Book Evaluation of Polypropylene Drainage Pipe

Download or read book Evaluation of Polypropylene Drainage Pipe written by Edward J. Hoppe and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to conduct a field evaluation of polypropylene pipes in order to assess their potential suitability for drainage applications. The specific objectives were (1) to document the product handling during installation, and (2) to evaluate the in-situ performance under service conditions. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) selected five test locations on low-volume rural roads in Albemarle County where the field evaluation would occur. Installation of the pipes was carried out by a VDOT maintenance crew. In all cases, polypropylene drainage pipes replaced the existing corrugated metal and concrete pipes that had reached the end of their service life. No material testing of any kind was carried out on the pipes. It was understood that the limited scope of the study would not result in any conclusive assessment regarding the particular product's potential long-term performance. The dual- and triple-wall plastic pipes with nominal diameters of 30 and 48 in were supplied by ADS, Inc. The installation process was documented, and periodic field observations were conducted during the subsequent 1 year of service. As part of the evaluation, cross-sectional measurements were conducted at 2.5-ft intervals on all installed pipes. The results indicated that after 1 year of service, the maximum deformations of all pipes were less than 5 percent, satisfying current VDOT post-installation inspection requirements. No signs of crushing, buckling, or material degradation were detected. The results of the study indicate that polypropylene pipe offers a number of potential benefits when used in drainage applications. The durability of a plastic pipe must be resolved adequately in order to facilitate widespread product usage. In the case of polypropylene pipe, the issue of degradation attributable to material oxidation is extremely important. For many transportation projects, the owner must have a reasonable degree of assurance that the material will perform satisfactorily for at least 50 years. Fortunately, test methods for the durability assessment are currently available. It is possible that as users become more familiar with polypropylene pipe, they will increasingly regard it as a viable alternative in terms of life cycle costs. The product appears to lend itself to further evaluation as a promising innovative design. The report provides recommendations regarding the potential future acceptance protocol for polypropylene pipes on culvert and storm sewer projects. The recommendations include a durability assessment by an independent laboratory and a field verification of performance on the VDOT network.

Book Evaluation of High density Polyethylene Pipe

Download or read book Evaluation of High density Polyethylene Pipe written by David B. Woodham and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were installed as rundowns in the Summer of 1985 on Interstate 70 west of Denver. The HDPE pipes were able to handle the corrosive and abrasive runoff and eliminated the need for heavy equipment during placement on the steep fill slopes. No problems were observed with the use of these pipes during four and one-half years of monitoring.

Book Evaluation of High Density Polyethylene HDPE Pipe

Download or read book Evaluation of High Density Polyethylene HDPE Pipe written by Anselem H. Rumpca and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the findings and recommendations on the evaluation of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Pipe resulting from a 1996 Transportation Enhancement/Hazard Elimination Project in Martin, South Dakota. This was the first project where HDPE pipe was allowed to be installed under a state highway in South Dakota. Department researchers installed instrumentation and conducted deflection testing on a 760 mm (30 in) HDPE pipe installed under US Highway 18 in Martin, South Dakota. A horizontal inclinometer probe was used to determine vertical heave or settlement. Surface profiles were monitored with a Dipstick® Floor Profiler. Thirteen separate sets of measurements were taken between August 1996 and June 1997. Costs were determined for installation and delivery of both HDPE pipes and reinforced concrete pipes (RCP). Neighboring states were surveyed to determine their costs for storm sewer pipes as well as specifications for installing HDPE pipes. Recommendations were made to allow the installation of HDPE pipe based on information received from the state survey, literature reviews, and the results of the Martin, South Dakota Project.

Book A Service Life Assessment of Corrugated HDPE Drainage Pipe

Download or read book A Service Life Assessment of Corrugated HDPE Drainage Pipe written by Michael Pluimer and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The service life of our nation's infrastructure has become a topic of increasing focus in recent years. While above-ground infrastructure deterioration is readily apparent, the infrastructure beneath the surface can be much worse and yet is often largely ignored until it is too late. Since culverts and other buried structures typically are not inspected as frequently as above-ground structures such as bridges, the proper assessment and determination of their service life becomes very important. The design service life of corrugated high density polyethylene (HDPE) drainage pipe has been a subject of considerable research over the past several years. This paper presents a method for determination of long-term service life of corrugated HDPE pipe by utilizing some of the current widely accepted methods employed by the smooth-walled plastic pipe industry while modifying them somewhat to take into account the unique geometry and installation conditions of buried corrugated pipe. The resulting data when tested in accordance to this protocol indicate a service life in excess of 100 years.
