Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and China are the world's top two energy consumers and, as of 2010, the two largest economies. Consequently, they have a decisive role to play in the world's clean energy future. Both countries are also motivated by related goals, namely diversified energy portfolios, job creation, energy security, and pollution reduction, making renewable energy development an important strategy with wide-ranging implications. Given the size of their energy markets, any substantial progress the two countries make in advancing use of renewable energy will provide global benefits, in terms of enhanced technological understanding, reduced costs through expanded deployment, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional generation from fossil fuels. Within this context, the U.S. National Academies, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), reviewed renewable energy development and deployment in the two countries, to highlight prospects for collaboration across the research to deployment chain and to suggest strategies which would promote more rapid and economical attainment of renewable energy goals. Main findings and concerning renewable resource assessments, technology development, environmental impacts, market infrastructure, among others, are presented. Specific recommendations have been limited to those judged to be most likely to accelerate the pace of deployment, increase cost-competitiveness, or shape the future market for renewable energy. The recommendations presented here are also pragmatic and achievable.

Book Evaluation of Biomass Systems for Electricity Generation

Download or read book Evaluation of Biomass Systems for Electricity Generation written by E.S. Lipinsky and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides state-of-the-art information and evaluation of alternative biomass systems for generation of electricity. The biomass systems consist of silvicultural or agricultural resources, processing and conversion technology to make biomass -derived fuels, and electricity -generating technology. The systems are delineated in energy network charts and are evaluated in matrices that display biomass -system alternatives and multiple technical, economic, and environmental -impact criteria. Biomass systems present opportunities for electric utilities to obtain a portion of their future fuel supplies from renewable resources. The potential availability of forestry biomass dwarfs other biomass resources in the United States. A few utilities already have small-scale (10-30 Mlle) wood combustion units and use biomass because it costs less than alternative fuels in their specific geographical areas. Biomass may be a particularly attractive option for smaller utilities, because the locally available resource may more nearly match the anticipated sizes of equipment needed for generation additions than would be true for large utilities that would use coal in unit trainloads. Opportunities to cooperate with the forest products industry in cogeneration ventures could be highly advantageous because of the complementary resources, skills, and equipment of the organizations. Although the emphasis in raw lignocellulosic biomass utilization probably will bein direct combustion, woody or agricultural residues might be gasified to yield low -Btu gas or medium -Btu gas for use in boilers designed for gas or oil. Existing combustion equipment designed for oil or gas might use fuels derived from a wider variety of biomass resources. Triglycerides are liquid fuels that could be made from oilseeds. They could be used in gas turbines, diesels, or oil -design boilers. Methanol derived from wood (or coal) could be used for gas turbines. Availability and price will be major constraints on liquid and gaseous biomass fuels. Terpene crops and aquatic crops could have good prospects in the 21st century because they use territory that is not in great demand; however, they are at a nearly stage of research now.

Book Assessment of Novel Power Generation Systems for the Biomass Industry

Download or read book Assessment of Novel Power Generation Systems for the Biomass Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this programme of research is to produce a method for assessing and optimising the performance of advanced gas turbine power plants for electricity generation within the Brazilian electric sector. With the privatisation of the Brazilian electric sector, interest has been given to the thermal plants and studies have been carried out along with the use of other alternative fuels rather than fossil fuels. Biomass is a fuel of increasing interest for power generation systems since it is clean and renewable. Essentially all biomass power plants in the Brazilian market today operate on a steam Rankine cycle, which has a poor efficiency. The Brazilian electricity market has paid attention on Biomass integrated gasification gas turbine (BIG/GT) combined cycle plants where solid biomass is gasified. A simple chemical model for representing the gasifier in the power plant is presented and optimisation of the gasification process has been applied. The method for assessing the performance of power plants takes into account not only energy, but it applies the exergy method, which uses the second law of thermodynamics and works out the destruction of energy inside plant components and energy losses rejected to atmosphere. A thermoeconomic model for assessing the power plant has also been described. The optimisation of the assessment method of power plants using exergy and thermoeconomics has been proposed based on genetic algorithms. This new technique has been fairly successful at solving optimisation problems and is easy to implement. The decision of applying genetic algorithms is due to the complexity of the mathematical model applied in the performance assessment of power plants. The assessment of combined cycles like gas / steam cycle, gas / air cycle, gas / steam / freon cycle, gas / air / freon cycle and chemically recuperated gas turbine have been investigated. The application of the overall assessment method helps to understand different and very expensi.

Book Economic Assessment of Biomass Based Power Generation

Download or read book Economic Assessment of Biomass Based Power Generation written by A. B. M. Abdul Malek and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomass based power generation systems can play a significant role to alleviate energy crisis and reduce fossil fuel dependency in the countries that possess abundance of agricultural and forest biomass resources. Particularly the countries to go for biomass energy in a large scale must know power and energy potential for biomass based commercial production with proper economic assessment of the possibilities. In-depth knowledge is must to assess the profitability and sustainability of the projects. Profitability measures how the investment in the project can be secured to have an ensured surplus to be shared by the stake holders and sustainability ensures the long-term existence in the business with a positive trend of gaining market share day by day or simply to be in the business. This chapter will present the details of the economic assessment of biomass- based energy projects in terms of net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), discounted payback period (DPB), and cost of energy. The economic profitability measure is a must before advancing to a venture whether it is self-financed or loan financed. So, it is hoped that readers of the chapter should develop a proper evaluation capability and know how to analyze the biomass-based energy projects.
