Book Structural Evaluation of Asphalt Pavements with Full depth Reclaimed Base

Download or read book Structural Evaluation of Asphalt Pavements with Full depth Reclaimed Base written by Shuling Tang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, MnDOT pavement design recommends granular equivalency, GE = 1.0 for non-stabilized full-depth reclamation (FDR) material, which is equivalent to class 5 material. For stabilized full-depth reclamation (SFDR), there was no guideline for GE at the time this project was initiated (2009). Some local engineers believe that GE of FDR material should be greater than 1.0 (Class 5), especially for SFDR. In addition, very little information is available on seasonal effects on FDR base, especially on SFDR base. Because it is known from laboratory studies that SFDR contains less moisture and has higher stiffness (modulus) than aggregate base, it is assumed that SFDR should be less susceptible to springtime thawing. Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests were performed on seven selected test sections on county roads in Minnesota over a period of three years. During spring thaw of each year, FWD testing was conducted daily during the first week of thawing in an attempt to capture spring thaw weakening of the aggregate base. After the spring thaw period, FWD testing was conducted monthly to study base recovery and stiffness changes through the seasons. GE of SFDR was estimated using a method established by MnDOT using FWD deflections, and the GE of SFDR is about 1.5. The value varies from project to project as construction and material varies from project to project. All the materials tested showed seasonal effects on stiffness. In general, the stiffness is weaker in spring than that in summer and fall.

Book Development of Analytical Empirical Performance Parameters for the Structural Evaluation of Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book Development of Analytical Empirical Performance Parameters for the Structural Evaluation of Asphalt Pavements written by WMH Cortenraad and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure has been developed to estimate the residual structural life of full depth asphalt pavements based on falling weight deflection measurements. The procedure results from a study of structural pavement life predictions by experts and is based on evaluations of surveys, measurements, testing of materials, and personal experiences, on one hand, and analyses of deflection measurements, on the other hand. Discriminant analyses have been used to determine, among the deflection parameters, the best indicators of the residual structural life. With the procedure developed, pavement segments can be classified according to their residual lives. Indications of misclassification and significance are presented. Testing of the procedure revealed that the deflection data can classify segments with residual lives longer than four years very well. For all other segments, prediction of residual lives should not be based on deflection measurements alone.

Roots and Trajectories of Violent Extremism and Terrorism provides an overview of this cross-ocean program, which has involved American and Russian scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from a large number of government agencies, leading research institutions, think tanks, educational institutions, analytical centers, and consulting and commercial firms in the two countries. This report highlights challenges addressed by the academies over many years that remain of current interest as the U.S., Russian, and other governments continue to cope with old and new forms of aggression that threaten the livelihood of populations at home and abroad.

Book Electrical Measuring Instruments and Measurements

Download or read book Electrical Measuring Instruments and Measurements written by S.C. Bhargava and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written for the benefit of engineering students and practicing engineers alike, is the culmination of the author's four decades of experience related to the subject of electrical measurements, comprising nearly 30 years of experimental research and more than 15 years of teaching at several engineering institutions. The unique feature of this book, apart from covering the syllabi of various universities, is the style of presentation of all important aspects and features of electrical measurements, with neatly and clearly drawn figures, diagrams and colour and b/w photos that illustrate details of instruments among other things, making the text easy to follow and comprehend. Enhancing the chapters are interspersed explanatory comments and, where necessary, footnotes to help better understanding of the chapter contents. Also, each chapter begins with a "recall" to link the subject matter with the related science or phenomenon and fundamental background. The first few chapters of the book comprise "Units, Dimensions and Standards"; "Electricity, Magnetism and Electromagnetism" and "Network Analysis". These topics form the basics of electrical measurements and provide a better understanding of the main topics discussed in later chapters. The last two chapters represent valuable assets of the book, and relate to (a) "Magnetic Measurements", describing many unique features not easily available elsewhere, a good study of which is essential for the design and development of most electric equipment – from motors to transformers and alternators, and (b) "Measurement of Non-electrical Quantities", dealing extensively with the measuring techniques of a number of variables that constitute an important requirement of engineering measurement practices. The book is supplemented by ten appendices covering various aspects dealing with the art and science of electrical measurement and of relevance to some of the topics in main chapters. Other useful features of the book include an elaborate chapter-by-chapter list of symbols, worked examples, exercises and quiz questions at the end of each chapter, and extensive authors' and subject index. This book will be of interest to all students taking courses in electrical measurements as a part of a B.Tech. in electrical engineering. Professionals in the field of electrical engineering will also find the book of use.

Book Laboratory Evaluation of Rutting in Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Rutting in Asphalt Pavements written by Khaled Ksaibati and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using the Georgia Loaded-Wheel Tester (GLWT) to predict rutting in the laboratory was investigated in this research. The research was performed in two phases. The first phase consisted of modifying the GLWT to handle 15.2 cm (6 in) cores, developing a laboratory compaction procedure for cores, determining the optimum laboratory testing conditions, and investigating the repeatability of the GLWT. The second phase of the study included correlating rut depth values obtained with the GLWT to actual field rut depth values, utilizing the GLWT to evaluate the effects of the asphalt additive SOMAT on asphalt concrete mixes, and evaluating the rut resistance of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Results from the study show that the GLWT is capable of predicting rutting in asphalt pavements prior to construction. In addition, results from the GLWT correlate well with results from more expensive European Testers.

Book Mechanistic empirical Evaluation of the Mn Road Mainline Flexible Pavement Sections

Download or read book Mechanistic empirical Evaluation of the Mn Road Mainline Flexible Pavement Sections written by Claribel Alvarez and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilized Illinois DOT (IDOT) mechanistic-empirical (M-E) technology and Mn/ROAD mainline pavement section data and information to verify/refine/modify IDOT M-E analysis and design concepts and procedures for full-depth asphalt concrete (FDAC) and conventional flexible pavements (CFP). The Mn/ROAD mainline flexible pavements include eleven CFP and three FDAC pavement sections. Four different granular materials were used in the conventional flexible pavements. A fine-grained soil subgrade (R-value of about 12) is present throughout the mainline. Laboratory material testing results, field distress measurements, and FWD test data were used to study pavement deflection response and performance (rutting and asphalt concrete fatigue). The study demonstrated that the IDOT M-E analysis and design procedures for FDAC and CFP sections are adequate. The ILLI-PA VE structural model adequately predicts the pavement responses. The use of bi-linear (arithmetic) subgrade model and the "theta" granular material model ILLI-PA VE inputs closely replicate CFP field FWD deflection responses. The effect of granular material quality on CFP deflection response is very limited. The ILLI-PAVE FWD backcalculation algorithms are adequate for estimating the moduli of asphalt concrete and sub grade soils.
