Book Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens

Download or read book Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens written by A. Bairati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge in the field of the biology of the extracellular matrix, and in particular of collagen, has made considerable progress over the last ten years, especially in mammals, birds and ln man with respect to very important applied medical aspects. Basic knowledge in the animal kingdom overall has increased more slowly and haphazardly. We, therefore, considered it useful to organize a meeting specifically devoted to the study of the invertebrate and lower vertebrate collagens. The NATO Scientific Division financed an Advanced Research Workshop aimed at bringing together experts qualified in collagen biology (with morphological, biochemical and genetic specialization) with researchers who are currently studying collagenous tissues of invertebrates and lower vertebrates. The Medical-Biology Committee of the CNR-Rome and the University of Milan also supplied interest and support for the organization of this Meeting. The format of the workshop consisted in: 1) main lectures on the most recent aspects of collagen biology; 2) minireviews on the current knowledge of collagenous tissues in the various invertebrate phyla and in fish; 3) contributed papers on particular aspects of research in specific fields; 4) workshops on the methodology of studying collagen. As we had intended, the Workshop gave a comprehensive overview of acquired knowledge and of the present state of research actlvlty. It permitted wide interdisciplinary discussion, enabling collabora tions to be established and new research themes to be chosen. This volume contains the text of all the contributions presented at the Meeting, including posters.

Download or read book Plant Carbohydrates II written by W. Tanner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1958, a single volume in the original series of this Encyclopedia adequately summarized the state of knowledge about plant carbohydrates. Expansion into two volumes in the New Series highlights the explosive increase in information and the heightened interest that attended this class of compounds in the interven ing years. Even now the search has just begun. Much remains to be accom plished; e.g., a full description of the plant cell wall in chemical terms. Why this growing fascination with plant carbohydrates? Clearly, much credit goes to those who pioneered the complex chemistry of polyhydroxylated compounds and to those who later sorted out the biochemical features of these molecules. But there is a second aspect, the role of carbohydrates in such biological func tions as host-parasite and pollen-pistil interactions, the mating reaction in fungi, symbiosis, and secretion to name a few. Here is ample reason for anyone concerned with the plant sciences to turn aside for a moment and consider how carbohydrates, so many years neglected in favor of the study of proteins and nucleic acids, contribute to the physiological processes of growth and devel opment in plants.

Book Biogenesis Of Plant Cell Wall Polysaccharides

Download or read book Biogenesis Of Plant Cell Wall Polysaccharides written by Frank Loewus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biogenesis of Plant Cell Wall Polysaccharides contains the proceedings of a 1972 symposium on Biogenesis of Plant Cell Wall Polysaccharides held at the 164th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, New York, New York. The symposium focuses on a broad range of interest from structural to functional aspects of cell wall polysaccharide biosynthesis in algae as well as in higher plants. Organized into 17 chapters, this book details the progress and understanding regarding the biosynthesis of cell wall components and the assembly of these components in the wall. It encompasses topics on cell wall polysaccharides, UDP-D-glucuronic acid pyrophosphorylase, and D-xylose. This reference also tackles the UDP-D-glucuronic acid, L-arabinose, D-apiose, and carbohydrate polymers. Furthermore, it explains other topics, such as on extensin, hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein, cellulose, and polygalacturonic acid.

Book The Structure Biosynthesis and Degradation of Wood

Download or read book The Structure Biosynthesis and Degradation of Wood written by F. Loewus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest trees constitute one of the major resources of the world and their utilization, either for structural purposes or for the materials which they yield, dates back to antiquity. Over the centuries, the exploitation of this resource has become progressively more sophisticated, and, in many parts of the world has led to the development of highly complex forest-based industries. The research and development work which led to these industrial uses fostered the formation of numerous technical societies and associations, which, through their meetings and publi cations, have facilitated communication and the exchange of ideas. Over the years, there have been numerous symposia devoted to wood and the many facets of its properties and utilization. However, rarely has the emphasis in such symposia been placed upon the living tree and the changes which it undergoes in relation to its ultimate utilization. Hence the Phytochemical Society of North America arranged the symposium, "The Structure, Biosynthesis, and Degradation of Wood", held at the University of British Columbia in August, 1976. the contributions to which form the basis of the present volume.

Download or read book Glycoenzymes written by Masatake Ōnishi and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2000 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In living organisms, glyco-materials (beta-glycans, their oligosaccharides, and glyco-chains) play a decisive role in such biological processes as signal transduction, cell adhesion, fertilization, transport, and immunity. For industrial production, glyco-materials are inexhaustible and renewable resources. beta-glycans, for instance, are essential for the commercial production of food stuffs and other industrial products. The present volume focuses on the glyco-enzymes, which catalyze the reactions (hydrolysis, transfer, and condensation) of glyco-materials and are thus critical for their industrial utilization.

Book Plant Growth Substances 1979

Download or read book Plant Growth Substances 1979 written by F. Skoog and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth International Conference on Plant Growth Substances was held July 22-26,1979 at the Wisconsin Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the joint sponsorship of The International Plant Growth Substances Association (IPGSA) and the Graduate School of the University. More than 500 persons, including 423 regis tered participants, attended the Conference. Financial support was generously provided by the organizations listed under Acknowledg ments. The Conference was planned and hosted by a Local Committee in response to a request from Professor Dennis Carr, Secretary of IPGSA, in 1976, that the Tenth Conference be held on this campus in 1979. To achieve comprehensive, systematic coverage of the subject and yet provide maximum opportunity for individual contributions by partici pants, reports were presented under ten topics, each with sessions of oral reports and poster demonstrations. Chairmen appointed by the Local Committee organized the material to be presented and arranged for a series of integrated, invited reports on each topic. They presided and led discussions at the sessions, and they also greatly assisted in the editing of the invited reports which are presented in full in these Pro ceedings. Unfortunately it was economically impractical to publish all reports, but the 244 submitted abstracts have been printed and dis tributed to participants.

Book Handbook of Genetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert C. King
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1974-11-01
  • ISBN : 9780306376115
  • Pages : 706 pages

Download or read book Handbook of Genetics written by Robert C. King and published by Springer. This book was released on 1974-11-01 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this and future volumes of the Handbook of Genetics is to bring together a collection of relatively short, authoritative essays or annotated compilations of data on topics of significance to geneticists. Many of the essays will deal with various aspects of the biology of certain species selected because they are favorite subjects for genetic investigation in nature or the laboratory. Often there will be an encyclopedic amount of information available on such a species, with new papers appearing daily. Most of these will be written for specialists in a jargon that is be wildering to a novice, and sometimes even to a veteran geneticist working with evolutionarily distant organisms. For such readers what is needed is a written introduction to the morphology, life cycle, reproductive be havior, and culture methods for the species in question. What are its par ticular advantages (and disadvantages) for genetic study, and what have we learned from it? Where are the classic papers, the key bibliographies, and how does one get stocks of wild type or mutant strains? The chapters devoted to different species will contain information of this sort. Only a few hundreds of the millions of species available to biologists have been subjected to detailed genetic study. However, those that have make up a very heterogeneous sample of the living world.
