Book Evaluation of the Report Future Directions for Secondary Education in the Northern Territory

Download or read book Evaluation of the Report Future Directions for Secondary Education in the Northern Territory written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge for the Northern Territory Government is to improve school outcomes generally and not just those of secondary school. Improving secondary school outcomes is also a matter of improving primary school outcomes. To that extent, the 'Future Directions for Secondary Education' Report had to look at a broader canvas than secondary school education. The Report presents a comprehensive plan for change that includes many positive suggestions and recommendations such as those relating to improved teaching and learning practices and the approach to Indigenous education. This publication evaluates the report. The plan contains several weaknesses and omissions. A major flaw is the undue emphasis given to structural change in school governance and management, a proposal which is not justified by the research evidence and which is likely to detract from the implementation of more effective ways to improve student outcomes.

Book Education Policy Reforms of Secondary Education in the Northern Territory

Download or read book Education Policy Reforms of Secondary Education in the Northern Territory written by Bill Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original study of the Ramsay Committee report entitled "Future Directions for Secondary Education in the Northern Territory" (the "Secondary Review") was presented in December 2004 at the ANZCIES National Conference in Melbourne. This was prior to the Northern Territory Government deciding how many of the recommendations of the "Secondary Review" would be implemented and what additional measures would be taken to improve secondary education in the Northern Territory. In February 2005, the Northern Territory Labor Government stated its plans for secondary education. On 18 June, 2005, there was a Northern Territory election in which the main features of the Labor manifesto were economic management, health and education. The Labor government was returned with a greatly increased majority. Currently many features of the government's educational policy are in the early stages of implementation. It should be noted that websites formerly under the "priority education" banner have been replaced by sites labelled "betterschools." The full text of the "Secondary Review" is still available online as indicated in the references. This paper provides information about the Northern Territory and the "Secondary Review," the reactions of different interest groups to the "Secondary Review," specific issues of middle schools, leaning precincts, Indigenous education, the Northern Territory Open Education Centre and senior secondary education. The study of secondary schools in the Northern Territory continues, though the author of this paper remains disappointed that more has not done in Indigenous education by the Northern Territory Government. Terms of Reference are appended. [This paper was published in: Global Pedagogies, Equity, Access and Democracy in Education (Editors Joseph Zadja and Peter Ninnes) Refereed Proceedings of 32nd Annual Conference of ANZCIES: 3-5 December 2004, St Patrick's Campus (Melbourne) Australian Catholic University (pp. 297-306).].

Book Language Description Informed by Theory

Download or read book Language Description Informed by Theory written by Rob Pensalfini and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores how linguistic theories inform the ways in which languages are described. Theories, as representations of linguistic categories, guide the field linguist to look for various phenomena without presupposing their necessary existence and provide the tools to account for various sets of data across different languages. A goal of linguistic description is to represent the full range of language structures for any given language. The chapters in this book cover various sub-disciplines of linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, and anthropological linguistics, drawing upon theoretical approaches such as prosodic Phonology, Enhancement theory, Distributed Morphology, Minimalist syntax, Lexical Functional Grammar, and Kinship theory. The languages described in this book include Australian languages (Pama-Nyungan and non-Pama-Nyungan), Romance languages as well as English. This volume will be of interest to researchers in both descriptive and theoretical linguistics.

Book Future Directions in Applied Linguistics

Download or read book Future Directions in Applied Linguistics written by Christina Gitsaki and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-08 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of applied linguistics covers a diverse range of research and practice, and has developed somewhat differently in various parts of the world due to variations in local socio-cultural conditions, needs and issues. However, this local diversity does not reflect a field that is incoherent, but rather one which has a broad, shared international agenda which is invigorated by the diversity brought to the field by local perspectives. The papers in this volume represent some of the major global directions that research in applied linguistics is taking and shed light on how language is used to affect practice. The aim of this volume is to explore some of the key methods and issues which are guiding applied linguistics into the future through an examination of these issues in local contexts, thereby providing a basis for understanding the global directions the field is taking. These directions follow two historically defined paths: those related to educational studies and language teaching, and those related to social issues involving language. In the volume, half the papers focus on the former, examining issues of language teaching, language teacher education and second language acquisition, while the other half examine social issues related to language use, bilingualism and multilingualism, and language policy and planning. The collection of papers presented in this book illustrates how these traditional themes are influenced by the rising forces of globalisation and the use of technology, thus exemplifying both the new and old ways in which the study of language is realised.

Book Higher Degree by Research

Download or read book Higher Degree by Research written by Peter Anderson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides insights from Indigenous higher degree research (HDR) students on supervision practices in an Australian context. It examines findings from qualitative studies conducted with Indigenous HDR students from different academic disciplines, enrolled higher education institutions across Australia, and supervisors of Indigenous HDR students. Six types of data and their thematic analyses are presented, to understand the needs and experiences of both Indigenous HDR students and supervisors of Indigenous HDR students. This book also unpacks assumptions and commonly held beliefs about Indigenous HDR students, and shares what Indigenous HDRs report they need to experience success in higher education. It reports the experiences of supervisors of Indigenous HDR students, and explore further opportunities which enhance the higher education experiences of Indigenous HDR students. This book also suggests how successful relationships between Indigenous HDR students, and their supervisors may be fostered, and aims to be a useful resource for Indigenous peoples wishing to pursue higher education, and HDR supervisors in countries with Indigenous populations.

Book Harmful Sexual Behaviour in Young Children and Pre Teens

Download or read book Harmful Sexual Behaviour in Young Children and Pre Teens written by Lesley-anne Ey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been considerable research and authorship on child sexual abuse, however, much of this research has focused on adult perpetrators and child victims. Less attention has been paid to children’s harmful sexual behaviour and the multitude of influences. Harmful Sexual Behaviour in Young Children and Pre-Teens provides evidence-based understanding on: typical sexual development versus harmful sexual behaviour; the prevalence and impacts associated with harmful sexual behaviour; Australian laws, policies and educator responsibilities; responses and support systems for children who display harmful sexual behaviour; and the implications and challenges for future practice. This book provides understandings that directly respond to the recent Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse recommendation 10.1 to address (a) primary prevention strategies to educate family, community members, carers, and professionals about preventing harmful sexual behaviours (b) secondary prevention strategies to ensure early intervention when harmful sexual behaviours are developing and (c) tertiary intervention strategies to address harmful sexual behaviours.. The authors present a review of psychological, sociological, legal, and educational research to inform and support professionals involved in the wellbeing and education of children to understand, manage, and reduce dysfunctional sexual development in children.

Book Genre and Institutions

Download or read book Genre and Institutions written by Frances Christie and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines genres as instances of social processes, enacting a range of important institutional practices, hence also shaping people's subjectivities. Genres represent purposive and staged ways of building means in a culture. The book's particular claim to originality is that, using systemic functional grammar, it demonstrates how given genres build or enact social practice, how educational setting provide contexts in which some apprenticeship into such genres occurs, and how theorizing about such matters helps build a theory of social action, revealing how powerful is the systemic functional analysis in addressing questions concerning the social construction of reality. The discussion is built around extensive analysis of instances of texts collected in a number of worksites and school settings. While most are instances of written genres, some are spoken, most notably the chapter that is devoted to the discussion of the spoken classroom texts in which the teaching and learning of the written genres take place.
