Book Corporate Governance in the European Insurance Industry

Download or read book Corporate Governance in the European Insurance Industry written by O. Ricci and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate scandals at the beginning of the 2000s and the recent global financial crisis have renewed the attention of academics, regulators and practitioners to agency problems and possible solutions in the financial sector. Since that time, much thought has been given to new regulations and international corporate governance standards, in an attempt to guarantee prudent and sound financial management. While much of this thought has been focussed on the banking sector, Corporate Governance in the European Insurance Industry provides a unique perspective on the subject, focusing on the insurance industry and asking some important theoretical and practical questions. Are insurance companies systemically relevant, and does the existing regulation provide adequate protection for customers and guarantee financial stability? Is regulatory intervention consistent with economic and financial theories? And crucially, is this intervention consistent with empirical evidence of the behaviour and performance of insurance companies? The first part of this book provides the reader with a comprehensive review of current academic studies on the topic; the second part moves on to examine the regulation of corporate governance and its recent evolution after the global financial crisis. Within a context of vivid debate in the financial services industry, the issues explored in this book will be of value to anyone with an interest in insurance corporate governance and regulation. It is also a key source of research for academics in insurance and finance, as well as PhD students and post-graduate students in relevant subjects.

Book Bancassurance

Download or read book Bancassurance written by Nadege Genetay and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banking markets have experienced a general trend towards conglomeration in recent years which has been facilitated by the deregulation of banks' activities. A particular feature of financial conglomeration has been the diversification of banks into insurance (especially life) activities - a phenomenon known as bancassurance. Many European banks have adopted bancassurance strategies but there has been little empirical evidence investigating the implications of this strategy for bank performance. This text aims to redress this imbalance by providing a comprehensive analysis of the development and market characteristics of the bancassurance phenomenon and empirical evidence on the risk/return effects of bank diversification into life assurance business.

Book Financial Regulation in the European Union After the Crisis

Download or read book Financial Regulation in the European Union After the Crisis written by Domenica Tropeano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the financial crisis, new regulatory measures were introduced which, along with changes in monetary and macroeconomic policy, have transformed the global financial structure. However, this new financial structure displays various fragilities. A new shadow banking system has grown both inside and outside the traditional banks and the divergence between core and periphery countries’ banks has increased further due to both the new regulations and the European Central Bank’s very peculiar interventions. Following Minsky’s approach, this volume explores the interplay between monetary policy, regulation and institutions in the aftermath of the great financial crisis. Minsky’s insights are used to interpret the recent regulatory changes and consider how they have affected the evolution of banks and financial markets. The unfortunate conclusion is that the changes in financial regulation introduced in various jurisdictions and inspired by the work of the Basel Committee, have not succeeded in thwarting the instability of the economic system. Instead, the mix of policies implemented so far has brought about increased fragility in the financial system. Minksy’s work on financial stability offers alternative solutions which policy-makers need to consider to resolve these issues. Financial Regulation in the European Union After the Crisis is an important volume for those who study political economy, banking and monetary economics.

In a concluding chapter, the author proposes changes to the definition of the dependent agent permanent establishment currently enshrined in the model treaties and their respective commentaries, aligning such a definition to the regulatory framework in which insurance companies conduct their business in countries other than that of incorporation. As a highly significant and timely contribution to the study of the interplay between insurance regulation and tax implications, this very original work will prove of especial value to practitioners in international tax and insurance law, as well as professionals in the financial services sector and tax academics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belgian financial conglomerates (FCs) remained important players in the Belgian financial sector, despite significant restructuring following the global financial crisis. FCs operated in multiple streams of the financial sector, especially in banking and insurance. Owing to their economic reach and use of regulated and unregulated entities across sectoral boundaries, FCs presented a challenge for sector-specific supervisory oversight. The Executive Board suggested a pragmatic supervisory approach, which needs to be streamlined and applied more uniformly to contain FC-specific risks.

Book European Central Banking Law

Download or read book European Central Banking Law written by Christos V. Gortsos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of European Union (EU) central banking law, a field of EU economic law which emerged in the late 1990s and has developed rapidly ever since. European central banking law pertains to the rules governing the functions, operation, tasks and powers of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks (NCBs) of EU Member States. Systematically presenting and analysing the role of the ECB as a monetary and banking supervisory authority, the book discusses its changing and developing responsibilities following the financial crisis of 2007-2009 and the ongoing fiscal crisis in the euro area. The book also highlights the ECB’s significant role in relation to the resolution of credit institutions, as well as, conversely, its relatively limited role in respect of last-resort lending to EU credit institutions exposed to liquidity risk. The related tasks and powers of the ECB are presented in light of its interaction with NCBs within the Eurosystem, the European System of Financial Supervision, the Single Supervisory System and the Single Resolution Mechanism. Providing a detailed analysis of the legal framework governing (mainly) the ECB’s monetary policy and other basic tasks within the Eurosystem and its specific tasks in relation to banking supervision and macro-prudential financial oversight, this comprehensive book will be of interest to researchers, practitioners and students in the fields of EU monetary and banking law.
