Book Examination Book in American History and Civics Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Examination Book in American History and Civics Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Winne Blessing and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Examination Book in American History and Civics, Vol. 1 The following set of questions and answers in United States History and Civics has been compiled from the New York Regent's examinations given during the past fourteen years. These questions and answers were originally printed in American Education and were found exceedingly helpful to teachers. In response to a general demand they have been carefully rearranged and edited and are now presented to the public in booklet form. The dates and statements of facts given have been verified and they are believed to be practically free from error. The chronological order has been in the main followed. Some of the questions that call for a comparison of facts and events do not follow the order of time. As the questions have been taken from many different examinations, it has been found impossible to avoid a repetition of ideas, but no two questions of exactly the same import are given. All teachers of Elementary United States History will find this booklet an invaluable aid for rapid review work and for acquainting their pupils with the kind of questions and answers that are used in these and similar examinations. Download or read book Topics and Questions on American History and Civics written by George Douglas Robins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topics and Questions on American History and Civics: Amherst College, U. S, Naval Academy, College Entrance Examination Board and Other Institutions According to statistics of examining boards, history is one of the most difficult subjects in which to prepare students for examination. In some subjects a standard text may provide adequate prep aration; but the student in history is appalled by the vast scope and innumerable relations of the subject. NO one text can con tain it all. Hence the desirability of suggesting to the student by means of widely selected questions as many aspects of the subject as possible. In this way his thoughts may be directed into new channels and valuable and suggestive relations may be discovered. This small volume of questions is submitted to the public in the hope that it may serve to make the study of American His tory and Civics more stimulating and interesting as well as to deprive examinations of their peculiar terror. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of America, Vol. 1 of 2 IN fulfilling the engagement which I have come under to the public With respect to the History of America, it was my intention not to have published any part of the work until the whole was completed. The present state of the British Colonies has induced me to alter that resolution. While they are engaged in civil war with Great Britain, inquiries and speculations con. Cerning their ancient forms of policy and laws, which exist no longer, can not be interesting. The attention and expectation of mankind are now turn ed tos their future condition. In whatever manner this unhappy con. Test may terminate, a new order of things must arise in North America. And its affairs will assume another aspect. I wait, with the solicitude of a good citizen, until the ferment subsides, and re lav government he reestablish ed, and then I shall return to this art 0 my work, in which I had made some regress. That together vi the history of Portuguese America, and the settlements made by the several nations of Europe in the West India islands, will complete my plan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young American: A Civic Reader The interest of the day is not that of mere study, of sound scholarship as an end, of good books for their own sake, but of education as a power in human affairs; of educated men as an influence in the commonwealth. "Tell me," said an American scholar of Goethe, the many-sided, "what did he ever do for the cause of man?" The scholar, the poet, the philosopher, are men among other men. From these unavoidable social relations spring opportunities and duties. How do they use them? How do they discharge them? Does the scholar show in his daily walk that he has studied the wisdom of ages in vain? Does the poet sing of angelic purity and lead an unclean life? Does the philosopher peer into other worlds, and fail to help this world upon its way? Four years before our Civil War, the same scholar - it was Theodore Parker - said sadly: "If our educated men had done their duty, we should not now be in the ghastly condition we bewail." - George William Curtis. This Committee consisted of five members, as follows: Wilbur F. Gordy, Hartford, Connecticut, Chair man; Philander P. Claxton, United States Commissioner of Education; Charles E. From the first Mrs. Fannie Fern Andrews, Secretary of the American School Citizenship League, acted as Secretary-Treasurer of the Committee; and later on Mrs. John W. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of the Political and Social Growth of the American People, 1492-1865, Vol. 1 In several places the Syllabus directs the student's attention to important documents by parenthetical references to Readings. Brown's Epoch Making Papers (macmillan) is a low-priced collection which may be used, but the term Readings will permit those who wish to place more stress on documents to use a larger source book. A standard collection is the one by William macdonald, Documentary Source Book of American History, 7607 7926. Another excellent collection is that by T. C. Pease and A. S. Roberts, under the title of Selected Readings in American History. A more recent work of similar character is H. S. Commager's Documents of American History. A useful map-book at reasonable cost is Bartholomew's Literary and Historical Atlas of America (everyman's Library). A more elaborate and expensive atlas is that edited by Dixon R. Fox, containing the maps of the American Nation (harper). A full list of books cited is printed at the close of the Syllabus, and addi tional references with comments will be found in the Select Bibliographies which follow the chapters of the textbook. It is hoped that these lists will aid colleges in the selection of suitable books for collateral reading, and that this Syllabus, like its predecessors, will be of use to secondary school teachers as a guide in self-preparation. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Review of History and Politics, and General Repository of Literature and State Papers, Vol. 1 Whatever maxims Of wisdom applicable to our institutions the best writers either ancient or modern can afford on the science of government, will be industriously sought and quo ted, as well as such cases in the history of the past, as may serve to enlighten the public opinion, both with regard to our own situation and to the transactions of European powers. It will be made a principal object to furnish the readers of this miscellany with correct views of the true condition and policy Of the two great belligerents by whose distant strug gles our domestic peace is shaken, and in whose dispositions and projects our highest interests are deeply involved. Every document, therefore, calculated to throw light on this to pic, and which an extensive correspondence and the best opportunities can yield, will be minutely examined, and ren dered subservient to a purpose, on the importance of which it would be superfluous to dwell. The proceedings of congress will be vigilantly watched, and temperately discussed, - but not, however, without that degree of zeal which an ardent love of country naturally excites, and which, so far from prov ing an Obstruction, is, in fact, auxiliary to the surest operations of the judgment. Genuine sentiment and sound policy can never be dissociated, -and it is, therefore, that full scope will be given to the natural, elevated, warm feelings, and to the vehement, unsuborned, virtuous passions, of the heart, whenever the subject of discussion shall be those schemes of profligate ambition which now menace the liberties of all man kind, and those acts Of portentous corruption, - the crimes of unexampled depravity, -which assail the moral and political order Of Europe - and which awaken terror while they kindle indignation in the mind Of every reflecting and honest indivia dual of every country. Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
