The authors think cognitive psychology has become too dominant in reading and dyslexia research, arguing that it should be combined with behaviourism and connectionism – in part by focusing on the concept of ‘skill’. The key components of a skill are claimed to be automaticity, awareness and shifts between them. Reading is defined as an interpretative skill, which should be viewed from the perspective of hermeneutics. The book also deals with problems in the definition of ‘dyslexia’ and proposes a method to arrive at clear and fruitful definitions. Book excerpt: Researchers in the field of literacy have suggested that using tutoring approaches with small groups of children instead of one child at a time might improve cost-effectiveness while still producing significant gains better than standard classroom instruction. Fifty-one first graders of middle socioeconomic status at an urban public elementary school were identified as being at-risk for future reading difficulties. The pre- and post-treatment assessment battery consisted of five measures developed by Marie Clay to assess a child's ability across five different reading and reading-related tasks: Letter Identification, Word Test, Writing Vocabulary, Dictation, and Text Reading Level. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. The experimental subjects were divided into groups of four to five and received a small group adaptation of the Reading Recovery program. The control subjects were divided into small groups of four to six and received the school district's standard reading instruction from their respective teachers. The results suggested that for at-risk readers, a reading instruction program in which a Reading Recovery specialist tutored small groups was more effective than classroom instruction in which teachers worked with small groups of children from their own classroom, F (5, 45) = 9.232, p
