Book Evald Tang Kristensen

Download or read book Evald Tang Kristensen written by Joan Rockwell and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evald Tang Kristensen was one of the great collectors of first-hand accounts of peasant life and culture, perhaps the greatest, not only in Denmark but in the world. For sixty years and more (1867-1929) he worked incessantly at finding, recording, collating and getting into print the largest body of this material ever assembled by one person. His published work is more extensive (more than 30,000 pages) than that of any other Danish writer, including N.F.S. Grundtvig and Georg Brandes; while the great majority of his collected material remains unpublished to this day: he left his heirs, the Danish Folklore Archives (Dansk Folkemindesamling) a collection, said to be three times as much again, of material in ordered form which has never been published and which awaits analysis. Here can be found the journals of his collecting journeys and the notebooks in which he recorded his interviews; his correspondence with various notabilities such as Svend Grundtvig; letters to his family (marked Not to be used!); other memorabilia, such as dreams recorded by him during the last 25 years of his life; and some of his collection of books, including several copies of Cyprianus, a well-known and widely-circulated book of magic. A collection, mostly of his personal effects - his staff and knapsack - is to be found in the museum in Herning, and another at Vejle Museum.

Book excerpt: Danish folklore is a rich topic often overlooked, as so few people have gone to the source and diligently written down all the oral traditions of this region. One man changed this, bringing true perseverance and a real joy for the collection of his countries folk tales. This book is the story of that man, Evald Tang Kristensen, with some of the tales he collected. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book Danish Folktales Legends and Other Stories

Download or read book Danish Folktales Legends and Other Stories written by Timothy R. Tangherlini and published by . This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the people of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania confronted a military superpower and achieved independence in the Baltic "Singing Revolution". When attacked by Soviet soldiers in public displays of violent force, singing Balts maintained faith in non-violent political action. As an inspiration to all nations, the non-violent Baltic independence movement revolutionised each country through singing and smiling. The "Singing Revolution" is indeed the essence of the Baltic way, and began in 1987 as a public revolt against Soviet restrictions on free speech and assembly. The revolutions and following elections in 1990 resulted in three separate governments and a declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. The book seeks to answer questions such as why the struggle for Baltic independence came to be called the Singing Revolution? What did they sing? And what role did singing play in the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian campaigns of political mobilisation and non-violent action? Furthermore, and uniquely for this publication, it explores, in great depth, the songs that gave the revolution its name, translating and interpreting over 110 choral, rock, and folk songs in their poetic, cultural, and historical context.
