El propósito de esta investigación, consiste en evaluar hidrodinámicamente Humedales Construidos con Flujo Horizontal SubSuperficial (HC-FSS) a escala de laboratorio sin plantar, mediante el análisis de la distribución de tiempos de residencia (DTR) obtenidas con Rodamina WT (RWT) y Cloruro de Litio (LiCl) como sustancias trazadoras. Se compara el desempeño de estos trazadores en el estudio de los efectos de la presencia de biomasa en el medio filtrante, diferentes relaciones geométricas (L:A) y configuraciones en los reactores (Bafles). En presencia de biomasa, el TDH real se disminuyó en un 34% respecto al TDH teórico, y aunque la tendencia hacia la disminución de los TDH reales se presentó con los dos trazadores, el LiCl reportó TDH mayores (23.45 ) que la RWT (17.62) con significancia estadística (P

Todos estos interactúan entre sí para formar un ecosistema, el cual desde hace varios años se ha venido usando como una tecnología alterna en el tratamiento de aguas residuales. ¿Por qué los humedales? Los humedales son los ecosistemas de mayor productividad biológica en la tierra, estos están frecuentemente habitados por plantas nativas y en ellos viven multitud de animales incluyendo mamíferos, aves, reptiles, anfibios y peces, estos últimos no son comunes en otros ecosistemas. Aunque las plantas están rodeadas de agua en abundancia, estas pueden soportar su escasez y también pueden soportar la ausencia de elementos esenciales como el oxigeno. Por esto los humedales son el mayor grupo de ecosistemas en la tierra. Al poseer esta alta tasa de productividad biológica, los humedales pueden transformar muchos de los compuestos contaminantes presentes en las aguas residuales, en otros menos dañinos y lo que es mejor pueden hacer que estos formen parte de los procesos biológicos del humedal. (Kadlec &Knight, 1996). Por estas razones los humedales están siendo usados en los proyectos de depuración de aguas residuales, ya que son muy eficientes a bajos costos de mantenimiento y consumo de energía. Aunque en Colombia se están empezando a implementar este tipo de tecnologías, en la mayoría de los casos el éxito de estos tratamientos biológicos depende en gran parte de la climatología del sitio. Con este estudio se pretende evaluar parámetros de diseño, de tres humedales construidos a escala piloto, bajo condiciones ambientales locales y así dar soporte a los proyectos a emplear en un futuro.
