Book Scorpions

Download or read book Scorpions written by Bold Kids and published by . This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many interesting Scorpions Facts that can help you understand this terrifying and amazing animal. In this book, we will explore the most important information you should know about scorpions, including their appearance, diet, and life cycle. Scorpions are predatory arachnids that belong to the order Scorpiones. They are easily identified by their pair of pincers and narrow segmented tail that curves forward over their back. Each segment ends in a stinger. The body of a scorpion consists of a prosoma and two lateral organs called chelicerae. The prosoma is the top part of the scorpion and has two pairs of eyes, while the cephalothorax is divided into two parts. The latter has three to five pairs of lateral eyes. The head is divided into two parts, called the cephalothorax and mesosoma, and is covered with a hard armor plate. The book lungs are located in the prosoma. All species of scorpions are venomous. Only 25 species produce venom that is dangerous to humans. This makes them a significant threat to young children. However, most scorpions do not harm humans and only the Arizona bark scorpion has venom strong enough to kill a small child. Luckily, scorpion venom is treated with antivenom, which is available in medical facilities within its range. To feed a scorpion, owners simply drop live prey into the tank. The scorpion will then consume the prey, or ignore it, depending on whether it is hungry or not. If you are worried that the scorpion will not eat the prey, take it out of the tank after 24 hours and try another type of prey. There are other interesting Scorpions Facts that you should know. So, now you know a little more about this frightening animal!

Book excerpt: Author's Note: This book started out with the intention of being a short, simple guide to Keeping Australian Scorpions as it was apparent nothing in print was available to help those interested in Scorpion Husbandry. It seemed to me that one of the big magnets to keeping scorpions was their amazing biology, and so it seemed imperative the keeper would want to know more about aspects of life history, diversity, species and more and so this book developed into far more than was originally planned. And I'm glad it did. The reader will derive a lot more knowledge from this text than a basic keeping guide. To be the best keeper of scorpions and really enjoy the hobby it pays to know as much as possible of the biology.

Book excerpt: “If Thoreau drank more whiskey and lived in the desert, he’d write like this.”—High Country News Welcome to the land of wildfire, hypothermia, desiccation, and rattlers. The stark and inhospitable high-elevation landscape of Nevada’s Great Basin Desert may not be an obvious (or easy) place to settle down, but for self-professed desert rat Michael Branch, it’s home. Of course, living in such an unforgiving landscape gives one many things to rant about. Fortunately for us, Branch—humorist, environmentalist, and author of Raising Wild—is a prodigious ranter. From bees hiving in the walls of his house to owls trying to eat his daughters’ cat—not to mention his eccentric neighbors—adventure, humor, and irreverence abound on Branch’s small slice of the world, which he lovingly calls Ranting Hill.
