Book Teacher Pay and Teacher Quality

Download or read book Teacher Pay and Teacher Quality written by Dale Ballou and published by W. E. Upjohn Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks whether higher salaries have improved the quality of newly recruited teachers. It reviews data on the characteristics of beginning teachers and shows how important features of the labor market for teachers systematically undermine efforts to improve teacher quality. The text also offers a comparison of personnel policies and staffing patterns in public and private schools, focusing on national trends in teacher recruitment. It discusses ways to measure teacher quality, examines several indicators of quality, such as student achievement and principals' ratings of their staffs, and then uses these findings to assess the evidence on salary growth and teacher recruitment. It looks at what has gone wrong with teacher recruitment and offers an analysis of the operation of the teacher labor market so as to interpret findings. These results are used to review the implications for teacher recruitment of various other reforms of current interest. The text also describes the prospects for reform by examining salary differentiation and rising standards and assesses personnel policies in the private sector to see whether private schools offer a model for reforming public education. This section details teacher quality, working conditions, and compensation policies. The book concludes with a summation of its major points. (Contains an index, approximately 315 references, 12 data tables and 17 figures.) (RJM)

Book excerpt: There is a real need for a clear analysis and investigation of what the "crisis" in teaching actually is. By exploring the definition of the teaching crisis, investigating the evidence for its existence and reforms proposed to "solve" it, and studying the possible effects of proposed reforms, the authors of Crisis in Teaching address this need. Their work constitutes one of the first sustained and critical analyses of teachers and teaching in the contemporary situation. The authors, among the nation's leading critical thinkers in the field of education, reflect a variety of perspectives as they attempt to unravel the current rhetoric of crisis and question solutions that are, in effect, too often simplistic and superficial in their analyses and proposals.

Book Excellence in Education

Download or read book Excellence in Education written by Denis P. Doyle and published by A E I Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a brief description and analysis of the activity of State governments in making educational policy during the past two years. The following three trends are cited as important in the States' increased role: (1) increased State spending on education relative to Federal and local spending; (2) court ordered school finance reform which has led to equalization of spending between districts; and (3) State legislative interest due to the increased spending and a realization of the importance of education to economic growth and social progress. Following an introduction, section two of the book reviews the context for State reforms and discusses the improved professionalism of State governments, the States' interest in educational quality, and the growing perception that high quality education is necessary to ensure economic competitiveness. The third section briefly reviews the States' recent efforts to improve the quality of education, describing the range of new initiatives and summarizing several leading examples of major reforms. The topics covered include teachers, the academic experience, financial support, education organization and structure, and Federal initiatives. The fourth section examines a series of long- and short-range concerns that will have a major impact on the ultimate success or failure of the State efforts to improve the schools, and a final section provides some concluding observations.
