Book Evaluating Forage Sorghum and Pearl Millet for Forage Production and Quality in the Texas High Plains

Download or read book Evaluating Forage Sorghum and Pearl Millet for Forage Production and Quality in the Texas High Plains written by Joshua Andrew Machicek and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As water levels in the Ogallala Aquifer continue to decline in the Texas High Plains, alternative forage crops that utilize less water must be identified to help meet the forage demands of the livestock industry in the region. The purpose of this two year study was to evaluate forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) Leeke] for forage production and quality. Three different harvesting regimes were implemented to evaluate forage productivity and regrowth of both crops throughout the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. These different regimes included: three 30 day, two 45 day, and one 90 day harvest. Pearl millet and forage sorghum total dry matter production in 2016 ranged from 3.96 to 6.28 Mg DM ha−1 and 5.38 to 11.19 Mg DM ha−1 and in 2017 ranged from 6.00 to 9.87 Mg DM ha−1 and 6.53 to 15.51 Mg DM ha−1, respectively. A 90 d harvest in the Texas High Plains will maximize water use efficiency and DM production; however, some forage quality may be sacrificed.

Download or read book Evaluating Forage Sorghum Cow pea and Pearl Millet cowpea Production and Quality in the Texas High Plains written by Elora-Danam Ellison and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite declining water availability in the semi-arid southern High Plains, demand for high-quality forages by the livestock and dairy industries continues to grow. Alternative forage crops with high water use efficiencies should be explored to meet this demand. Grass-legume intercrops may improve the nutritive value of the forage product, but viable intercrops must maintain yield levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]-cowpea [Vigna unguiculate (L.) Walp] and pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) Leeke]-cowpea intercrops for forage production and quality. Four planting arrangements per grass species were included in the 2020 and 2021 growing seasons to evaluate forage production of sorghum-cowpea and pearl millet-cowpea intercrops under limited irrigation. Treatments were sole pearl millet, sole forage sorghum, sole cowpea, or mixtures of either pearl millet-cowpea or forage sorghum-cowpea planted in the same row, alternating rows (millet-cowpea 1:1 or sorghum-cowpea 1:1), or two rows alternating (millet-cowpea 2:2 or sorghum-cowpea 2:2). Intercrop biomass yields ranged from 11.6 to 16.2 Mg ha-1 in 2020 and from 7.2 to 12.4 Mg ha-1 in 2021. Results from both study years indicate that the studied intercrops are able to maintain yield, quality, and WUE levels similar to sole pearl millet and forage sorghum.

Book Sustainable Cropping Systems

Download or read book Sustainable Cropping Systems written by Jeffrey A. Coulter and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global crop production must substantially increase to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. This is constrained by the availability of nutrients, water, and land. There is also an urgent need to reduce the negative environmental impacts of crop production. Collectively, these issues represent one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Sustainable cropping systems based on ecological principles are the core of integrated approaches to solve this critical challenge. This special issue provides an international basis for revealing the underlying mechanisms of sustainable cropping systems to drive agronomic innovations. It includes review and original research articles that report novel scientific findings on improvement in cropping systems related to crop yields and their resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors, resource use efficiency, environmental impact, sustainability, and ecosystem services.

Book Forage Production and Quality of Forage Sorghum and Sunnhemp Intercropped at Different Seeding Rates

Download or read book Forage Production and Quality of Forage Sorghum and Sunnhemp Intercropped at Different Seeding Rates written by Haley M. Mosqueda and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas High Plains region is primarily known for grain and forage crop production for cattle feed. It is important to determine alternative crops that provide optimal nutrition to cattle and are drought and heat tolerant due to the increasing importance to improve crop water use efficiency in crops grown in the region. Forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is well-established in the Texas High Plains as a drought tolerant forage for cattle that often requires additional feed to provide adequate amounts of protein and other necessary nutrients for livestock. By intercropping a forage legume such as sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) with forage sorghum, crude protein may be increased. However, the optimal intercrop seeding ratio of sunnhemp to sorghum to improve crude protein content and maintain sufficient biomass is unknown. In 2020 and 2021, a field experiment was conducted using sunnhemp intercropped at three seeding rates (16.8, 33.6, and 50.4 kg ha-1) with forage sorghum at four seeding rates (0, 2.8, 5.6, and 11.2 kg ha-1) under drip irrigation. One objective of this research was to evaluate the potential for the growth of sunnhemp in a semi-arid environment such as the Texas High Plains. Another objective of this research was to determine the effects of intercropping sunnhemp with forage sorghum at different seeding rates on dry matter production and forage quality. Results from this study indicate that sunnhemp does not affect dry matter and crude protein content in a forage sorghum-sunnhemp intercrop when harvested at 50% flowering of sunnhemp.

Book Manual of Laboratory Procedures for Quality Evaluation of Sorghum and Pearl Millet

Download or read book Manual of Laboratory Procedures for Quality Evaluation of Sorghum and Pearl Millet written by Manel I. Gomez and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is for use by scientists and technicians who screen and evaluate varieties of sorghum and pearl millet for their grain quality. It is based on experience in agronomy and food technology acquired over several years in SADC/ICRISAT's Sorghum and Millet Improvement Program in Zimbabwe, hwre there is a focus on generalized screening methods for broad grain qualities rather than detailed component analysis of a molecular nature. Laboratory procedures, including qualitative and quantitative methods, were compiled from existing sources and modified in several ways for the Program's use. Quality parameters were focused on grain, on primary products such as flour, meal, and malt, and on such secondary products as baked flour, steamed flour, and porridge. The grain and these products were evaluated using physical and chemical methods, and a database was created to serve as an empirical reference document derived from field and laboratory results. The manual's first section, on grain-quality evaluation, describes rapid techniques for routine screening. The qualitative parameters used are: color, pericarp thickness, testa, endosperm texture, and hardness. Quantitative parameters comprise 100-kernel weight, Agtron readings, and moisture, floaters, dehulling loss, milling yield, size fractions, and water absorption expressed as percentages. Eight chemical methods of evaluation are described in the second section, among which only rapid tannin analysis forms part of routine screening tests. The last section (...).

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
