Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this volume responds to a key debate in the European Community, extant since the signing of the Single European Act (SEA) in 1986, in exploring the role of transportation in the creation of a Common Market with free movement of goods, people, capital and services. Critical of the EC's compromise on transport between economic principles and political realities, this book seeks to address issues of international cooperation, lack of common approach and differences in national law and political systems along with the question of finance. Theo Kiriazidis responds to the EC's argument on each transport sector in turn and examines how the existing transport system in 1994 could be better managed.

Book Towards User Centric Transport in Europe

Download or read book Towards User Centric Transport in Europe written by Beate Müller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to build a sustainable transport system for people and goods that meets the needs of all users, a truly integrated and seamless approach is needed, and the full potential of transformative technologies has to be exploited. This can only be achieved if user-centeredness, cross-modality and technology transfer become the paradigm of shaping future transport. Mobility4EU is a project funded by the European Commission that focusses on these topics and is working on delivering an action plan towards a user-centric and cross-modal European transport system in 2030. The authors of this contributed volume are dedicated scholars and practitioners connected to Mobility4EU either as partners or external contributors. Their contributions focus on understanding user needs and report on technologies and approaches that support the tailoring of a user-centered cross-modal transport system for passengers and freight on long distances and in the urban context.

Book Trans European Networks

Download or read book Trans European Networks written by D. Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trans-European networks (TENs) are a key theme in the process of integration for the EU as it enters the next millennium. The attainment of these networks stretches across many different areas of European policy and economy. The development of TENs is about establishing a series of infrastructure networks that complement the broad changes in the European economy facilitated by the development of the Single European Market. The book examines the development of TENs in the three key sectors: transport, energy and telecommunications, noting key themes and issues that need to be faced in their attainment. Attention is also paid to common problems in their realisation most notably the financing problems. The EU's strategy to develop these networks is essentially market-led yet, as the financing issues indicate, a consensus between the states in allowing commercial investment in infrastructure is proving elusive.
