Book excerpt: In recent years the effort devoted to assuring both the safety and reliability of commercial nuclear fission power reactors has markedly increased. The incentives for performing this work are large since the resulting im provement in plant productivity translates into lower fuel costs and, more importantly, reduced reliance on imported oil. Reliability and availability of nuclear power plants, whether fission or fusion, demand that more attention be focused on the behavior of materials. Recent experiences with fission power indicate that the basic properties of materials, which categorize their reliable behavior under specified conditions, need reinforcement to assure trouble-free operation for the expected service life. The pursuit of additional information con tinues to demand a better understanding of some of the observed anom alous behavior, and of the margin of resistance of materials to unpre dictable service conditions. It is also apparent that, next to plasma heating and confinement, materials selection represents the most serious chal lenge to the introduction of fusion power. The recognition of the importance of materials performance to nu clear plant performance has sustained a multimillion dollar worldwide research and development effort that has yielded significant results, both in quantification of the performance limits of materials in current use and the development and qualification of new materials. Most of this infor mation appears in the open literature in the form of research reports, journal articles, and conference proceedings.

Book excerpt: Loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) tests performed in the Loss-of-Fluid Test (LOFT) Facility provide an important data base for verification of thermal-hydraulic computer models. An important parameter which must be known for LOCA model evaluation is the initial fuel rod stored energy prior to initiation of a LOCA test. While fuel rod surface temperatures are measured in the LOFT tests, pellet internal temperatures are not; thus, the fuel stored energy must be estimated via computer predictions. A method has been evaluated to estimate fuel rod stored energy in the LOFT experiments based on the measured post-critical heat flux (CHF) cladding temperature rise. This summary compares the stored energy as determined using the post-CHF cladding temperature evaluation to that calculated from best-estimate fuel code predictions for LOFT LOCA Tests L2-2 and L2-3. These tests simulated a large break in the reactor vessel inlet coolant pipe of a pressurized water reactor.

Book excerpt: The FRAP-T6 code was extended to calculate: (1) fuel surface azimuthal temperature distribution; (2) work done on cladding by internal pressure; and (3) azimuthal heat conduction in the cladding. The extensions were assessed by comparing calculated and measured cladding ballooning characteristics for four in-pile fuel rod tests. The assessment showed that the calculation of the fuel surface azimuthal temperature distribution improved the calculations of cladding ballooning. Both calculations and experimental results indicate that coplanar blockage due to cladding ballooning is unlikely during a large break LOCA.
