Book Eva and Otto

Download or read book Eva and Otto written by Tom Pfister and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eva and Otto is a true story about German opposition and resistance to Hitler as revealed through the early lives of Eva Lewinski Pfister (1910–1991) and Otto Pfister (1900–1985). It is an intimate and epic account of two Germans—Eva born Jewish, Otto born Catholic—who worked with a little-known German political group that resisted and fought against Hitler in Germany before 1933 and then in exile in Paris before the German invasion of France in May 1940. After their improbable escapes from separate internment and imprisonment in Europe, Eva obtained refuge in America in October 1940 where she worked to rescue other endangered political refugees, including Otto, with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt. As revealed in recently declassified records, Eva and Otto later engaged in different secret assignments with the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in support of the Allied war effort. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Eva and Otto gave each other hope and strength as they acted upon what they understood to be an ethical duty to help others threatened by fascism. The book provides a sobering insight into the personal risks and costs of a commitment to that duty. Their unusually beautiful writing—directed to each other in diaries and correspondence during two long periods of wartime separation—also reveals an unlikely and inspiring love story.

Book Eva s Story

Download or read book Eva s Story written by Eva Schloss and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Publisher: Many know the tragic story of Anne Frank, the teen whose life ended at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. But most people don't know about Eva Schloss, Anne's playmate and posthumous stepsister. Though Eva, like Anne, was imprisoned in Auschwitz at the age of 15, her story did not end there. Together with her mother, Eva endured daily degradation at the hands of the Nazis. She survived the prison camps, but it would be decades before Eva was able to tell her survivor's tale. Concluding with a revealing new interview with Eva, this moving memoir recounts without bitterness or hatred the horrors of war, the love between mother and daughter, and the strength and determination that helped a family overcome danger and tragedy.

Book After Auschwitz

Download or read book After Auschwitz written by Eva Schloss and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES AND INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER 'A standalone classic . . . An incredible book, remarkable for its unflinching gaze at the past and also for its hope' GUARDIAN, 'Books to Give You Hope' 'Remarkable . . . Makes it clear just what an achievement it was starting over again, when survivors were not only economically and physically depleted, but emotionally devastated, too' SCOTSMAN Eva was arrested by the Nazis on her fifteenth birthday and sent to Auschwitz. Her survival depended on endless strokes of luck, her own determination and the love and protection of her mother Fritzi, who was deported with her. When Auschwitz was liberated, Eva and Fritzi began the long journey home. They searched desperately for Eva's father and brother, from whom they had been separated. The news came some months later. Tragically, both men had been killed. Before the war, in Amsterdam, Eva had become friendly with a young girl called Anne Frank. Though their fates were very different, Eva's life was set to be entwined with her friend's for ever more, after her mother Fritzi married Anne's father Otto Frank in 1953. This is a searingly honest account of how an ordinary person survived the Holocaust. Eva's memories and descriptions are heartbreakingly clear, her account brings the horror as close as it can possibly be. But this is also an exploration of what happened next, of Eva's struggle to live with herself after the war and to continue the work of her step-father Otto, ensuring that the legacy of Anne Frank is never forgotten.

Book The Hitler I Knew

Download or read book The Hitler I Knew written by Roger Moorhouse and published by Greenhill Books. This book was released on 2023-04-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Up to the last moment, his overwhelming, despotic authority aroused false hopes and deceived his people and his entourage. Only at the end, when I watched the inglorious collapse and the obstinacy of his final downfall, was I able suddenly to fit together the bits of mosaic I had been amassing for twelve years into a complete picture of his opaque and sphinx-like personality." - Otto Dietrich When Otto Dietrich was invited in 1933 to become Adolf Hitler's press chief, he accepted with the simple, uncritical conviction that Adolf Hitler was a great man, dedicated to promoting peace and the welfare for the German people. At the end of the war, imprisoned and disillusioned, Dietrich sat down to write what he had seen and heard in twelve years of the closest association with Hitler, requesting that it be published after his death. Dietrich's role placed him in a privileged position. He was hired by Hitler in 1933, and was a confidant until 1945, and he worked and clashed with Joseph Goebbels. His direct, personal experience of life at the heart in the Reich makes for compelling reading.

Book Eva Braun

Download or read book Eva Braun written by Heike B. Gortemaker and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of Germany’s leading young historians, the first comprehensive biography of Eva Braun, Hitler’s devoted mistress, finally wife, and the hidden First Lady of the Third Reich. In this groundbreaking biography of Eva Braun, German historian Heike Görtemaker reveals Hitler’s mistress as more than just a vapid blonde whose concerns never extended beyond her vanity table. Twenty-three years his junior, Braun first met Hitler when she took a position as an assistant to his personal photographer. Capricious, but uncompromising and fiercely loyal—she married Hitler two days before committing suicide with him in Berlin in 1945—her identity was kept secret by the Third Reich until the final days of the war. Through exhaustive research, newly discovered documentation, and anecdotal accounts, Görtemaker turns preconceptions about Eva Braun and Hitler on their head, and builds a portrait of the little-known Hitler far from the public eye.

Book excerpt: A book for the young and young at heart -- written in the spirit of ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THE WIZARD OF OZ. ANNA & OTTO tells the story of a girl who wakes up on the edge of a forest, where nothing looks familiar. Soon, the girl realizes she can't remember her name, her age, what she looks like, or where she came from. A dog named Otto arrives, names her Anna, and they embark on a journey to learn the girls identity -- and cure her amnesia. Along the way, they meet a variety of offbeat characters -- both friend and foe -- who offer clues, advice, directions, and sometimes misdirections. Anna & Otto sometimes don't know if they're coming or going, which only makes sense -- because their names are spelled the same backwards and forwards.
