Book excerpt: Genotype by seeding rate interaction can play a critical role in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield potential. The objectives of this study were to i) quantify wheat yield response and ii) early-season plant establishment related to the planting technology under diverse seeding rates and with contrasting varieties relative to their tillering ability. Four studies were established at two locations during two growing seasons (2015-16 and 2016-17) at Ashland Bottoms (dryland and conventional till in the first year and no-till in the second year) and at Topeka (irrigated and no-tillage for both years) field research stations (KS, US). Two winter wheat varieties were planted with two different planting systems (singulated and conventional drill) at four different seeding rates (45, 90, 135, and 180 kg ha−1). Early-season measurements consisted of stand counts, canopy coverage (estimated via imagery collection via small-unmanned aerial vehicle systems - sUAVS), determination of early-season gaps within the stand of plants, and spacing between plants. Early season measurements (emergence progression, stand count, and canopy coverage) and biomass did not present differences among treatments. At Ashland, across 2-yrs, single factors seeding rate and genotype significantly impacted yields. Seeding rate factor positively affected yields, ranging from 4.7 to 5.4 Mg ha−1 with seeding rates going from 45 to 135 kg ha−1, respectively. For the genotype factor, the variety WB Cedar (high-tillering) presented an overall yield of 605 kg ha−1 greater than WB 4458 (low-tillering). Across locations, the seeding system did not influence yields for both years of the study. At Topeka, the seeding system significantly influenced yields in 2017, with singulation outyielding the drill system, in 161 kg ha−1. Further research is needed at a farmer-scale testing more winter wheat varieties and focusing on lower seeding rates to better understand the potential benefits of the implementation of this new technology.

The importance of worker and environmental safety and hazard reduction is emphasised and a sample risk assessment template is included. There is a description of the precautions to take for the range of enterprise activities: from tractor work to handling and storing grain. The advantages of technology such as Global positioning by satellite (GPS) and Differential GPS (DGPS) and Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) for the broadacre enterprise are explained. GPS allows for “straight line” or tramline or controlled traffic farming (CTF) or the ability to geo-reference boundaries and points in a farm or paddock. DGPS is an even more accurate measurement of row spacing, as accurate as 10 cm and often used for CTF and RTK down to 2 cm and makes CTF easier to implement with inter-row sowing. GPS also has other advantages such as mapping the changes in yield throughout your paddock and so identifying areas where it is economic to apply more (or less) inputs such as ameliorants, seed, fertiliser or pesticides. The application of variable rate technology delivers fertiliser or herbicide in quantities as required by different sections of the paddock. This saves money and also protects the environment from unnecessarily heavy rates of product. This technology can also be used to gather paddock data using remote sensing technologies such as from satellites or UAVs (Drones). Sensitivity of imagery collected this way can help identify problems occurring before the human eye can see them and can direct the grower to issues before they become too advanced and impact on productivity. It can direct you to issues in a particular paddock that need your attention before they become too advanced and impact on productivity. Other technology described includes Green on brown weed sprays which use computers on sprayers to spray plants (weeds) on bare ground. It also includes the more sophisticated green on green technology where artificial intelligence fitted to cameras on sprayers allows herbicide application to specific weeds in a crop. Cameras scan the paddocks to recognise the weeds and then control the spraying in real time to spray only weeds and the dose required and not the whole paddock. This helps save money and protects the environment. Information from remote sensing devices locates the weed populations so that you know which paddocks to scan. The advantages and issues with minimum or no-till, controlled traffic farming (CTF) and stubble retention are also discussed.

The management of this resource is a significant challenge to most agricultural systems as it can have significant impacts on yield and the environment. The use of applied nitrogen fertilisers in cereals is poor, where only 30-40% is actually used by cereals and the remainder lost to the environment by surface runoff, soil denitrification and volatilization (Ehdaie et al., 2010; Butterbach-Bahl and Dannenmann 2011). Improving cereal nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is imperative to achieve yield and quality with less direct N inputs. In this study, experiments were conducted in 2010 to evaluate the effect of N fertilizer application (0, 50, 100, 150 kg urea/ha) on the growth and yield of wheat varieties at specific locations across South Australia while a small pilot glasshouse study was conducted at the Waite Campus, Adelaide University. The field experiments were designed as a randomised split-plot with three replications for each wheat cultivar and N treatment. Plant response to N treatment was measured through estimates of plant height, leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD meter), plant spike number, grain yield, 1000 grain weight, shoot biomass weight, grain N % and final grain protein content, harvest index (HI) and NUE. Restrictions in space and large growing pots limited the controlled glasshouse study to a technical study. The results found little variability between the three field sites in Grain %N in response to increasing N provision. There was a trend of increasing grain %N at both Mintaro and Pinnaroo, which was broadly in evidence across the individual lines. Grain yield was highest at Mintaro and was double of that achieved at both Pinnaroo and Tuckey. Whereas, in the glasshouse experimental results show that there was a strong response in grain %N to increasing N provision when plants were grown over the spring/summer season but not during the autumn/winter. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) was found to be greater at low nitrogen treatment (N1) in all experiments and decreased roughly with increased N application. In general, the results indicated that wheat cultivars responded well to nitrogen application with the medium rate of application within experiments, while beyond this rate caused no significant improvements in plant growth and yield.
