Book Evaluation of the Geophysical Survey Systems Inc Radar for the Detection of Unexploded Ordnance

Download or read book Evaluation of the Geophysical Survey Systems Inc Radar for the Detection of Unexploded Ordnance written by Melvin H. Friedman and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MERADCOM was tasked by USATHAMA to administer and monitor a contract with Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. on the utility of a ground-penetrating radar for the detection of buried unexploded ordnance (UXO). This report documents that evaluation. Disposition of military installations known or suspected to be contaminated with UXO has become a matter of increasing concern to the Department of the Army. Reutilization of DA lands previously utilized as impact areas, demolition ranges, and munition burial sites is significantly restricted. In particular, any such lands declared excess to Army needs are precluded from being turned over to productive civil disposition until determined to be free of hazardous UXO contamination. In order to define the scope of work required for cleanup and to plan and support actual UXO recovery and disposal operations, an effective UXO detection and location system must be developed to define the extent of any such UXO contamination; i.e., type munitions, quantity, conditions, depth of burial, etc. Final certification of such land as free of UXO contamination could potentially be based on the findings of surveys done with such systems. The GSSI radar was evaluated and in its present form was found to be unsuitable for the task for two reasons: (1) it detected only a small portion of the buried targets and (2) there were many more false detections than true detections. Book Research of Ground Penetrating Radar for Detection of Mines and Unexploded Ordnance Current Status and Research Strategy

This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of an IDA assessment of the state of research on ground penetrating radar (GPR) as applied to countermine and unexploded ordnance clearance. This report examines existing GPR research and development efforts with emphasis on missions where GPR has the potential to provide a unique capability and to achieve operationally meaningful performance. We identify data collections and analyses that will be necessary both to make decisions about the suitability of GPR for particular missions and to achieve performance gains necessary for operational utility. The potential capabilities of ground penetrating radar could, if realized, make it a useful tool for the detection of mines and UXO. These potential capabilities, however, have not been demonstrated in practice. In most cases, performance is limited by clutter, not by insufficient target signal for detection in noise. Thus, discrimination of targets from clutter is the fundamental problem to be solved to improve GPR target detection performance. Among the numerous research efforts that must be undertaken to advance GPR in any application are soil characterization, discrimination, and modeling. Since it is likely that radar will be paired with another sensor for any application, research to support sensor fusion is important.

Book Remote Detection of Unexploded Ordnance Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book Remote Detection of Unexploded Ordnance Ground Penetrating Radar written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Congress, through Public law 98-212, charged the Department of Defense to institute a remedial action program to materials and ordnance. As part of the response, the US Army Corps of Engineers tasked the US Navy, as the lead service in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), to develop and demonstrate different systems each capable of detecting, locating, and partially identifying shallow buried, unexploded ordnance. The Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Center (NAVEODTECHCEN), through the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and various contractors, reviewed current technology and identified three technological approaches offering high promise of success on a responsive time scale: (1) surface electromagnetics, (2) surface magnetometry, and (3) borehole electromagnetics/magnetometry. A demonstration prototype Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Ordnance Search System (RADAR), based on surface electromagnetics, was developed and delivered to the NAVEODTECHCEN under Contract Number N00014- 86-C-2266.

Book Millimeter Wave Ground Penetrating Radar Imaging for Unexploded Ordnance

Download or read book Millimeter Wave Ground Penetrating Radar Imaging for Unexploded Ordnance written by James T. Do and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, we present a millimeter wave (mmW) ground penetrating radar (GPR) for imaging buried metal targets. Current mine/unexploded ordnance (UXO) detection technologies merely detect the presence of metal without discrimination and suffer high rate of false positive detection. Capturing high resolution images is critical for reducing the rate of false positive detection in mine/UXO sweeping which exacerbates the inefficiencies in mine/UXO clearance. We demonstrate a mmW GPR scanning reflectometer capable of capturing mm resolution images of metallic targets buried in sand up to a depth of 25cm at a stand-off distance of 40cm from the antenna to the ground surface. The reflectometer operates from 75 to 110GHz with a dynamic range of 120dB. An XY scanning platform is used to displace the reflectometer over an area with sub-mm precision in a raster scanning pattern. Images are generated via a 3D holographic imaging technique which uses an f-k migration algorithm. We then compare images of the buried targets generated via the 3D holographic imaging technique with images generated using a back-projection imaging algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of mmW 3D holographic imaging with a stand-off monostatic transceiver for GPR application.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Theory and Applications

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Theory and Applications written by Harry M. Jol and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a rapidly developing field that has seen tremendous progress over the past 15 years. The development of GPR spans aspects of geophysical science, technology, and a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. It is the breadth of applications that has made GPR such a valuable tool in the geophysical consulting and geotechnical engineering industries, has lead to its rapid development, and inspired new areas of research in academia. The topic of GPR has gone from not even being mentioned in geophysical texts ten years ago to being the focus of hundreds of research papers and special issues of journals dedicated to the topic. The explosion of primary literature devoted to GPR technology, theory and applications, has lead to a strong demand for an up-to-date synthesis and overview of this rapidly developing field. Because there are specifics in the utilization of GPR for different applications, a review of the current state of development of the applications along with the fundamental theory is required. This book will provide sufficient detail to allow both practitioners and newcomers to the area of GPR to use it as a handbook and primary research reference.*Review of GPR theory and applications by leaders in the field*Up-to-date information and references*Effective handbook and primary research reference for both experienced practitioners and newcomers
