Book A Study of the Standard Model Higgs Boson Decaying to a Pair of Tau Leptons with the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book A Study of the Standard Model Higgs Boson Decaying to a Pair of Tau Leptons with the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Tyler Henry Ruggles and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a 5.5 standard deviation observation of the Higgs boson decaying to fermions using the data collected at the LHC at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy. The studied dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 inverse femtobarns. The best fit signal strength for the H to tau tau process is measured to be mu = 1.24 ^{+0.29}/{-0.27}, consistent with standard model predictions. Unique event categories are used targeting the leading Higgs boson production processes, gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production. This provides signal regions sensitive to Higgs boson couplings to both fermions and vector bosons. These two Higgs boson couplings are measured and are consistent with standard model predictions within one standard deviation. This 5.5 standard deviation observation of the H to tau tau process and the consistency of the Higgs boson couplings with the standard model provide confirmation of the Higgs boson Yukawa couplings to fermions. This is evidence that the Higgs field provides mass for the tau lepton in addition to the vector bosons.

Book Measurement of the Higgs boson Coupling to Tau leptons and Combined Measurements of Higgs boson Properties at Sqrt s

Download or read book Measurement of the Higgs boson Coupling to Tau leptons and Combined Measurements of Higgs boson Properties at Sqrt s written by Théo Megy and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The measurement of the Higgs-boson coupling to tau-leptons, based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 ifb recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector, is presented in this thesis. The analysis considers all combinations of leptonic and hadronic decays of tau-leptons, and targets the main two production modes of the Higgs boson, gluon Fusion and Vector-Boson Fusion. The inclusive cross section of the H->tautau decay channel is measured as 3.77 +1.06-0.95 (+0.60-0.59 (Stat.) +0.87-0.74 (Syst.)) pb, which corresponds to a deviation from the background-only hypothesis with an observed (expected) significance of 4.4 (4.1) standard deviations. In addition, the measurement of cross sections in the framework of Simplified Template Cross Sections is discussed. All measurement are in agreement with predictions of the Standard Model. The combined measurement of Higgs-boson properties is also presented, based on up to 79.8 ifb of data recorded at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector. An observation of the four main production modes (ggF, VBF, VH and ttH+tH) and of four of the five main decay channels (H->gammagamma, H->ZZ, H->WW and H->bb) of the Higgs boson is achieved. In particular, the deviation from the background-only hypothesis with an observed (expected) significance of 6.5 (5.3) standard deviations for the VBF production mode is the first observation of this process by a single experiment. Measurements in the scope of the kappa-framework and of Simplified Template Cross Sections are also discussed. All the performed measurements are compatible with the Standard-Model expectations

Book The Beauty and the Boost A Higgs Boson Tale

Download or read book The Beauty and the Boost A Higgs Boson Tale written by Brian Moser and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precision measurements of the Higgs boson’s properties are a powerful tool to look for deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The 139/fb of proton-proton collision data which have been collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC, offer an opportunity to investigate rare Higgs-boson topologies, which are particularly sensitive to new physics scenarios but experimentally difficult to access. Several such measurements, which target Higgs-boson decays to heavy-flavour quarks, as well as their combinations are presented in this thesis. A novel analysis that measures Higgs-boson production in association with a heavy vector boson V (VH, with V=W,Z) at high energies is presented. Dedicated Higgs-boson reconstruction techniques are applied to reconstruct the highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs-boson decays into pairs of bottom quarks. The measurement is subsequently combined with a VH cross-section measurement at low and intermediate pT(V) to provide a differential cross-section measurement in kinematic fiducial volumes over the largest possible pT(V) range. All cross-section measurements agree with the SM predictions within relative uncertainties that range from 30% to 300%. The results are furthermore interpreted as limits on the parameters of a SM effective field theory. Finally, a combination of measurements of Higgs decays to heavy-flavour quarks is used to experimentally determine that the Higgs-boson coupling to charm quarks is weaker than to bottom quarks, as predicted by the SM. The target audience for the thesis are physicists and physics students, in particular those with a background in high energy physics.

Book Electroweak Physics at the LHC

Download or read book Electroweak Physics at the LHC written by Matthias U. Mozer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses the recent experimental results obtained at the LHC that involve electroweak bosons. The results are placed into an appropriate theoretical and historical context. The work pays special attention to the rising subject of hadronically decaying bosons with high boosts, documenting the state-of-the-art identification techniques and highlighting typical results. The text is not limited to electroweak physics in the strict sense, but also discusses the use of electroweak vector-bosons as tool in the study of other subjects in particle physics, such as determinations of the proton structure or the search for new exotic particles. The book is particularly well suited for graduate students, starting their thesis work on topics that involve electroweak bosons, as the book provides a comprehensive description of phenomena observable at current accelerators as well as a summary of the most relevant experimental techniques.

Book Evidence for the Standard Model Higgs Boson Decaying to One Semi hadronically Decaying Tau and One Leptonically Decaying Tau at ATLAS

Download or read book Evidence for the Standard Model Higgs Boson Decaying to One Semi hadronically Decaying Tau and One Leptonically Decaying Tau at ATLAS written by Michel Trottier-McDonald and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports the search for the Higgs boson decaying to a pair of tau leptons, where one tau decays leptonically and the other decays semi-hadronically. The search was conducted by the ATLAS experiment on the proton-proton collisions supplied by the LHC in 2012. It is complicated by background from a mix of known processes from the Standard Model of Particle Physics. It makes use of boosted decision trees to separate the Higgs signal from the background. The gluon-gluon fusion and the vector boson fusion production mechanisms are searched for separately. The statistical significance of the excess observed over the background-only hypothesis is 3.3 standard deviations, and reaches 4.1 standard deviations when combined with other ditau channels. The observed signal appears fully compatible with the Higgs boson of the Standard Model.

Book Search for Lepton flavour violating H 2 mu tau Decays of the Higgs Boson with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Search for Lepton flavour violating H 2 mu tau Decays of the Higgs Boson with the ATLAS Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A direct search for lepton-flavour-violating H → [mu][tau] decays of the recently discovered Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis is performed in the H → [mu][tau] had channel, where [tau] had is a hadronically decaying [tau] -lepton. The search is based on the data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 8 TeV. No statistically significant excess of data over the predicted background is observed. As a result, the observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limit on the branching fraction, Br( H → [mu][tau] ), is 1.85% (1.24%).

Book Search for the Production of the Higgs Boson Associated with a Pair of Top Quarks with the Atlas Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Search for the Production of the Higgs Boson Associated with a Pair of Top Quarks with the Atlas Detector at the LHC written by Chao Wang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of the Higgs boson associated with a pair of top quarks is one of the most important Higgs boson production modes yet still not observed. Therefore, its discovery is one of the most challenging searches after the Higgs discovery: not only will it be the first time we can observe this Higgs production mode but also we will be able to measure its Yukawa coupling to the top quark. The measured results can answer the basic question of the Standard Model (SM) and can also search for any hints of new physics beyond the SM prediction. An analysis searching for the production of the Higgs boson associated with a pair of top quarks in three leptons final states is presented in this thesis. It is performed with the data collected by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016 during the so-called « Run 2 » campaign corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV. It uses a boosted decision tree algorithm to discriminate between signal and background. The dominant background of fake leptons is estimated with the data-driven matrix method (Matrix Method). For a 125 GeV Standard Model Higgs boson, an excess of events over the expected background from other SM processes is found with an observed significance of 2.2 standard deviations, compared to an expectation of 1.5 standard deviations. The best fit for the ̄ttH production cross section is 1.5+0⋅8−0⋅7 times the SM expectation, consistent with the SM value of the Yukawa coupling to top quarks.

Book Searches for Associated Higgs Boson Production with Top Quark Pair and Higgs Pair Production in Multi Lepton Final States with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Searches for Associated Higgs Boson Production with Top Quark Pair and Higgs Pair Production in Multi Lepton Final States with the ATLAS Detector written by Merve Nazlim Agaras and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the Higgs boson at a mass around 125 GeV by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations in July 2012, it became crucial to measure its properties, such as its couplings to other particles, and search for any deviations from the Standard Model (SM) predictions. The top quark Yukawa coupling is close to unity and the strongest in the fermionic sector. Therefore, this coupling plays a crucial role in the theory. Determination of the associated production of The Higgs boson production with a pair of top quarks (ttH) offers a tree-level access to measuring this coupling. The analysis of ttH production at ATLAS experiment exploits several Higgs decay channel, together with different top quark decay modes. In this thesis, the study of the ttH (H → Multi lepton) process is presented in the topology where the Higgs decays to WW,ZZ or tautau, using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.8fb^-1 at √s = 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector between 2015-2017. Improved knowledge on the background modelling and the complex fit model is used with many degrees of freedoms. Particularly different fit setups are presented in order to understand the modelling of the major irreducible background, ttW. Furthermore, a search for the SM Higgs boson pair production in the multi lepton final states is presented. The search uses 139fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV provided by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2018. The first studies in two lepton same-sign channel is performed for lepton working point optimisation and estimation of background contributions. Template fit method is applied to estimated the reducible backgrounds and preliminary expected upper limit is calculated.

Book Physics with Photons Using the ATLAS Run 2 Data

Download or read book Physics with Photons Using the ATLAS Run 2 Data written by Stefano Manzoni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this book is based on the proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The research program of the ATLAS experiment includes the precise measurement of the parameters of the Standard Model, and the search for signals of physics beyond the SM. Both these approaches are pursued in this thesis, which presents two different analyses: the measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the di-photon decay channel, and the search for production of supersymmetric particles (gluinos, squarks or winos) in a final state containing two photons and missing transverse momentum. Finally, ATLAS detector performance studies, which are key ingredients for the two analyses outlined before, are also carried out and described.
