Book Collection and Analysis of Seismic Wave Propagation Data

Download or read book Collection and Analysis of Seismic Wave Propagation Data written by David E. Willis and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes one year of theoretical and applied research on propagation of seismic waves and techniques for analyzing data. The main objectives were to determine the frequency and energy of seismic signatures, and investigate attenuation, patterns of azimuthal radiation from source regions, and methods of determining the type of motion at the source. Natural and artificial sources were studied to develop diagnostic aids for distinguishing between earthquakes and underground nuclear detonations. Equipment for selection, reformatting, and digital-to-analog conversion for digitally recorded LASA data was constructed and is being checked out. Several approaches for using the parallel computational capabilities of optics for LASA data were developed. A study of background noise and reciprocity for teleseismic events as recorded on the bottom of a large fresh water lake has commenced with the emplacement of three-component seismometers in Lake Superior. Array data have been used for crustal studies on the Eastern United States. Digital mode filtering was investigated. A perturbation theory for seismic sources was developed. (Author).

Book Development and Evaluation of a New Regional Seismic Array in Fennoscandia

Download or read book Development and Evaluation of a New Regional Seismic Array in Fennoscandia written by Svein Mykkeltveit and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this effort is to conduct research on how several regional seismic arrays can be employed together using the pooled seismic data in a simultaneous processing scheme. A site for deployment of a new array was identified in northern Norway and final approval for permission to deploy an array at this site was granted in early July 1987. This report describes the work associated with the different tasks of the site preparation and field system deployment, the arrangements for satellite transmission of data from the array site to NORSAR's data processing center at Kjeller, and the installation of an interim system for acquiring and archiving data at Kjeller. A central terminal building was constructed to house the core of the field system. Approximately 30 km of both fiber optic and power cables were trenched to connect the seismometer sites with the central building. 25 seismometer surface vaults were built, and a borehole for the broadband seismometer was prepared at the center of the array. The system was ready for operation in early November. Keywords: Beam forming. (EDC).

Book Improved Seismic Monitoring Improved Decision Making

Download or read book Improved Seismic Monitoring Improved Decision Making written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved Seismic Monitoringâ€"Improved Decision-Making, describes and assesses the varied economic benefits potentially derived from modernizing and expanding seismic monitoring activities in the United States. These benefits include more effective loss avoidance regulations and strategies, improved understanding of earthquake processes, better engineering design, more effective hazard mitigation strategies, and improved emergency response and recovery. The economic principles that must be applied to determine potential benefits are reviewed and the report concludes that although there is insufficient information available at present to fully quantify all the potential benefits, the annual dollar costs for improved seismic monitoring are in the tens of millions and the potential annual dollar benefits are in the hundreds of millions.

Book Portable Seismic Array System

Download or read book Portable Seismic Array System written by Francis A. Crowley and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 21-element portable seismic array system developed to measure the spatial and temporal characteristics of seismic waves is characterized by ruggedness, flexibility of aperture and channel response, transportability, minimal manpower requirements, operational simplicity, unattended operation, and ability to withstand climatic extremes. The system performance relates to the local environment by delineating signal and noise coherency loss. These qualities are advantageous for monitoring earth motions affecting the performance of motion-sensitive instrumentation, for relating the seismic wave field to geology in teleseismic detection problems, for discriminating between manufactured sources in areas of seismic surveillance, and for subsurface crustal mapping of hardened site areas. Book Earthquake Source Asymmetry Structural Media and Rotation Effects

Download or read book Earthquake Source Asymmetry Structural Media and Rotation Effects written by Roman Teisseyre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-01 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This breakthrough book is the first to examine the rotational effects in earthquakes, a revolutionary concept in seismology. Existing models do no yet explain the significant rotational and twisting motions that occur during an earthquake and cause the failure of structures. The rotation and twist effects are investigated and described, and their consequences for designing tall buildings and other important structures are presented. This book will change the way the world views earthquakes.

Book Site Effects Study in the Mississippi Embayment and Uncertainties Evaluation in Site Response Analysis

Download or read book Site Effects Study in the Mississippi Embayment and Uncertainties Evaluation in Site Response Analysis written by Arash Yarahmadi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local site conditions have paramount influence on the characteristics of seismic ground shaking. There are several methods of investigating seismic site effects which can be classified into two major categories; common site-specific response analysis, and procedures that use solely earthquake time series like the Standard Spectral Ratio (SSR), and Horizontal to Vertical Ratio (HVSR) methods. In the SSR method, the spectral ratios of earthquake records at a certain station can be evaluated with respect to a reference station located on a nearby outcrop rock. In the first part of the dissertation, we use earthquake records to find reference stations and use that reference station to find the site amplifications at the target stations inside the Mississippi Embayment (ME). We found WHAR, W41B, and UALR seismic stations, which have reference stations characteristics, close to the ME using horizontal-to-vertical spectrum ratio (HVSR) method. Amplification factors are obtained for six target stations inside the ME using an inversion method with WHAR seismic station as the reference station. Thirty-five local and regional earthquakes in the New Madrid and Arkansas seismic zones are used to perform the inversion. The results show the fundamental frequencies of these stations are as low as 0.2 HZ to 1 HZ, which corresponds to the soft features of their local conditions. In the second part of this dissertation, we focus on finding uncertainties in the 1-D equivalent linear site response analysis (SRA). In SRA these uncertainties are accounted for by generating random cases of soil parameters. Choosing suitable randomization bounds can decrease the effects of the uncertainties in soil parameters on SRA results like predicted spectral accelerations. These bounds quantified by the coefficient of variation (COV), which can be defined for different soil parameters. Using Vertical seismometer arrays, we can compare predicted and observed surface ground motions. In this study we evaluate COVs for different parameters of the soil that are the main input parameters of equivalent linear SRA. Coefficients of variation which generate minimum root means square errors of the observed and predicted response spectra are obtained for different site classes..
