Book Guidelines for Riparian Restoration in British Columbia

Download or read book Guidelines for Riparian Restoration in British Columbia written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guideline document represents a compilation of management practices for riparian restoration derived from the British Columbia Watershed Restoration Program and concurrent operational practices. The document is meant to be used by practitioners to aid in prescribing or carrying out silviculture treatments in riparian areas, with an emphasis on a risk-based approach to riparian restoration practices that achieve effective & cost-efficient results. The introduction outlines types of riparian restoration and describes riparian functional elements that are examined in a pre-treatment assessment. Section 2 reviews stream classes and the relative importance of riparian functional elements as a context for treatment based on stream type. Section 3 summarizes stand structures commonly found in previously harvested or disturbed riparian areas. A list of treatment options is provided and linked to the management practices treatments in section 4, which presents guidance on treatment implementation. These practices are organized in the following categories: conifer release, variable density spacing, regeneration, range management, and general considerations. Includes glossary.

Book Integrating Riparian Zones with Right of Way Management

Download or read book Integrating Riparian Zones with Right of Way Management written by James George Scouras and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study tests the applicability of using an Integrated Resource Management (IRM) strategy for more effectively managing riparian zones along electric transmission Rightofways (ROWs). A literature search revealed that while there is an extensive body of information about the importance of riparian zones in creating and maintain aquatic habitat, there has been no research conducted on the effects of transmission powerline vegetation management on riparian zones in British Columbia (BC). Further, an apparent management contradiction exists because electric utilities traditionally manage vegetation on ROWs by cutting all tall trees, whereas in most other situations, tall growing riparian communities are being preserved or restored. In response to this the primary research question for this study is "Is it possible for riparian zone function to be integrated with current vegetation management practices along electric transmission ROWs in BC?" To investigate the problem 12 separate sites across the BC Hydro transmission facility were studied. Variables were selected as indicators of four separate, but functionally related riparian ecosystem functions; energy flow, stream hydrology, bank stability and habitat complexity. Site data was collected, processed and then each case was described and evaluated independently before trends were compared between sites. Vegetation management practices were investigated by reviewing BC Hydro's documents and by conducting guided interviews with BC Hydro staff. Trends between ecosystem function and vegetation management activities were then compared to the literature to complete analysis. The key findings of the study are that traditional vegetation maintenance activities appear to have mixed, site sensitive impacts on the riparian ecosystem functions studied. BC Hydro is implementing a management process designed to integrate site specific issues and varied technical information into workplans. As a result, most of the conditions necessary for integrating riparian function with electric transmission ROWs maintenance are present in BC. Recommendations are provided which describe the remaining conditions necessary for a successful IRM approach to this issue. Hence, the project links IRM theory to a case study example and describes a set of parameters necessary to more effectively manage riparian zones along electric transmission corridors."--Page ii.

Book Riparian Management in Forests of the Continental Eastern United States

Download or read book Riparian Management in Forests of the Continental Eastern United States written by Ellen S. Verry and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timing could not be better for addressing riparian area management and the resulting impacts of surface water. The Forest Service leadership team has identified water and watershed management as the issue of the upcoming decade. These factors and more have moved riparian forests to the forefront of environmental management. Riparian Management in Forests of the Continental Eastern United States gives you the tools you need to take on this task. Each day, thousands of natural resource professionals face the problems involved in managing riparian forests. The challenge: fragmented ownership, fragmented ecosystems, and diverse interest groups. The solution requires a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on a complex mix of government agencies, private interests, and local communities as exemplified in the following initiatives: Chesapeake Bay Program "Save the Bay" Inland West Water Strategy New York City Watershed Project The Pacific Habitat Strategy The Anadromous Fish Habitat Riparian Management in Forests of the Continental Eastern United States summarizes the state-of-the-art in the management of forested riparian areas. It serves as a desktop reference for natural resource administrators, educators, and on-the-ground managers from industry, consulting firms, and municipal, state, and federal agencies who routinely face the complex problems of protecting riparian areas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book Conservation Biology Principles for Forested Landscapes

Download or read book Conservation Biology Principles for Forested Landscapes written by Joan Voller and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide information to those who wish to interact with the landbase in an ecologically sustainable manner. Practitioners charged with the administration of land-based programs in industry and government will find the information presented useful. It should also be a resource for many community groups involved in land-use decision-making. Humans continue to use forests and make decisions about land use without perfect information. Conservation Biology Principles for Forested Landscapes is intended to enable the improvement of planning and decison-making processes by providing ecological information on issues of forest use. Current approaches are not working. Where information exists on new, ecologically sustainable approaches, practitioners should switch. Where the information on a better approach is not yet available, practitioners should replace the current, inappropriate approach with a variety of flexible ones that offer the opportunity to change with new knowledge.

Book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce written by N. Merle Peterson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitka spruce, the largest of the world's spruces, is an important component of British Columbia's coastal forests. Its ecology gives it a special place in the sustainable management of the province's forests. However, in west coast forestry it is poorly known in comparison with its main coniferous companions -- Douglas-fir, western redcedar, and western hemlock. As an important international forestry resource, it is crucial that Sitka spruce -- its ecology and the ecosystems in which it occurs -- be clearly understood by those who are involved with its management.

Book Environmental Reconstruction in Headwater Areas

Download or read book Environmental Reconstruction in Headwater Areas written by Martin F. Bach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Environmental Reconstruction in Headwater Areas" provide a landmark in the evolution of a distinctive movement, perhaps an emerging new philosophy, within the practice of headwater management. The Headwater Control movement traces its history back to the First International Conference on Headwater Control, Prague, 1989. Throughout this brief history, Headwater Control has remained a typical environment movement 'ad hocracy'. At its meetings, for every convert to the multidisciplinary, integrative, practical, interventionist, and above-all 'green' ideals of the group, there have been several delegates who have found the whole concept both new and slightly incomprehensible. One reason for this has been the Headwater Control practice of trying to bring together scientists, practitioners, policy-makers and non-government environmentalist organisations. The group's larger meetings have always been federal gatherings. Sponsorship has been shared with invited participation from associations representing hydrological science, soil conservation, erosion control, forestry, environmental activism and so forth. These delegations may have included fellow travellers in the work to protect headwater environments, but their main concerns have not necessarily coincided with the Headwater Control group's prescriptions for the environmental regeneration of headwater regions. The Liberec Workshop, whose proceedings are distilled into this volume, provided a first opportunity for the scattered supporters of Headwater Control to talk among themselves and fmd out to what degree there really is a shared vision of the way forward in headwater management, restoration and protection.
