Book Evaluation of Motor Vehicle and Other Combustion Emissions Using Short term Genetic Bioassays

Download or read book Evaluation of Motor Vehicle and Other Combustion Emissions Using Short term Genetic Bioassays written by Joellen Lewtas and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short-term genetic bioassays have been useful in evaluating unregulated organic combustion emissions from motor vehicles. Identification of mutagens and carcinogens in complex exhaust emissions has been greatly facilitated by the use of bioassay-directed fractionation and characterization methods. It has also been possible to evaluate the effect of fuels, engine types, and control technologies on the rates of mutagenic emissions from motor vehicles. Greater differences in the rate of mutagenic emissions have been observed between different engines (e.g., diesel vs. gasoline) and control technologies (e.g., with and without catalyst) than between different fuels. A comparative evaluation of various combustion sources indicates that motor-vehicle emissions make a major contribution to the mutagenicity observed in ambient air.

Book Short Term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures IV

Download or read book Short Term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures IV written by Michael Waters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this proceedings of the fourth symposium on complex mixtures, we continue to revise and extend our knowledge of genetic methods for the evaluation of chemical mixtures in the environment. The early chapters of this volume are devoted to new bioassay techniques that are directly applicable to the monitoring of environments contaminated with genotoxic chemicals. Microbiological methods have been further refined to meet the special needs of atmospheric monitoring so that very small samples may now be efficiently tested. New in situ methods utilizing green plants actually avoid many of the usual difficulties of sample collection and preparation and offer special advantages in monitoring wastewater, sludges, and hazardous wastes. Insects also are being employed very effectively in the evaluation of gaseous air pollutants in controlled laboratory investigations. Increased emphasis has been placed on a comprehensive assessment of the potential of complex mixtures t9 cause various kinds of genetic damage. New assays for chromosome structural and numerical aberrations in mammalian cells in vitro have been developed and are being applied in laboratory studies. Efforts to link tests for gene mutation and cell transformation in vitro with assays for tumorigenesis in vivo are contributing to the validation of the short-term testing approach. Studies comparing in vitro and in vivo data on a coal conversion by-product, on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and on mineral fibers are reported in separate papers. Later chapters are devoted to investigations on the fractionation and biological evaluation of specific chemical components within complex mixtures.

Book Mobile Source Emissions Including Policyclic Organic Species

Download or read book Mobile Source Emissions Including Policyclic Organic Species written by D. Rondia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the combined papers from a NATO sponsored meeting entitled "Mobile Source Emissions Including Polycyclic Organic Species". This meeting was held in Liege, Belgium, from August 30 to September 2, 1982, as an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW). Specialists from 13 countries met to discuss the impacts of fuel type and engine operation on emissions from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. The meeting was organized into five sessions: basic studies, biological activity, analytical methods, data bases, engineering and international research programs. The five sessions were each followed by intensive discussions on the important conclusions to be drawn from the data presented. From these session discussions, subcommittee efforts and a final group discussion on all the research results presented, a meeting summary was prepared by the editors that presents the major findings of the conference and gives detailed recommendations for future research. This summary is included at the end of the book. The summary i"nc1udes highlights of data presented, areas of research needs, recommendations for standardization of test parameters and species analyzed, suggested new methodology for characterizing mobile emissions, trends in fuel use including diesel, gasoline, anti-knock additives and blending agents, operation of catalysts, control strategies, implications from both in vivo and in vitro health effects studies, and a presenta tion of the scopeiand direction of several large international programs that are major studies of mobile source performance.

Book Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution and Human Cancer

Download or read book Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution and Human Cancer written by Lorenzo Tomatis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European School of Oncology came into existence to respond to a need for information, education and training in the field of the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. There are two main reasons why such an initiative was considered necessary. Firstly, the teaching of oncology requires a rigorously multidisciplinary approach which is difficult for the Universities to put into practice since their system is mainly disciplinary orientated. Secondly, the rate of technological development that impinges on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer has been so rapid that it is not an easy task for medical faculties to adapt their curricula flexibly. With its residential courses for organ pathologies and the seminars on new techniques (laser, monoclonal antibodies, imaging techniques etc.) or on the principal therapeutic controversies (conservative or mutilating surgery, primary or adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy alone or integrated), it is the ambition of the European School of Oncology to fill a cultural and scientific gap and, thereby, create a bridge between the University and Industry and between these two and daily medical practice. One of the more recent initiatives of ESO has been the institution of permanent study groups, also called task forces, where a limited number of leading experts are invited to meet once a year with the aim of defining the state of the art and possibly reaching a consensus on future developments in specific fields of oncology.
