Book Hugger Mugger in the Louvre

Download or read book Hugger Mugger in the Louvre written by Elliot Paul and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gendarmes are baffled and all Paris is agog at the disappearance of a rare Watteau print. Enter master sleuth Homer Evans, whose hilarious approach to crime-solving follows a twisted trail from the darkest recesses of the Louvre to underworld lairs, the studios of shady art dealers, and an insane asylum. Evans and his zany associates—including his sharpshooting girlfriend, Mademoiselle Montana, and his drinking buddy, Gonzo—trace a bizarre series of clues to uncover an ever-thickening plot involving fraud, kidnapping, and murder. Author Elliot Paul satirized the conventions of detective fiction with the first Homer Evans adventure, The Mysterious Mickey Finn. This sequel, hailed as "an excellent cocktail" by The New Republic, offers another furious frolic that upends every convention of the traditional murder mystery.

Book David Lynch and the American West

Download or read book David Lynch and the American West written by Rob E. King and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-02-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection convenes diverse analyses of David Lynch's newly conceived, dreamlike neo-noir representations of the American West, a first in studies of regionalism and indigeneity in his films. Twelve essays and three interviews address Lynch's image of the American West and its impact on the genre. Fans and scholars of David Lynch's work will find a study of his interpretations of the West as place and myth, spanning from his first feature film, Eraserhead (1977), through the third season of Twin Peaks in 2017. Symbols of the West in Lynch's work can be as obvious as an Odessa, Texas street sign or as subtle as the visual themes rooted in indigenous artistry. Explorations of cowboy masculinity, violence, modern frontier narratives and representations of indigeneity are all included in this collection.

Book Manifold Utopia

Download or read book Manifold Utopia written by Marc Delrez and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Janet Frame's fiction addresses with unusual directness the Utopian momentum that underpins her concern with fundamental social issues, traditionally highlighted in existing criticism of her work. The idea behind this book is that Frame's critique of society, while it is offered for its own sake on one level, should not lead us to neglect the author's more speculative interest in an alternative conception of the human person. Her engagement in a species of experimental portraiture proves elusive, though, owing to an indirectness of approach that usually takes the form of thematic circumscription, rather than explicit representation. For example, the figure of the mute child, recurrent in her work, may well testify to a concern with the plight of the mentally ill; but on another level it also points to an envelope of intractable experience which it is the artist’s task to penetrate and explain. Such aspiration is inseparable from the search for a new medium of expression, felt to be necessary if one is to meet the challenge of apprehending the scope of pioneering knowledge. This close reading of the novels reveals that the alternative dimension of experience to be found in Frame’s novels is characterized by an intact capacity for remembering, or for imaginatively re-creating, eclipsed aspects of the present. Frame's view of Utopia thus turns out to be manifold: it is existential and ontological, linguistic and epistemological, but also historical and political. An unravelling of these intertwined strains then serves to clarify the complex question of Frame's post-colonial sensibility, which cannot be said to rely on a sense of rigid identity, whether national or otherwise.

Book Split Season 1981

Download or read book Split Season 1981 written by Jeff Katz and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "1981 was a watershed moment in American sports, when players turned an oligarchy of owners into a game where they had a real voice. Midway through the season, a game-changing strike ripped baseball apart, the first time a season had ever been stopped in the middle because of a strike. Marvin Miller and the Players' Association squared off against Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and the owners in a fight to protect players' rights to free agency and defend America's pastime. Though a time-bomb was ticking as the 1981 season began, the game rose to impressive--and now legendary--heights. Pete Rose chased Stan Musial's National League hit record and rookie Fernando Valenzuela was creating a sensation as the best pitcher in the league when the stadiums went dark and the players went on strike. For the first time in modern history, there were first and second-half champions and the two teams with the overall best records in the National League were not awarded playoff berths. When the season resumed after an absence of 712 games, the season picked up again with a Nolan Ryan no-hitter. The Dodgers bested their long-time rivals in a Yankees-Dodgers World Series, the last classic matchup of those storied opponents. Pulling from incredible and extensive interviews with almost all of the strike's major players, Split Season: 1981 brings back the on-field and off-field drama of an unforgettable baseball year"--

Book London and its genius loci

Download or read book London and its genius loci written by Philipp Röttgers and published by Büchner-Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London is a powerful and mysterious city – its spirit stands outside of time, certain places have influenced the behaviour of its citizens. Philipp Röttgers leads you to these places. Follow him into the heart of darkness, into the area of Jack the Ripper, to the churches of Nicholas Hawksmoor, along the routes of "From Hell". Meet William Blake and walk along "Ripper Street". Discover London's ›genius loci‹, its ›spirit of place‹. This alternative travel guide has two sides: A scientific trip through the depiction of London's ›genius loci‹ in literature by authors such as Iain Sinclair, Alan Moore, Ben Aaronovitch, Neil Gaiman and Peter Ackroyd. And the tour stories, that lead you to the historical ›genius loci‹. Connect places, become the flaneur, the walker, the wanderer. This book approaches London the only two ways, according to Röttgers, that it can be experienced properly: through literature and through walking.

Book Mimesis as Make Believe

  • Author : Kendall L. Walton
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 1993-10-15
  • ISBN : 0674268229
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book Mimesis as Make Believe written by Kendall L. Walton and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations—in visual arts and in fiction—play an important part in our lives and culture. Kendall Walton presents here a theory of the nature of representation, which illuminates its many varieties and goes a long way toward explaining its importance. Drawing analogies to children’s make believe activities, Walton constructs a theory that addresses a broad range of issues: the distinction between fiction and nonfiction, how depiction differs from description, the notion of points of view in the arts, and what it means for one work to be more “realistic” than another. He explores the relation between appreciation and criticism, the character of emotional reactions to literary and visual representations, and what it means to be caught up emotionally in imaginary events. Walton’s theory also provides solutions to the thorny philosophical problems of the existence—or ontological standing—of fictitious beings, and the meaning of statements referring to them. And it leads to striking insights concerning imagination, dreams, nonliteral uses of language, and the status of legends and myths. Throughout Walton applies his theoretical perspective to particular cases; his analysis is illustrated by a rich array of examples drawn from literature, painting, sculpture, theater, and film. Mimesis as Make-Believe is important reading for everyone interested in the workings of representational art.
