Book excerpt: Among various interventions targeting adolescent students who read significantly below grade level, the Scholastic READ 180 is an intensive daily program that makes use of technology and combines research-based reading practices. Since the launch of READ 180, Scholastic Inc. and many schools that have deployed the program have been jointly conducting impact analyses. Although many studies maintain that students receiving READ 180 display remarkable growth on reading achievement, the majority of these studies are inadequate to provide strong evidence for causal conclusions of the intervention effectiveness of READ 180 according to the WWC (What Works Clearinghouse) Evidence Standards (2006). In addition, there is no literature found regarding the impact of READ 180 on the population of incarcerated youth. As a result, based on a randomized clinical field trial, the major purpose of this longitudinal study was to investigate if READ 180 had a meaningful impact on the reading proficiency of low-achieving incarcerated youth over time, when comparing the experimental group with a comparison group being instructed with a traditional educational reading program on reading achievement and growth. Book excerpt: Another major focus of the study concerned identifying statistical properties of the probability distribution of the estimate for the READ 180 intervention effect on low-performing incarcerated youth as well as methodologically guiding future longitudinal research with power analysis. Based upon both the bootstrap and the Monte Carlo approaches, it was believed that the intervention effect estimate was modeled quite well using the original sample with sufficient power. Power simulations via the Monte Carlo method indicated that statistical power of detecting true treatment effect is substantially influenced by the magnitude of the effect and the sample size but not the number of points in time, given that highly unbalanced data pattern is expected for similar longitudinal studies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of Scholastic Read 180 to the effect of traditional reading interventions on the reading achievement of sixth and seventh graders who had been diagnosed as reading at least two levels below grade level. A time series experimental design was used. Data were collected via the Scholastic Reading Inventory Interactive during the 2005-2006 school year in a first tier suburban, midwestern school district. Convenience sampling was used with 90 students participating in the study. The treatment group was comprised of 57 students enrolled in Read 180 while the control group was comprised of 33 students enrolled in atraditional reading improvement course. Relationships between and within the groups were statistically analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (Minium, Clarke & Coladarci, 1999). The differences between the treatment and control groups were statistically significant which allowed the researcher to reject the hypothesis.

Stage A provides tools for young struggling readers in elementary school to develop critical literacy skills. Stage B provides middle school struggling readers with topics designed for their level of reading that hold their interest. System 44 was designed for the most challenged, older struggling readers, and helps these students understand that the English language is a finite system of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. It uses validated assessment for screening and placement, research-based phonics instruction and highly motivating and age-appropriate adaptive technology.

However, effective use does not refer only to the technical parameters or statistical methodologies. Learning assessments in use todaywhether large-scale or household surveys or hybrid (smaller, quicker, cheaper or SQC)have varied uses and purposes. The present volume provides a review of learning assessments, their status in terms of the empirical knowledge base, and some new ideas for improving their effectiveness, particularly for those children most in need. It is argued here that SQC learning assessments have the potential to enhance educational accountability, increase transparency, and support a greater engagement of stakeholders with an interest in improving learning. In addition, countries need a sustained policy to guide assessment choices, including a focus on poor and marginalized populations.
