Book Evaluation of Traffic Responsive Control on the Reston Parkway Arterial Network

Download or read book Evaluation of Traffic Responsive Control on the Reston Parkway Arterial Network written by Montasir Abbas and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic responsive plan selection (TRPS) control is considered an effective operational mode in traffic signal systems. Its efficiency stems from the fact that it can capture variations in traffic patterns and switch timing plans based on existing traffic conditions. Most of the research performed to date has focused on either small traffic networks-with up to five intersections-or theoretical networks. Past research has also focused on the threshold mechanism implemented in the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) traffic controllers. There is very limited research on the pattern-matching mechanism implemented in the 170 controllers. This report documents a new approach to generating traffic scenarios for large networks, addressing issues such as the unequal traffic distribution and the large combination of traffic movements from multiple intersections. This approach is based on the selection of significant critical movements controlling the network using statistical correlation analysis of actual detector data and the use of synthetic origin-destination analysis of the entire network. The proposed approach was applied in the design of the traffic responsive control mode for the Reston Parkway arterial network, which has 14 intersections. Detector data were used to validate the results of the proposed approach. The validation process showed that the traffic system was correctly modeled and sufficiently represented by the proposed approach. Multi-objective optimization was used to generate the final timing plans and the TRPS pattern-matching parameters. Simulation analysis revealed that implementation of the traffic responsive control mode in the Reston Parkway network can achieve an average delay reduction of 27 percent and an average stops reduction of 14 percent on weekends and an average delay reduction of 18 percent and an average stops reduction of 21 percent on regular week days. The methodology documented in this report should be followed to implement TRPS control on large arterials in an optimal and stable manner. Optimal and stable operation of TRPS could significantly reduce congestion while capitalizing on existing traffic control infrastructure with a 46:1 benefit-cost ratio.

Book Intersections Control and Safety

Download or read book Intersections Control and Safety written by Antonio Pratelli and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting off a new series on Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering the book aims to help bridge the gap between research and practice, encouraging a critical dialogue in different, specific, subjects spanning innovation, development and technology transfer. Those who offer innovation often do not meet the immediate needs of practitioners, especially in the traditional field of civil engineering. Still, the adequate diffusion of research results and wisdom derived from practical experience are crucial to both theoretical underpinnings and technical applications. The papers forming this book are devoted to intersection control and safety and have been selected bearing in mind the criteria stated above. That is, these papers provide both scholarly contribution as well as vision for application. As a general rule, about one-third of all highway crashes happen at intersections. This rule holds for many different countries. Intersection crashes also represent a significant portion of serious injury crashes, and by right are receiving considerable attention from researchers and practitioners alike. This book is therefore devoted to relevant safety aspects of road intersections and innovative features in design and operations that may address the intersection crash problem. The thirteen papers are more or less equally devoted to roundabouts and signals. These papers cover many of the most recent and emerging issues related to intersection control and safety. Topics range from design details to driver perception, from pedestrians behaviour to signal timing, and from capacity models to red-light running. The book will be useful for those wishing to expand their knowledge of this ever important subject area.

Book Distributed Situation Awareness in Road Transport

Download or read book Distributed Situation Awareness in Road Transport written by Paul M. Salmon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we design transport environments that cater to the situation awareness needs of different end-users? This book answers this question by showcasing how state-of-the-art human factors theory and methods can be used to understand how situation awareness differs across drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians and creates new designs that cater to these diverse situation awareness needs. Written by experts in the field and based on a major program of work funded by the Australian Research Council, this book outlines the distributed situation awareness model and provides practical guidance on how to study situation awareness naturalistically and how to create designs that support, rather than hinder, situation awareness. The book closes by outlining outline a generic framework to support similar applications in other areas, and discusses future applications in areas such as vehicle automation, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. Features Challenges traditional road safety analysis, design processes and conventions Outlines a novel on-road study methodology for analyzing naturalistic interactions among drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians Presents a review of state-of-the-art situation awareness theory and methods Provides practical guidance on a series of human factors methods Describes a framework to support the design of transport environments Evaluates new intersection concepts that encompass features designed to prevent collisions at intersections

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent traffic and transport systems combine the skills and management technologies of engineering, artificial intelligence, information technology and telecommunications to improve the efficiency of traffic and transport, benefitting the environment by reducing air and noise pollution and helping to create traffic free zones in cities. The management of public transport systems and vehicle fleets can also be improved by the provision of on-line information and better communication. This book presents the proceedings of ICITT2022, the 6th International Conference on Intelligent Traffic and Transportation, held in Paris, France from 25 – 27 September 2022. ICITT is a major annual event for the academics, researchers and industrialists engaged in intelligent traffic and transportation research, and is a friendly and inclusive platform that brings together a broad community of researchers sharing the common goal of developing and managing the engineering and technology key to sustaining the success of the intelligent traffic and transportation industries. The theme of the 2022 conference was Smart Digital Traffic and Transportation, and the book includes 15 papers, selected after a rigorous peer-review process. The papers are divided into 4 sections, which cover intelligent traffic and transportation; transportation in future smart cities; mobility and cyber-physical systems; and intelligent automation and ICT-enabled collaborative global systems. Covering a wide range of topics, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of intelligent traffic and transportation.
