Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Less than two years after the pandemic hit Europe, EU real gross domestic product (GDP) is back to precrisis levels, with the third quarter of 2021 marking a return to the level seen in the fourth quarter of 2019. Thanks to a rapid, large-scale and comprehensive policy response, the crisis seems to have left fewer scars than originally feared. At the microeconomic level, policy intervention prevented major disruption, but the resilience of firms and jobs to a full phasing out of support has yet to be tested, and further scarring may yet become apparent. At the macroeconomic level, uncertainty remains about the effect of new waves of the pandemic and the eventual phasing out of emergency economic measures across Europe, as well as the design of the new policy normal. Looking forward, the risk of a recovery that is asymmetric for individuals, firms and countries remains. Meanwhile, the challenges of the climate transition and digitalisation have become more urgent than ever, and the recovery offers an opportunity to address them. This report looks back at the impact of the pandemic on individuals, firms and countries within the European Union. It also looks forward, at how to use the recovery as a springboard for transformation. Keeping an eye on investment, it looks at the effectiveness of policy support and assesses evidence of post-pandemic scars. It examines how European firms are using the pandemic and the recovery as an opportunity to prepare themselves for a changing world. It also discusses the role of public support in ensuring a just recovery, preventing rising inequalities. While the swift policy action implemented so far prevented an economic depression, the recovery requires further coordinated efforts across Member States. To prevent an asymmetric recovery and raise long-term growth prospects, the following priorities are key: Maintain the momentum on high-quality public investment, assuring the implementation and maximum impact of the Recovery and Resilience Facility, while avoiding abrupt fiscal adjustments that may hinder the recovery. Catalyse private investment through risk-sharing instruments to mitigate ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty, including a shift from generalised support for firms to targeted incentives for transformation, particularly for digitalisation and the climate transition. Create the conditions for an acceleration of the digital transformation of the EU economy, with supportive infrastructure, information security and data governance, an acceleration of digitalisation in the public sector and an intensified focus on training and skills. Reinforce climate policy guidance and implement regulatory proposals to close the remaining gaps in the European Union's decarbonisation strategy, including plans for the energy transition and the further integration of the EU energy markets, and provide the right incentives to capitalise on EU leadership in climate-related innovation.

Book EIB Investment Report 2023 2024 Key Findings

This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European economy is under pressure. Growth is slowing and competitive challenges are rising, all while EU firms navigate the demands of the green transition. Coordinated support from national governments and EU institutions proved critical after the COVID-19 pandemic, helping Europe to bolster its resilience to future shocks and spurring the investment needed to transform and modernise the economy. As a result, progress was made in digitalisation, energy efficiency, decarbonisation and reinforcing supply chains. The pace of change needs to accelerate, however, even as investment becomes harder to sustain. To remain competitive, the European Union and its members need to improve productivity, encourage innovation, address skill gaps, develop new technologies and supporting young, dynamic firms. The report, which is based on the EIB Group's annual Investment Survey, provides insights on how EU firms are dealing with these pressures, and whether they are taking the necessary steps to transform their businesses. These key findings, provide a short accessible summary of the main report's messages.

Book EIB Global Report The Impact

Download or read book EIB Global Report The Impact written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Investment Bank (EIB) has a long track record as a provider of development and climate finance, working with EU institutions, Member States and partner countries in the EU neighbourhood, sub-Saharan Africa and around the world to foster sustainable development and bring real benefits to people's lives. The challenges faced by our partners around the world are many: economies struggle to provide adequate jobs and basic infrastructure, while dealing with the growing needs for climate action and protection of the environment. These challenges have been aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic and the ramifications of the conflict in Ukraine. As of the start of 2022, the EIB's development finance role is being taken forward and intensified through EIB Global. The new structure builds on the strength and experience that the EIB has gained working outside Europe to mobilise more development and climate finance, and increase impact. The purpose of this report is twofold. First, it provides an overview of the Bank's activities outside the European Union in 2021, with a focus on the expected results, complemented by reporting on the results already achieved by past operations. Second, it elaborates on the context of the Bank's engagement in countries outside Europe, examining different development challenges and how they confront different regions, drawing on our own development research.

Book excerpt: Covering EIB Global's activities in 2023, this annual report shows how these activities are aligned with EU priorities and initiatives in different regions. It details the results and impact achieved by EIB Global's activities and provides an update on how the Bank is improving its mode of delivery, in order to enhance that impact. It is divided into four main sections: A tailored, regional approach: This section reports on the activities of EIB Global. Beginning with a special focus on Ukraine, it then covers Enlargement countries, the Neighbourhood regions, sub-Saharan Africa and finally Asia and Latin America (including Central Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean). It examines the challenges in each region and how EIB Global is working with partners to address them in line with EU enlargement, regional and development policy. Delivering on EU priorities: This section describes how EIB Global is investing in social and economic infrastructure under the Global Gateway Initiative, helping partner countries step up climate action through both mitigation and acceleration, and expanding access to finance for entrepreneurs and small businesses to unlock job creation and growth. Two further parts focus on promoting gender equality through EIB Global operations, and how we work in fragile and conflict-affected states. Enhancing impact: This section examines the progress that EIB Global is making in achieving an improved mode of delivery under its Strategic Roadmap, in order to enhance and increase the impact it delivers. It covers key deliverables such as increasing local presence, the roll-out of advisory services and new products and initiatives, and how the Bank is learning from evaluations. Tracking results: Maximising EU impact is the ultimate goal of EIB Global. This section therefore describes how the Bank is managing for results, and reports on project results in detail, including results expected at appraisal and those achieved at project completion. It also reports on the Bank's additionality, carbon footprint and modelled impact on jobs.

Book EIB Investment Survey 2022 European Union overview

Download or read book EIB Investment Survey 2022 European Union overview written by European Investment Bank and published by European Investment Bank. This book was released on 2022-11-17 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique insight into the corporate investment landscape in the European Union examines companies' finance needs and the constraints they face. The 2022 edition delves into the aftermath of the economic shock produced by the COVID-19 crisis and the readiness of firms to cope with the new massive shocks that are testing corporate resilience. The report assesses how response and recovery programmes put in place by the European Union and by national governments have helped firms, but also shows how firm perceptions of investment conditions are overshadowed again by recent events. In addition, the EIBIS EU overview presents firm reactions to outstanding structural transformation needs and more specifically the extent to which European firms are addressing the need to make their businesses more green and digital. It also highlights how European firms counter sudden shocks, for example by assessing their responsiveness to international trade disruptions. The survey is based on interviews with 12 000 companies across the 27 European Union countries, and it includes a benchmark sample from the United States. This overview provides the aggregated results for the European Union.
