Book Evidence for the Heavy Baryon Resonance State Lambda b ast0 Observed with the CDF II Detector and Studies of New Particle Tracking Technologies Using the LANSCE Proton Beam

Download or read book Evidence for the Heavy Baryon Resonance State Lambda b ast0 Observed with the CDF II Detector and Studies of New Particle Tracking Technologies Using the LANSCE Proton Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To discover and probe the properties of new particles, we need to collide highly energetic particles. The Tevatron at Fermilab has collided protons and anti-protons at very high energies. These collisions produce short lived and stable particles, some known and some previously unknown. The CDF detector is used to study the products of such collisions and discover new elementary particles. To study the interaction between high energy charged particles and the detector materials often requires development of new instruments. Thus this dissertation involves a measurement at a contemporary experiment and development of technologies for related future experiments that will build on the contemporary one.

Book Measurement of B Baryons with the CDF II Detector

Download or read book Measurement of B Baryons with the CDF II Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the observation of new bottom baryon states. The most recent result is the observation of the baryon [Xi]{sub b}− through the decay [Xi]{sub b}− → J/[psi][Xi]−. The significance of the signal corresponds to 7.7[sigma] and the [Xi]{sub b}− mass is measured to be 5792.9±2.5(stat.)±1.7(syst.) MeV/c2. In addition we observe four resonances in the [Lambda]{sub b}°[pi]{sup {+-}} spectra, consistent with the bottom baryons [Sigma]{sub b}{sup (*){+-}}. All observations are in agreement with theoretical expectations.

Book excerpt: We present the latest results on the search for bottom baryon states [Sigma]{sub b} using ≈ 1 fb−1 of CDF data. The study is performed with the world's largest sample of fully reconstructed [Lambda]{sub b}° decays collected by CDF II detector at √s = 1.96TeV in the hadronic trigger path. We observe 4 new states consistent with [Sigma]{sub b}{sup (*){+-}} bottom baryons.

Book Search for the Lambda sub B Baryon at CDF

Download or read book Search for the Lambda sub B Baryon at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The [Lambda]{sub b} baryon has been observed recently by UA1 through its decay [Lambda]{sub b} → J/[psi][Lambda]°. Although CDF finds twice as many J/[psi] and observes [Lambda]° decays, no evidence for an [Lambda]{sub b} signal is seen. The UA1 data supports a lower than expected production P{sub T} for the [Lambda]{sub b}, and therefore, a lower pion P{sub T}, below the observation threshold of CDF. This result suggests that UA1 and CDF are probably not inconsistent, but also that the production models are not quite right.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of four new bottom baryons in proton-antiproton collisions with a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using 1.1 fb−1 of data collected by the CDF II detector, we observe four?°{sub b}?± resonances in the fully reconstructed decay mode?°{sub b} →?{sub c}?−, where?+{sub c} → pK−?+. The probability for the background to produce a similar or larger signal is less than 8.3 x 10−8, corresponding to a significance of greater than 5.2?. We interpret these baryons as the?{sub b}{sup (*){+-}} baryons.

Book Measurement of the Lambda 0b Lifetime in Lambda 0b 2 Lambda c pi Decays at the Collider Detector at Fermilab

Download or read book Measurement of the Lambda 0b Lifetime in Lambda 0b 2 Lambda c pi Decays at the Collider Detector at Fermilab written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lifetime of the [Lambda]0b baryon (consisting of u, d and b quarks) is the theoretically most interesting of all b-hadron lifetimes. The lifetime of [Lambda]0b probes our understanding of how baryons with one heavy quark are put together and how they decay. Experimentally however, measurements of the [Lambda]0b lifetime have either lacked precision or have been inconsistent with one another. This thesis describes the measurement of [Lambda]0b lifetime in proton-antiproton collisions with center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV at Fermilab's Tevatron collider. Using 1070 ± 60pb-1 of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), a clean sample of about 3,000 fully-reconstructed [Lambda]0b →[Lambda]c+[pi]- decays (with [Lambda]+c subsequently decaying via [Lambda]+c → p+ K- [pi]+) is used to extract the lifetime of the [Lambda]0b baryon, which is found to be c[tau]([Lambda]0b) = 422.8 ± 13.8(stat) ± 8.8(syst)[mu]m. This is the most precise measurement of its kind, and is even better than the current world average. It also settles the recent controversy regarding the apparent inconsistency between CDF's other measurement and the rest of the world.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report measurements of the resonance properties of [Lambda]c(2595)+ and [Lambda]c(2595)+ baryons in their decays to [Lambda]c+[pi]+[pi]- as well as [Sigma]c(2455)++,0 and [Sigma]c(2455)++,0 baryons in their decays to [Lambda]c+[pi]± final states. These measurements are performed using data corresponding to 5.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Exploiting the largest available charmed baryon sample, we measure masses and decay widths with uncertainties comparable to the world averages for [Sigma]c states, and significantly smaller uncertainties than the world averages for excited [Lambda]c+ states.

Book Measurements of cal B overline B 0 to Lambda c overline p and cal B B to Lambda c overline p pi and Studies of Lambda c pi Resonances

Download or read book Measurements of cal B overline B 0 to Lambda c overline p and cal B B to Lambda c overline p pi and Studies of Lambda c pi Resonances written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present an investigation of the decays {bar B}° →?{sub c}{bar p} and B− →?{sub c}+{bar p}?− based on 383 x 106?(4S) → B{bar B} decays recorded with the BABAR detector. They measure the branching fractions of these decays; their ratio is?(B− →?{sub c}+{bar p}?−)/?({bar B}° →?{sub c}+{bar p}) = 15.4 ± 1.8 ± 0.3. The B− →?{sub c}+{bar p}?− process exhibits an enhancement at the?{sub c}+{bar p} threshold and is a laboratory for searches for excited charm baryon states. They observe the resonant decays B− →?{sub c}(2455)°{bar p} and B−?{sub c}(2800)°{bar p} but see no evidence for B− →?{sub c}(2520)°{bar p}. This is the first observation of the decay B− →?{sub c}(2800)°{bar p}; however, the mass of the observed excited?{sub c}° state is (2846 ± 8 ± 10) MeV/c2, which is somewhat inconsistent with previous measurements. Finally, they examine the angular distribution of the B− →?{sub c}(2455)°{bar p} decays and measure the spin of the?{sub c}(2455)° baryon to be 1/2, as predicted by the quark model.

Book A Precision Measurement of the Lambda c Baryon Mass

Download or read book A Precision Measurement of the Lambda c Baryon Mass written by J. C. Chen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} baryon mass is measured using {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} {yields} {Lambda}K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sup +} and {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} {yields} {Sigma}{sup 0}K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sup +} decays reconstructed in 232 fb{sup -1} of data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring. The {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} mass is measured to be 2286.46 {+-} 0.14 MeV/c{sup 2}. The dominant systematic uncertainties arise from the amount of material in the tracking volume and from the magnetic field strength.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential introduction to particle physics, with coverage ranging from the basics through to the very latest developments, in an accessible and carefully structured text. Particle Physics: Third Edition is a revision of a highly regarded introduction to particle physics. In its two previous editions this book has proved to be an accessible and balanced introduction to modern particle physics, suitable for those students needed a more comprehensive introduction to the subject than provided by the ‘compendium’ style physics books. In the Third Edition the standard model of particle physics is carefully developed whilst unnecessary mathematical formalism is avoided where possible. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of experimental data in terms of the basic properties of quarks and leptons. One of the major developments of the past decade has been the establishing of the existence of neutrino oscillations. This will have a profound effect on the plans of experimentalists. This latest edition brings the text fully up-to-date, and includes new sections on neutrino physics, as well as expanded coverage of detectors, such as the LHC detector. End of chapter problems with a full set of hints for their solutions provided at the end of the book. An accessible and carefully structured introduction to this demanding subject. Includes more advanced material in optional ‘starred’ sections. Coverage of the foundations of the subject, as well as the very latest developments.
