Book excerpt: Education is one aspect of life which we all share, and consequently it provides a common interest. Memories of our own education and school life frequently impinge on our psyche, espcially if we have children undergoing the process. Too often these memories are soberring remiscences punctuated by humeorous recollections which prompt the wry smile and the oft-qupoted anecdote. While Education is a very serious subject, it does have a lighter side which in these days of cutbacks, inspections and media-concentration, helps releiieve the tension. This book is a collection of mad imprints, daft headlines and humorous anecdotes relation to the world of Education. More often than not it is the unintentional jokes which are the funniest, and its compilation contains the most amusing and comical. Suspecting a hidden agenda behind Meredith's accusations, he sets out to clear his name, whatever the consequences and whatever price he has to pay to achieve it.

Download or read book The Classroom at the End of the Hall written by Douglas Evans and published by Scholastic Paperbacks. This book was released on 1997 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You know the classroom at the end of the hall? The one with the tall teacher? And the Pain-In-The-Neck who likes to write his name on the blackboard in snot? Yeah, well, weird stuff has been going on down the hall . . . . First of all, when Roger was cleaning the erasers, out billowed a huge cloud of chalk dust--and a chalk dust genie! And when the genie granted the Roger's wish to be the teacher of the class, Roger got more than he bargained for. Namely, he got himself--Roger--disturbing the class and making everyone, even himself, miserable. And Kenneth--that kid who hates reading? Well, he found a book that can tell his future. But he has to read it to find out what's going to happen. . . . Not to mention what happened to Rosalie, who always copies answers off of other kids' papers. Something was bugging her. A doodlebug. It just crawled into her ear and started telling her the answers to all of her schoolwork. It looked like she was never going to have to cheat again, until Mr. Leeks exterminated the classroom at the end of the hall. Then Rosalie was on her own . . . . The nine laugh-out-loud funny tales in this zany collection teach valuable lessons about teaching, learning, and life in a third-grade classroom.

Download or read book Astronomy and particle physics written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-05-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science and Technology Committee warns that the UK's prominence in astronomy and particle physics, and its ability to attract and inspire the next generation of scientists in these areas, could be at risk if reduced budgets hit the UK's growth prospects, reputation and expertise. Although science did relatively well in the recent Spending Review, funding for astronomy sees a total reduction of 21% over the next four years compared with 2010-11. More starkly, comparing 2014/15 with 2005, spending in astronomy and particle physics will be around 50% lower than its level six years ago. This is worrying, particularly when set against the planned increased investment in science and innovation by the UK's international peers as part of long-term strategies to ensure economic growth. The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) - the research council which funds research and facility development in astronomy, particle physics and nuclear physics - is risking the UK's ability to stay at the forefront of future developments by focusing its astronomy and particle physics programmes into fewer areas. A case in point is the UK's planned withdrawal from all Northern Hemisphere optical and ground based astronomical facilities, which could see UK leadership and competitive advantage being handed over to international peers. The Committee is also highly critical of past STFC strategies, especially its failure to incorporate into policy documents details of the planned withdrawals. The report also addresses the future of the National Schools Observatory and outreach, which is essential to inspire the next generation of scientists.
