Book TeX XML and Digital Typography

Download or read book TeX XML and Digital Typography written by Apostolos Syropoulos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-11-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers that were accepted for presentation at the International Conference on T X, XML, and Digital Typography, jointly held with E the 25th Annual Meeting of the T X Users Group in Xanthi, Greece in the sum- E mer of 2004. The term "Digital Typography" refers to the preparation of printed matter using only electronic computers and electronic printing devices, such as laser-jet printers. The document preparation process involves mainly the use of a digital typesetting system as well as data representation technologies. TXand E its offspring are beyond doubt the most successful current digital typesetters, while XML is the standard for text-based data representation for both business and scientific activities. All papers appearing in this volume were fully refereed by the members of the program committee. The papers were carefully selected to reflect the research work that is being done in the field of digital typography using T X and/or its E o?spring. The problems for which comprehensive solutions have been proposed include proper multilingual document preparation and XML document processing and generation. The proposed solutions deal not simply with typesetting issues, but also related issues in document preparation, such as the manipulation of complex bibliographic databases, and automatic conversion of text expressed in one grammatical system to a more recent one (as for the Greek language, converting between monotonic Greek and polytonic Greek). The conference is being graciously hosted by the Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi and by the Greek T X Friends. We wish to thank Basil K

Book excerpt: The Information Society is taking shape around us. Already, information society technologies (IST) affect every aspect of how we live, work and play, and they seem set to have an even greater impact in the future. To realise the full potential of the Information Society, however, its benefits should be accessible to all. The Information Society Technologies Programme, part of the EU's Fifth Framework Programme for research and technological development, is working towards a vision of the future that puts the user at the centre of IST development. In this vision, the technology is almost invisible as it blends into our everday environment. People are able to access IST applications and services wherever they are, whenever they want, and in the form that is most natural for them. This book presents a snapshot of the IST Programme at the present time, describing technical challenges and policy issues addressed by the work programme and highlighting some of the on-going RTD projects. It focuses on the use of IST within three key settings: by individuals and in personal spaces; by enterprises and in the workplace; and by public services and society at large. Enabling technologies which underpin future applications and services across these scenarios are also described. Covering IST development from many different perspectives, the book shows how the Programme is contributing to an Information Society where technology serves the needs of people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing awareness of environmental issues has led to increasing demand for goods produced from natural products, including natural fibres. The two-volume Handbook of natural fibres is an indispensible tool in understanding the diverse properties and applications of these important materials. Volume 1: Types, properties and factors affecting breeding and cultivation is an essential guide to a wide range of natural fibres, and highlights key techniques for their improvement. Part one reviews key types and fundamental properties of natural textile fibres. The production, identification and testing of a range of cotton, bast, silk and wool fibres are discussed, alongside bioengineered natural textile fibres. Part two goes on to explore the improvement of natural fibre properties and production through breeding and cultivation, beginning with a discussion of fibrous flax and cotton. Improved natural fibre production through the prevention of fungal growth is explored, along with the use of genetic engineering and biotechnology to enhance desirable characteristics. Finally, the wider impact of natural textile production is discussed, using wild silk enterprise programs as an example. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, the two volumes of the Handbook of natural fibres are essential texts for professionals and academics in textile science and technology. Book Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining

Download or read book Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining written by Mieczyslaw A. Klopotek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains articles accepted for presentation during The Intel ligent Information Processing and Web Mining Conference IIS:IIPWM'04 which was held in Zakopane, Poland, on May 17-20, 2004. This conference is a continuation of a series of 13 successful symposia and conferrences on Intel ligent Information Systems, organized by the Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences, devoted to new trends in (broadly understood) Artificial Intelligence. The idea of organizing such meetings dates back to 1992. Our main in tention guided the first, rather small-audience, workshop in the series was to resume the results gained in Polish scientific centers as well as contrast them with the research performed by Polish scientists working at the universities in Europe and USA and their foreign collaborators. This idea proved to be attractive enough that we decided to continue such meetings. As the years went by, the workshops has transformed into regular symposia devoted to such fields like Machine Learning, Knowledge Discovery, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Based Systems and Reasoning, and Soft Computing (i. e. Fuzzy and Rough Sets, Bayesian Networks, Neural Networks and Evo lutionary Algorithms). At present, about 50 papers prepared by researches from Poland and other countries are usually presented. This year conference devotes much more attention to the newest devel opments in the area of Artificial Intelligence, related to broadly understood Web mining.

Book Quantitative Microbiology in Food Processing

Download or read book Quantitative Microbiology in Food Processing written by Anderson de Souza Sant'Ana and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microorganisms are essential for the production of many foods, including cheese, yoghurt, and bread, but they can also cause spoilage and diseases. Quantitative Microbiology of Food Processing: Modeling the Microbial Ecology explores the effects of food processing techniques on these microorganisms, the microbial ecology of food, and the surrounding issues concerning contemporary food safety and stability. Whilst literature has been written on these separate topics, this book seamlessly integrates all these concepts in a unique and comprehensive guide. Each chapter includes background information regarding a specific unit operation, discussion of quantitative aspects, and examples of food processes in which the unit operation plays a major role in microbial safety. This is the perfect text for those seeking to understand the quantitative effects of unit operations and beyond on the fate of foodborne microorganisms in different foods. Quantitative Microbiology of Food Processing is an invaluable resource for students, scientists, and professionals of both food engineering and food microbiology.
