at the front-lines of resistance to policies and practices harmful to marginalized children. A Participatory Action Research (PAR) project portrays how Latina youth in the U.S. “resist wounding inscriptions” of the intersecting emotional and physical violence of homes, communities, and antiimmigrant policies and attitudes. Promoting agency through drawing on diversity resources is modeled in a bilingual undergraduate PAR project. The volume as a whole provides a model for critical research that explores the multifaceted and evolving nature of language identities while placing those traditionally known as participants at the center of agency and advocacy.

Book excerpt: The present research examines the effects of multiple developmental relationships on early career choice and change. This study develops a theoretical framework for understanding how social influence factors affect the decision to change careers. Hypotheses are tested with survey and archival data on a sample of Master's of Business Administration (MBA) students who are making decisions for their careers following graduate school. Results show that beyond individual-level factors such as education and work history, individuals' decisions are strongly related to the advice they receive from others. Specifically, the decision to change careers is related to the composition, quality, and content of help the decision-maker receives from a set or "portfolio" of career advisors. By examining the social context of career decision-making, the present research moves beyond dispositional approaches to a more "relational" approach to careers and organizational research.
