Book excerpt: The results of an evaluation of two flux-switching models for magnetic cores, the Nitzan model and the Betts and Bishop model, are presented. The two models are compared on the basis of the types of core switching each describes and the fidelity with which each predicts the output voltage waveform of a ferrite core with inside diameter of 50 mils (1.27 mm) and outside diameter of 80 mils (2.03 mm). The results indicate that the Nitzan model is more accurate and more nearly complete because it describes shuttling and partial switching. The Nitzan model is more applicable to cores of the same material but different sizes because it uses separate parameters related to the core materials and the core dimensions. A method is presented by which both models can be extended to describe more accurately the switching of cores with smaller ratios of inside to outside diameter.

This paper presents most of the analytical flux-switching models which have been proposed in the past, together with some new ones, in a common terminology. These models are compared with each other and with experimental results whic are included. For generality, the models are considered as descriptive of the magnetization M (Loop magnetization in amp/meter)AS A FUNCTION OF T E APPD MAGNETIC EXCITATION H. The analytical models are evaluated by comparing experimental phi(t) (Time in seconds) curves from thick-walled cores with analytical curves obtained by integrating M(t) models over core dimensions for a number of different constant mmf values. The material (Telemeter T5) used for the experiments is a low-threshold, square-loop ferrite. Considerable care was taken to maintain good accuracy throughout the entire process of experimental verification T e paper contains discussions and conclusions on the relative merits of the various models considered.
