Book excerpt: "AVID" ("Advancement Via Individual Determination") is a college-readiness program whose primary goal is to prepare middle and high school students for enrollment in four-year colleges through increased access to and support in advanced courses. The program, which focuses on underserved, middle-achieving students (defined as students earning B, C, and even D grades), places students in college preparatory classes (e.g., honors and Advancement Placement classes) while providing academic support through a daily elective period and ongoing tutorials. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviewed 66 studies on "AVID" for adolescent learners. One of these studies meets WWC evidence standards with reservations; the remaining 65 studies do not meet either WWC evidence standards or eligibility screens. Based on one study, the WWC found no discernible effects on comprehension for adolescent learners. The conclusions presented in this report may change as new research emerges. Appendices include: (1) Study characteristics: Rorie, 2007; (2) Outcome measure for the comprehension domain; (3) Summary of study findings included in the rating for the comprehension domain; (4) "AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)" rating for the comprehension domain; and (5) Extent of evidence by domain. The research focuses on high school students both in and out of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. Students were asked a series of questions that focused on the following themes: building cultural capital, college access, and growth mindset. The nature and purpose of the research study was to look at the impact AVID had with helping close the achievement gap for students with low socioeconomic backgrounds. The high school was set in a public high SES community. The researcher analyzed where the AVID program at that particular school helped students from low SES backgrounds and where it needed to further support them. Findings found that students in the AVID program generally felt they were less likely to try again and also felt they had more college access. AVID is a college and career readiness program designed to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in their academic pursuits. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the AVID program is implemented in urban middle schools and to determine its impact on students’ academic performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research employs quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive insights. The study involves semi-structured interviews with teachers, campus administrators, district administrators, and coordinators involved with the implementation of the AVID program. Additionally, academic records and standardized test scores were analyzed to measure the outcomes for students who participated in the AVID program compared to their non-AVID peers. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the effectiveness of the AVID program specifically in urban middle schools. By examining the implementation strategies utilized by schools, this research aims to identify the factors that contribute to successful program execution. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how the AVID program influences students' college aspirations and their overall educational experiences in urban middle schools. The outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the AVID program in urban middle schools. The study will also shed light on the impact of the program on academic performance, college aspirations, and the overall educational trajectory of participating students. These findings will inform educators, administrators, and policymakers of the potential benefits and limitations of implementing the AVID program within urban middle school settings. Overall, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on the AVID program by providing empirical evidence on its implementation and outcomes in urban middle schools. Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is one of the various policies being implemented to reform K-12 public schools. AVID is a privately run, independent organization that collaborates with school districts and schools to increase academic achievement. One of the many ways the program is designed to do this is through an emphasis on teacher collaboration. In this book, I examine the AVID program and how it fosters a caring environment, looking specifically at teacher collaboration in three Southern California high schools. What limits teacher collaboration and what do these limitations suggest about the possibility of caring in today's schools? This research should illuminate the importance of caring in schools and should be useful to school boards, teachers, parents, administrators, policymakers, and representatives from the AVID program.
