Book excerpt: 'Remarkable... traces the whole story of domestic architecture in Britain.' AN Wilson, Sunday Telegraph An Englishmanâ??s home has always been his castle. Everymanâ??s Castle restores people to the panorama of domestic architecture. Philippa Lewis turns an affectionate eye to the characteristic British types of house â?? cottages, farmhouses, semi-detached, suburban, flats, terraces, bungalows, country houses â?? and charts their rise and fall. How were they perceived when they were built, and what happened to them subsequently? What sorts of messages did the design of a house send about the inhabitant, from stairs up to the front door (implying servants living below) in a Victorian terrace to bay windows (implying private ownership) in the twentieth century? The book is thoroughly and beguilingly illustrated with amusing and out-of-the-way material from a wide variety of sources. Using the same technique as her acclaimed Everything You Can Do in the Garden Without Actually Gardening, Philippa Lewis builds up the story using original specifications, plans and architectsâ?? writings on various types of houses, then layering in the experiences or expectations of those who lived in them, drawing on novels, diaries, letters, magazines and even sale advertisements.

Book The Castle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Franz Kafka
  • Publisher : Everyman's Library
  • Release : 1992-11-03
  • ISBN : 0679417354
  • Pages : 426 pages

Download or read book The Castle written by Franz Kafka and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 1992-11-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Metamorphosis and The Trial, and one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century: Arriving in a village to take up the position of land surveyor for the mysterious lord of a castle, the character known as K. finds himself in a bitter and baffling struggle to contact his new employer and go about his duties. As the villagers and the Castle officials block his efforts at every turn, K.’s consuming quest–quite possibly a self-imposed one–to penetrate the inaccessible heart of the Castle and take its measure is repeatedly frustrated. Kafka once suggested that the would-be surveyor in The Castle is driven by a wish “to get clear about ultimate things,” an unrealizable desire that provided the driving force behind all of Kafka’s dazzlingly uncanny fictions. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author's life and times.

Book Hieroglyphic Tales

Download or read book Hieroglyphic Tales written by Horace Walpole and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funny, absurd, satirical, and disturbing--these stories are Horace Walpole's most original, yet least known writings These short tales can claim to be the first surrealist writings in English--and remain some of the strangest fiction in all literature. They were originally published in 1785 in an edition of six copies, all of which Walpole kept for himself. An extra story is included, which was preserved only in manuscript. Truly bizarre, Walpole's stories defy the fictional conventions of his day, beginning with an often-imitated mock preface explaining that the stories were undoubtedly written a little before the creation of the world, and have ever since been preserved, by oral tradition, in the mountains of Crampcraggiri, an uninhabited island, not yet discovered.

Book Humanism and Good Books in Sixteenth Century England

Download or read book Humanism and Good Books in Sixteenth Century England written by Katherine C. Little and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores sixteenth-century humanism as an origin for the idea of literature as good, even great, books. It argues that humanists located the value of books not only in the goodness of their writing-their eloquence—but also in their capacity to shape readers in good and bad behavior, thoughts, and feelings, in other words, in their morality. To approach humanism in this way, by attending to its moral interests, is to provide a new perspective on periodization, the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance / early modern. That is, humanists did not so much rupture with medieval ideas about literature or with medieval models as they adapted and altered them, offering a new confidence about an old idea: the moral instructiveness of pagan, classical texts for Christian readers. This revaluation of literature was a double-edged sword. On the one hand, humanist confidence inspired authors to invent their own good books—good in style and morals—in morality plays such as Everyman and the Christian Terence tradition and in educational treatises such as Sir Thomas Elyot's Boke of the Governour. On the other hand, humanism placed a new burden on authors, requiring their work to teach and delight. In the wake of humanism, authors struggled to articulate the value of their work for readers, returning to a pre-humanist path that they associated with Geoffrey Chaucer. This medieval-inflected doubt pervades the late sixteenth-century writings of the most prolific and influential Elizabethans-Robert Greene, George Gascoigne, and Edmund Spenser.
