Book Evaluating the Performance Appraisal System in Public Universities in Saudi Arabia and Its Impact on Human Resource Decisions

Download or read book Evaluating the Performance Appraisal System in Public Universities in Saudi Arabia and Its Impact on Human Resource Decisions written by Faiz Awad Alqahtani and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In the changing and dynamic world, whilst companies endeavour to achieve their short and long term objectives in an efficient and effective manner, evaluating their human resources (HR) is regarded as an essential and fundamental process for achieving organisational objectives. However, the performance appraisal (PA) process is not only important for being the main provider of data in order to make HR related administrative decisions, but it also helps to provide information for identifying and influencing the development and satisfaction of the employees in carrying out their duties. This, in turn, contributes towards the achievement of the organisational objectives. The universities are knowledge-based organisations dependent entirely on the commitment and innovation of their teaching staff, and, therefore, they are different in terms of the organisational activity from other institutions. However, the management of universities, as educational institutions, is not that much different from other organisations. Therefore, all the management issues faced in other organisations are also relevant to universities, including HR management strategies drawn from PA systems (PASs). Hence, this study aims to evaluate the current PAS in Saudi Arabian public universities according to the perceptions of the teaching members who are subject to the PA process. It also aims to develop a new PAS based on the results developed from the research. In responding to the aim of the study, a questionnaire schedule was developed and conducted in four major public universities in Saudi Arabia. The researcher sent out 351 questionnaires, of which 197 were returned, giving a return rate of 56%. The results of the empirical analysis demonstrate that the participants are not happy with the existing PAS. In addition, it reveals: communication, transparency and organisational problems related to both the ratees who are subject to the PAS and the raters who carry out the process; poorly designed forms are used in the process; and problems related to the procedures that regulate which may undermine the appraisal process. Thus, dissatisfaction with the existing PASs is established through various empirical analyses. According to the findings of the study and the in-depth of the discussion of the analysed data, the study proposes an integrated and dynamic model for conducting the PA process. This proposed model is constructed with six stages: (1) Planning for Performance Appraisal; (2) Performance Execution; (3) Assessment (Informal Appraisal); (4) Performance Assessment (Formal Appraisal); (5) Interview; and (6) Action. In each stage several issues have been emphasised to improve overall efficiency of the PAS. The study also provides certain assumptions and recommendations for the successful development and implementation of the proposed model, which top level management in each university has to take into consideration to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of human resources.

Book The Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal Systems Employee Relations and Human Resource Management

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal Systems Employee Relations and Human Resource Management written by Grace Debrincat and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance Appraisals (PA) is a tool which is associated with employee performance evaluation. Researchers tend to disagree on the effectiveness of these systems. Academics claim that PAs improve employees’ performance through commitment, motivation and output increases, whilst providing an optimal basis for a reward system and training needs. Conversely, it is argued that PAs are flawed from inception since they are subjective, biased and unfair. The study critically assesses research on PAs and their effectiveness towards company goals, whilst identifying a set of criteria to test the extent of their effectiveness. The findings reject the notion that PAs are totally flawed and ineffective. The investigation discloses that HR Practitioners experience difficulties in assessing PAs fairness. The author recommends a number of initiatives to improve appraisees’ productivity as a direct result of PAs outcome, thus ensuring their effectiveness. Although the study reaffirms the scholars’ claim that PAs effectiveness is a very debatable subject, HR Practitioners still consider PAs as vital to manage employee performance throughout the foreseeable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first academically rigorous description and critical analysis of the Higher Education system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and of the vision, strategies and policy imperatives for the future development of Saudi universities. The government of Saudi Arabia has recognized in both policy and practice the necessity of developing its university system to world-class standard. Significantly increasing access and participation in Higher Education across a range of traditional and non-traditional disciplines is directly relevant to the future social and economic growth of the country. This book addresses the way in which Saudi Arabia is moving to develop a quality university system that balances the need for students to gain the knowledge, skills and ‘ways of doing’ necessary to operate effectively on the world stage while simultaneously maintaining and demonstrating the fundamental values of the Islamic religion and culture. The book provides a description and critical analysis of the key components of the Saudi Higher Education system, and of system-level responses to the challenges and opportunities facing Saudi universities. It is written by a team of Saudi academics and authors of international standing from non-Saudi universities so as to provide both internal and external perspectives on all issues and to place information and ideas in the context of the international Higher Education scene.

Book The Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal in the Private Education Industry in Malaysia

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal in the Private Education Industry in Malaysia written by Wee Leong and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Organisation and administration - Miscellaneous, , course: DBA, language: English, abstract: Employee performance appraisal is one of the most commonly used management tools especially in the United States and it has started being used in Malaysia about a couple of decades ago. As such performance appraisal is also one of the most widely discussed and researched areas in industrial/ organizational psychology (DeNisi, 1997; Murphy & Cleveland, 1995). The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that contribute or affect the effectiveness of performance appraisal in the private education industry in Malaysia. Specifically, this study focused on the positive influence of these determining factors to the organization and the competitive advantage that the organization can achieve. This study also aimed to determine the factors of concern about the effective implementation of performance appraisal system. An integral part of this research was to develop and empirically test a model of effectiveness of performance appraisal in the context of the private education industry in Malaysia. Based on the concepts of Longenecker’s and Fink’s (1999) System Perspective and Greenberg’s (1986) Organizational Justice Theory, this research used a questionnaire to assess Malaysian private education industry in terms of their cognition and perspective of the effective system design, managerial systems practices and system support toward effectiveness of performance appraisal, as well as to assess their perceived fairness toward achieving an effective performance appraisal system. A questionnaire survey method was used to collect primary data from emails which have been sent out to the participants. The survey yielded 171 usable questionnaires, with a response rate of 36.08 percent. Statistical analysis methods and structural equation modeling with IBM AMOS version 18.0 were used to analyze the data. The research findings revealed that the system design, managerial systems practices and system support were significantly and positively related with the effectiveness of performance appraisal. Based on the research results, managerial implications and opportunities for future research are discussed.

Book Understanding Performance Appraisal

Download or read book Understanding Performance Appraisal written by Kevin R. Murphy and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1995-01-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a previous book by the same authors, Understanding Performance Appraisal delineates a social-psychological model of the appraisal process that emphasizes the goals pursued by raters, ratees, and the various users of performance appraisal. The authors apply this goal-oriented perspective to developing, implementing, and evaluating performance appraisal systems. This perspective also emphasizes the context in which appraisal occurs and demonstrates that the shortcomings of performance appraisal are in fact sensible adaptations to its various requirements, pressures, and demands. Relevant research is summarized and recommendations are offered for future research and applications. Graduate-level students, organizational development consultants and trainers, human resource managers, faculty and scholars, and psychologists in human resource management as well as other professionals who conduct research on performance appraisal programs will find this book not only interesting but also a valuable resource.

Book excerpt: This study explores the criteria for evaluating performance, established as recently as 2017, by the Saudi Civil Services body (SCS), and which defines the methods and techniques for a fair and rational implementation of the appraisal system, and examines how employees perceive these criteria. Throughout, the research looked at the attitude of employees within public agencies, in the city of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, vis-a-vis the newly implemented appraisal system, and at how they interpreted its' modus operandi and its' findings. The study made use of Qualitative methodology, wherein data collected from five public agencies on the basis of face-to-face interviews, sought to understand the employees' perspective of the application of the current appraisal system and to fathom their experience of it. The sample size comprised 10 employees, two from each agency. The findings reveal significant public sector employees' concern regarding the new appraisal system, the degree of accuracy in implementing the appraisal process. Employees' concerns extended to the mechanisms are used to link between the appraisal grade and the allowance (pay for performance), to the nefarious influence of nepotism on the factors of fair play and accuracy. The question of how to raise the level of awareness of the new system among raters and ratees came to the fore during the face-to-face interviews.
