Book excerpt: Tests were undertaken to determine the feasibility of producing a superplastic forming capability in a commercial Al-2024 alloy through processing by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), where this alloy was selected because it contains no scandium or zirconium additions that are generally beneficial in retaining an array of small grains. Processing by ECAP produced grain sizes in the range from 0.3 to 0.5 micronmeter and static annealing showed these ultrafine grains were reasonably stable at temperatures up to 700 K. Superplastic elongations were achieved after ECAP with a maximum elongation of 500% at 673 K when using a strain rate of 1.0 x l0(exp -2) s(exp-1) The strain rate sensitivity was measured as 0.3 suggesting that dislocation glide is the rate-controlling mechanism. These results demonstrate the potential for achieving high tensile ductilities in conventional commercial aluminum alloys through processing by ECAP.

Book excerpt: Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was applied to achieve grain refinement of Al-3 mass%Mg alloys containing 0.2 mass%Sc. 0.2 mass%Fe or 0.1 mass%Zn The thermal stability of the fine-grained structures was examined by conducting static annealing experiments. The fine grain sizes produced by ECAP were essentially retained up to a temperature of 523K for the Fe-containing and Zr-containing alloys and up to a temperature as high as 773 K for the Sc-containing alloy. The three alloys with Sc. Fe and Zr additions were pulled to failure in tension at 523 K corresponding to 0.59Tm. where Tm is the absolute melting point of the alloy, and maximum elongations of 640%, 370% and 390% were obtained at an initial strain rate of 3.3 x l0-4 s-1 respectively. Such elongations resulted in more than three times or approximately twice the elongation achieved in a binary Al-3%M alloy. It is shown that either Fe or Zr may be used as an alternative element in place of Sc to attain low temperature superplasticity. Tensile testing was also conducted on the Sc-containing ternary alloy at a temperature as low as 473K corresponding to O.54Tm. A maximum elongation of 420% was attained at an initial strain rate of 3.3 % l0-4 s-1. This appears to be the lowest homologous temperature reported to date for superplasticity of Al-based alloys.

Book excerpt: The applications for superplastic forming (SPF) are currently limited because the strain rates involved in the forming process tend to be relatively slow (typically 10(exp -3)-10 (exp -1) 1 s(exp -1). There would be a very significant increase in the applications for SPF if the forming rates were increased to 10(exp -1) 1 s(exp -1). It can be shown on theoretical grounds that SPF-may be achieved at faster rates by reducing the grain size of the superplastic material. Unfortunately, it is generally not possible to achieve grain sizes as small as the submicrometer level using conventional thermo-mechanical processing. This paper demonstrates the potential for achieving ultrafine grain sizes through the application of severe plastic deformation. It is shown that two aluminum- based alloys exhibit superplastic elongations at very rapid strain rates when the alloys are processed using the procedure of Equal-Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP) in which the samples are pressed through a die containing a channel bent into an L-shaped configuration. It is demonstrated also that samples processed by ECAP can be Superplastically formed at very rapid strain rates.

Furthermore, if these ultra fine grains are reasonably stable at elevated temperatures, there is a potential for achieving high tensile ductilities, and superplastic elongations, in alloys that are generally not superplastic. In addition, the production of ultra fine grains leads to the occurrence of superplastic flow at strain rates that are significantly faster than in conventional alloys so that processing by SPD introduces the possibility of using these alloys for the rapid fabrication of complex parts through superplastic forming operations. This paper examines the development of superplasticity in various aluminum alloys processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP).

Book excerpt: Materials strengthened by conventional methods such as strain hardening, solute additions, precipitation and grain size refinement are often adopted in industrial processes. But there is limitation to the amount of deformation that these conventional methods can impact to a material. This study focused on the review of major mechanical properties of aluminum alloys in the presence of an ultrafine grain size into polycrystalline materials by subjecting the metal to an intense plastic straining through simple shear without any corresponding change in the cross-sectional dimensions of the sample. The effect of the heavy strain rate on the microstructure of aluminum alloys was in refinement of the coarse grains into ultrafine grain size by introducing a high density of dislocations and subsequently re-arranging the dislocations to form an array of grain boundaries. Hence, this investigation is aimed at gathering contributions on the influence of equal channel angular extrusion toward improving the mechanical properties of the aluminum alloys through intense plastic strain.

Experiments have established that much finer grain sizes, in the near-nanometer range, may be achieved in Al-based alloys by using an intense plastic straining technique such as equal-channel angular (ECA) pressing. This report presents the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of several ultrafine-grained Al-based alloys processed by ECA pressing. The first demonstration of enhanced superplasticity at low temperatures and high strain rates revealed in commercial Al-alloys, having ultrafine-grained structure, are described.
