Ce type d'applications necessitent souvent de disposer de fonctions d'evolution de schema. Pour repondre a ce besoin, la plupart des sgbdoo offrent leurs propres fonctionnalites d'evolution de schema, avec leurs propres semantiques. Cependant, la variete des applications et la diversite des besoins font qu'il n'existe pas de systeme possedant des fonctionnalites d'evolution de schema capables de repondre aux besoins de toutes les applications. C'est en particulier le cas de l'application atlas dont les besoins ne sont pas completement satisfaits par les mecanismes des systemes actuels en raison notamment de l'absence d'operations specifiques de suppression, de fusion et d'eclatement de classes et de l'absence d'un mecanisme d'adaptation et de migration d'instances permettant de reorganiser, en fonction des evolutions executees, la repartition des instances dans les classes. Le travail realise au cours de cette these a consiste a definir une semantique plus large pour les operations d'evolution de schema en integrant si possible les semantiques rencontrees dans les systemes et en prenant en compte les besoins specifiques de l'application atlas. Les incidences sur l'evolution des donnees proprement dites sont precisees pour chacune des fonctionnalites decrites. Dans le cas de l'eclatement d'une classe, l'utilisateur peut selectionner, par une requete, les instances a faire migrer. L'evolution des instances est realisee par une fonction d'adaptation qui permet de repercuter les modifications du schema sur les donnees. Pour cela, elle assure par une conversion immediate la restructuration des instances associees a des classes modifiees, execute les requetes de migrations d'instances exprimees par l'utilisateur et realise la mise a jour des references aux instances converties

Book excerpt: Cette thèse étudie la définition, les propriétés et les utilisations de la migration d'objet dans les bases de données à objets. Cette étude a été orientée suivant trois axes principaux. Le premier de ces axes est l'étude des problèmes posés par la primitive de migration d'Objet elle-même, que nous analysons comme étant principalement des problèmes de références mal typées. Nous nous sommes interroges sur la manière dont doivent être réglés ces problèmes et sur l'intégration de cette nouvelle primitive au sein de langages de mise à jour d'instance. A partir de cette étude, nous avons proposé un langage de mise à jour d'instance offrant une primitive de migration d'objet. Le second axe porte sur la manière dont la migration d'objet apporte une solution au problème de l'évolution de schéma. Nous montrons qu'il est nécessaire de réorganiser l'instance, et que dans ce contexte la migration d'objet est une primitive puissante. Le dernier axe porte sur une intégration du concept de migration d'objet au sein du schéma d'une base de données, définissant ainsi un schéma dynamique. Nous définissons un mécanisme de contraintes dynamiques permettant principalement de spécifier les séquences de migrations autorisées au sein de la base de données. Nous montrons également comment il interagit avec des langages de mise à jour d'instance en restreignant l'ensemble des programmes applicables sur la base. Une implémentation de deux langages de mise à jour d'instance comportant de la migration d'objet a été réalisée. Malgré l'apparent déclin actuel des SGBD à objets, nous croyons que les problèmes de dynamicité étudiés dans cette thèse vont au-delà d'un modèle, d'un langage, et même d'un paradigme de programmation particulier. En particulier, nous croyons qu'ils se poseront sans aucun doute, sous une forme ou une autre, dans XML et les modèles semi-structurés.

Rashid focuses on the use of Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) techniques to modularise otherwise broadly scoped features in database systems like the transaction or the versioning model to improve their customisability, extensibility, and maintainability. His aim is to show how the use of AOP can transform the way we develop, use and maintain database systems. He also discusses how database systems can support AOP by providing means for storage and retrieval of aspects. Aspect-Oriented Databases Systems shows the possible synergy between AOSD and database systems and is of particular interest for researchers, graduate students and software developers in database systems and applications.

Nous considérons d'abord les solutions proposées pour la gestion de l'évolution de schéma de bases de données à objets. Nous proposons une classification des approches existantes. Pour chacune de ces approches nous décrivons son principe, les mécanismes d'évolution associés, ainsi que les produits et les prototypes qui l'implantent. Nous analysons ces travaux en soulignant les avantages et les inconvénients de chaque approche. Nous présentons ensuite notre approche. D'une part, cette approche propose un cadre qui permet de combiner les fonctionnalités de la modification et du versionnement pour une meilleure gestion de l'évolution de schéma. D'autre part, elle offre à l'utilisateur un langage permettant de décrire les liens entre les différents états de la base de données afin de traduire le plus fidèlement possible les évolutions du monde réel. Le versionnement de schéma évite la perte d'informations et assure que les anciens programmes d'applications continuent de fonctionner. Cependant, le nombre de versions peut devenir important ; ce qui rend complexe leur gestion. Notre approche permet de limiter le nombre de versions: (1) l'évolution d'un schéma est traduite par sa modification si l'évolution est non-soustractive (ne provoque pas la suppression de propriétés) ou si l'utilisateur le décide, (2) La technique utilisée pour adapter les instances au schéma après l'évolution, est basée sur la caractérisation de l'importance de l'existence en tant que telle d'une version d'objet. Ainsi, le nombre de versions est limité à celles qui sont fréquemment accédées par des programmes, (3) la possibilité donnée à l'administrateur de réorganiser la base de données lui permet de supprimer des versions historiques du schéma
