Download or read book Examining the Barriers Women Face in Achieving Senior level Leadership Roles at Council for Christian Colleges and Universities written by Andrew Paul Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data outlines the significant underrepresentation of women in senior-level leadership positions compared to males, specifically within the Council for Christian Colleges and University (CCCU) institutional environment. Due to the scarce amount of research of women who currently reside in senior-level leadership positions at Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, this qualitative research study examined the barriers women faced and strategies they employed to overcome the barriers to achieving senior-level leadership roles within CCCU member institutions. The study was guided by one central, overarching research question: How do senior-level women leaders navigate leadership advancement within CCCU institutions? The study utilized the theoretical frameworks of the sex-role stereotype theory and role congruity model to provide foundational theoretical knowledge with the study phenomenon explored in further detail through three additional research questions. A sample of 15 current senior-level women leaders from multiple CCCU institutions spanning across the United States was interviewed through a semistructured approach to explore their lived leadership experiences and perspectives. As a result of the research, 11 common themes were established: (a) Christian upbringing, (b) leadership development, (c) leadership opportunities, (d) woman catalysts, (e) stereotypes, (f) traditional institutional barriers, (g) hierarchal disconnect, (h) women’s representation, (i) a lack of support or mentorship, (j) employee first/ relational leadership, and (k) critical leadership characteristics. Keywords: Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), evangelical traditions, family-work conflict (double-bind), women’s underrepresentation, gender inequality, historical gender roles, organizational leadership, self-efficacy

Book Black Female Leadership

Download or read book Black Female Leadership written by Angelene Bonner and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the lived experiences of Black women as they navigate(d) their corporate careers with aspirations of reaching senior leadership positions within their companies. Through this research, we sought to understand and characterize the barriers that exist to ascension, and what the consequences are for individual Black women. According to Becker (1970), we must understand how an individual perceives the situation as well as the obstacles she believes she faces. Through the study, we learned how some women achieved success, others' successes were derailed, and still others diverted to alternative paths, or are still striving. Such an internal or emic approach brought greater depth to the research with its detailed accounts of Black women leader experiences. The study aimed to explore evidence-based support for the challenges and impact of barriers to senior leadership ascension for Black women, and how Black women experienced the phenomenon at the intersection of their race and gender (intersectionality). The implications from this study encourage organizations to decrease barriers in a coordinated manner to help Black women leaders achieve their highest levels of success.

Book Attaining and Retaining Senior Leadership Positions

Download or read book Attaining and Retaining Senior Leadership Positions written by Felecia Cunningham and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numbers of African American women presidents, provosts, and vice presidents of colleges and universities have increased over the past few decades. However, even with the slight increases, there are still significant disparities in regards to African American women in positions of leadership (American Council on Education, 2018). The intersection of race and gender may potentially cause African American women to experience discrimination and bias based upon either race or gender or both (Davis, 2016). This qualitative study examined the perceptions of African American women presidents, provosts, and vice-presidents of four-year, private Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as to how they believe they were able to attain and remain in positions of leadership at their current and/or former institutions. The study more specifically examined the roles that race and gender play in the attainment and retention of senior leadership positions. By exploring the experiences of African American women senior administrators, four-year, private HBCUs can create environments that are more inclusive to African-American women and identify the best leaders, regardless of race or gender, to guide the institutions into the future. This study revealed that the participants attributed their senior leadership position attainment to work ethic, integrity, discipline, education and work experience. The participants also discussed some of the barriers to retention in senior leadership positions including work-life balance, not understanding the politics of an institution, not getting along with the board or stakeholders, not producing positive results, and sexism or gender biases. In relation to racial and gender bias and discrimination, most of the participants stated that at some point in their career they have experienced some type of bias or discrimination whether it was racial or gender related. For the most part, the racial discrimination was experienced at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) or corporate organizations. Some of the participants, however, stated that they have not experienced racial bias or discrimination at HBCUS. Many of the participants noted that although they had not experienced racial discrimination at HBCUs, they had experienced gender discrimination and biases at HBCUs.

Book The Underrepresentation of Women in Senior Leadership Positions

Download or read book The Underrepresentation of Women in Senior Leadership Positions written by Marchelle Chemar Lee and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have remained stagnant within lower level to middle management roles, very rarely exceeding to senior level positions. The gender preference for senior level management, such as chief executive officers, vice presidents, senior vice presidents, and directors, has been that of men, with perceptions, biases, and stereotypes hindering advancement. The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons behind the underrepresentation of women as senior level leaders in the financial industry, as well as create or increase awareness for those within financial institutions that are responsible for the hiring and promotion of talent into these senior level positions. This study was conducted using a qualitative case study and a flexible research design. A total of 18 participants were interviewed, with each interview being one-on-one, semi-structured, consisting of 12 questions, and recorded utilizing a 32GB Voice Activated Recorder. These recordings were then transcribed and analyzed by NVivo Pro 12. The themes discovered were perception and its impact on leadership abilities, obstacles and methods to overcome them, the importance of networking and mentorship, and preventing gender inequality in the workplace. The findings revealed that gender impacts how one is perceived as a leader, with negative stereotypes and biases contributing to the barriers that women trying to ascend into senior leadership face. It was also revealed that women do not have access to the same networking and mentoring that men do and that organizations are contributing to workplace gender inequality when they fail to encourage growth opportunities for women. Firms can utilized these findings to create better inclusion standards in their policies, as well as hiring and promoting practices.

Book Lasting Female Educational Leadership

Download or read book Lasting Female Educational Leadership written by Laura Hills and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our colleges and universities are being led in large part by baby boomers who are now in later midlife. Huge numbers of those middle-aged leaders will retire within the next 10 years. While we know that being in later midlife and impending retirement must influence a person in a leadership position at an institution of higher learning, we don’t really understand how. This book is based upon an empirical study that linked higher education leadership to one aspect of midlife known as generativity. This psychosocial phenomenon was described by Erik Erikson as a desire that peaks in midlife to leave something for future generations before one dies. Generativity typically manifests itself in the legacy one intends to leave. The author of this book has completed a multiple case study of women who are in later midlife and who hold high-level leadership positions at an institution of higher learning. In this work, she shares more than has ever been known about the nature, antecedents, and support of generativity in the leadership of female higher education leaders in midlife.

Book Keeping Women Silent

Download or read book Keeping Women Silent written by Lisa K. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In a vast majority of professional venues including government, business and higher education, men and women are not equally present in the upper echelon administration. Historically, higher education institutions that are associated with the Churches of Christ have, at the president's cabinet level, had very minimal female representation. Faith-based institutions and those connected to the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities have experienced similar inequities though seemingly not as restrictive as that of Churches of Christ institutions. Very little research has been done specifically regarding this misrepresentation in upper administration in Churches of Christ colleges and universities, This study indicates the perspective of 26 administrators and seeks to ascertain the issues and concerns pertaining to female representation in faith-based higher education administration. Through a qualitative study based on grounded theory, interviews were conducted with 19 female administrators, 1 female president, and 6 male presidents at a variety of faith-based colleges and universities nationwide. Though a plethora of potential points were made regarding the disproportion of females in faith-based higher education administration. the disparity of female mentors was identified as one of the primary reasons women do not attain to many of the executive levels posts in these institutions. Findings indicate that additional research pertaining specifically to Church of Christ institutions needs to be conducted regarding the lack of female representation in the president's cabinet, which is potentially connected to the churches patriarchal stance. This paper makes recommendations based on a variety of areas addressed in the study to allow more women to seek presidential cabinet positions as well as be recognized by Boards of Trustees as capable of fulfilling these posts

Book Women and Leadership in Higher Education

Download or read book Women and Leadership in Higher Education written by Karen A. Longman and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Leadership in Higher Education is the first volume in a new series of books (Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice) that will be published in upcoming years to inform leadership scholars and practitioners. This book links theory, research, and practice of women’s leadership in various higher education contexts and offers suggestions for future leadership development strategies. This volume focuses on the field of higher education, particularly within the context of the United States—a sector that serves a majority of students at all degree levels who are women, yet lacks parity by women in senior leadership roles. The book’s fifteen chapters present both hard facts regarding the current demographic realities within higher education and fresh thinking about how progress can and must be made in order for U.S. higher education to benefit from the perspectives of women at the senior leadership table. The book’s opening section provides data and analysis in addressing “The State of Women and Leadership in Higher Education”; the second section offers descriptions of three effective models for women’s leadership development at the national and institutional levels; the third section draws from recent research to present “Women’s Experiences and Contributions in Higher Education Leadership.” The book concludes with five shorter chapters written by current and former college and university presidents who offer “Lessons from the Trenches” for the benefit of those who follow. In short, the thesis of the book is that our world is changing; higher education collectively, as well as institutions of all types, must change. Bringing more women into leadership is critical to the goal of moving our society and world forward in healthier ways.

Book African American Women in Leadership in Faith based Higher Education

Download or read book African American Women in Leadership in Faith based Higher Education written by Michael Charles Walker and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American women hold unique experiences in the pursuit of leadership roles within faith-based colleges and universities. Since leadership occurs within a cultural context, there is sound reason to explore if transformational leadership behavior could positively impact the lived experiences of African American women within faith-based colleges and universities who seek to enter into leadership roles. The survey was cross-sectional with data collected at one period and returned to the researcher. This research design utilized qualitative interview as the means of data collection. Five open-ended research questions guided the research study. Women were qualified for sampling with employment at a Christian college or university located in the eastern, midwestern, southern and western regions of the United States with active participation in or not in the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the lived experiences among African American women seeking leadership roles in faith-based higher education institutions. The study sought to discover if African American women perceive the presence of transformational leadership behavior within the organizational culture and leadership structure of faith-based higher education institutions in their pursuit of leadership positions.

Book A Grounded Theory of Women s Leadership Experiences in Higher Education Navigating from the Director Level

Download or read book A Grounded Theory of Women s Leadership Experiences in Higher Education Navigating from the Director Level written by Laura Ann Maki and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In higher education leadership, the proportion of women in senior-level positions has grown very modestly. This stagnation is present in representation in leadership as well as in wage equality. Although institutions and organizations have policies and practices aimed at improving diversity and equity, ongoing underrepresentation indicates that barriers, lack of interest, or other unidentified factors influence women's opportunities for achieving senior-level leadership positions. To help address the ongoing underrepresentation of women in senior-level leadership in higher education, I have focused this dissertation on women's experiences in mid-level leadership positions. In this study, I use grounded theory to examine women's leadership experiences in higher education. Findings indicate that women's experiences of developing a career identity and navigating the institutional climate include setting boundaries, prioritizing values, and experiencing blocked opportunities. Those invested in recruiting women into senior-level leadership should consider the environment, and future research should focus on diverse individuals' experiences both within and outside of the higher education context.

Book THE GLASS CEILING AN ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITIES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN THE DEEP SOUTH

Download or read book THE GLASS CEILING AN ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN ADMINISTRATIVE CAPACITIES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN THE DEEP SOUTH written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores the barriers that have hindered women?s ability to acquire top administrative positions in higher education in the Deep South. Previous studies document the fact that while more women are attending college nationally, far fewer women attain upper level administrative positions at their universities than do men. Sexism and family/work conflicts are known hindrances in women?s ability to assume key leadership roles in higher education. This research examines women?s perceptions of such obstacles in achieving top administrative positions at public universities in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. Women administrators and women who are full and associate professors at both traditionally white and historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) were surveyed on their attitudes and perceptions of barriers affecting the representation of women in administrative and upper administrative positions. This research indicates that women largely believe that men are the key decision makers at their universities. However, contrary to my hypotheses, for those women faculty and administrators surveyed who believe that there are no barriers for women in achieving administrative or upper administrative posts, many of them state they have no intention in seeking higher positions. My research findings also reveal that finances is the primary motivator for many women faculty and administrators in moving up the administrative ladder. Women faculty and administrators with financially dependent families and those who simply desire to make more money state that they would seek administrative and upper administrative positions. Further, those women faculty members and administrators who perceive their institution as having family-friendly policies and practices indicated that they are not inspired to achieve an administrative or upper administrative position based on that factor.

Download or read book When Women Lead written by Carolyn Moore and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what men and women both think about women, gender differences, and cultural norms is remarkably under-processed. Without the benefit of intentional conversation about the barriers women face, most women are left to enter the world of leadership with inadequate awareness and resources. The acknowledgement of a woman's right to leadership is only the first step. We have not yet addressed the very common barriers women face when they enter the leadership arena, nor have we explored practical solutions to help them navigate those barriers so they can lead effectively. Women need to know that unrealistic optimism is a recipe for failure. Simply by acknowledging constraints to success, then exploring strategies to enhance leadership skills, we can help women take greater authority over their call to live out of a God-given identity and giftedness. When Women Lead is for men and women who advocate for female leadership within the Church. When women are educated about the challenges they face and are given resources to navigate beyond those challenges, their opportunity for success in ministry increases dramatically. The purpose of this book is to describe those challenges, explore practical solutions, and equip women to lead successfully and hopefully. While it is an excellent resource for women ready to enter leadership with more confidence and authority, it's also perfect for denominational leaders charged with raising up women called to leadership roles, for lay leaders who want to better understand the dynamics at work when the pastor is a woman, and for husbands, parents, and friends who desperately want to support women in their life who are living out what God has given them to do. What if the Kingdom of God is straining toward the day when all God's people are deployed in the work of the Great Commission? Women are already leading powerful movements around the world. The evangelistic explosion being documented in many closed countries is largely due to the leadership of women. Missionaries tell of the critical role of women in introducing the gospel to new groups. This book can help to equip a new generation of women to rise up with tools in hand to welcome and advance God's Kingdom on earth.

Book excerpt: Although much has been written about leaders and leadership, we unfortunately know little about the women who fill this particular role. This book—the first in a series that explores women leaders in different contexts—remedies this gap by presenting the reflections of nine women community college, college, and university presidents on what they see as key tenets of leadership, illuminated by pivotal events in their careers. These presidents know the power of words, and in telling their stories through these interviews with the authors, they let us know who they are, what their visions are, and what they value. While they express some differences in their emphases on particular leadership characteristics, they show remarkable unanimity in their beliefs as to which are the most important—competence, credibility, and communication. The participants discuss the growing opportunities for women in higher education administration, without minimizing the barriers that still exist, nor the potential for backlash against powerful and assertive women. They stress the need for women to be very careful about making the correct choices for themselves; to balance personal life and work; and to appropriately prepare for leadership. This book both breaks new ground, and offers guidance for women who aspire to positions of leadership—in any field of endeavor. The Presidents: Gretchen M.
