The book is strong on the ever-changing image of the airlines and their passion for new and modified liveries, which can be confusing for those interested in the subject. The up-to-date coverage of current liveries will be of particular value to aviation modelers. With the decline in the number of new military aircraft entering service since the end of the Cold War, many aviation enthusiasts have renewed their interest in the world of civil aviation. There is also a broader public interest in the sector as more and more of us use airlines more regularly. This book provides a good general survey of the airlines and airliners presently operating in Europe. It will be an attractive and colorful book, which will attract a wider distribution and sale than many of the more specialist military and historical aviation titles on the market.

EU Law on State Aid to Airlines follows a multi-disciplinary approach by relying on the fundamental concepts of economics and policy analysis. This approach allows grasping the wider implications of this sector's issues for the field of State Aid, in particular in the light of the 'more economic approach' and the 'balancing test'. Furthermore, additional perspective is given on State aid law in the air transport sector through comparative analyses of regulations in the United States and Switzerland and outlooks on international relations. Finally, the book presents a number of recent Commission decisions with a dramatic importance for the air transport, with the opening of formal investigation procedures regarding alleged State aid to low-cost airlines operating from regional airports all over Europe. Magnus Schmauch is Legal Secretary at the EFTA Court in the Chambers of judge Pall Hreinsson. Previous experience includes four years as a lawyer at the Court of Justice of the European Union. Entry barriers render US airline markets non-contestable. However, these studies do not allow an empirically based conclusion whether entry barriers are differently effective in preventing entry. Moreover, since previous studies exhibit no intra-firm perspective, they cannot ascertain whether a particular entry impediment prevents entry equally effective irrespective of potential entrant's characteristics. Comparable studies about the recently liberalised European airline markets are not available. This study fills these gaps by investigating European airline managers' perception of entry barriers. It turn out that some barriers are perceived to be significantly more effective than others. The perception of the effectiveness of a certain entry barrier, however, varies considerably among airline managers. Airlines' and respondents' characteristics contribute to explain this variance. Einleitung: Diese Arbeit untersucht mit Hilfe einer eigenen erhobenen empirischen Basis die Existenz von Markteintrittsbarrieren im europäischen Passagierluftverkehr nach dessen vollständiger Liberalisierung im Jahre 1997. Folgende Forschungsfragen werden beantwortet: - Welche Markteintrittsbarrieren nehmen europäische Fluggesellschaften wahr? - Sind alle Markteintrittsbarrieren aus Sicht der europäischen Airlines gleich wirksam? - Betrachten alle europäischen Fluggesellschaften eine bestimmte Markteintrittsbarriere als gleich wirksam und worauf sind mögliche Unterschiede zurückzuführen? Gang der Untersuchung: Kapitel 1 gibt eine kurze Einführung in die Problemstellung des Themas und definiert die verwendeten Begrifflichkeiten. Kapitel 2 stellt den bereits in den Literatur zugänglichen Wissensstand dar. Zunächst diskutiert es die Grundlagen der Theorie des bestreitbaren Marktes ( contestability theory ). Most of the research laid its focus on specific industry levels such as the individual airline, the aviation industry in general or macroeconomic aspects. In this context, these studies tried to anticipate market reactions triggered by the EU-ETS by analyzing specific issues such as the financial impact on airlines, changes in competitive behavior or implications for the overall industry development. As a consequence, the existing studies took only a limited market view and made assumptions about expected developments in specific fields of the aviation industry. However, at the time of writing this thesis, conclusions about the scope of impact could hardly be drawn from existing impact assessments because of the wide range of issues that exceeded the scope of most impact studies. Hence, a broader research approach is needed which takes different analytical perspectives to describe the scope of impact of the EU-ETS and depict potential effects for the aviation industry.

For this purpose, flight schedules data was used to derive entry and exit statistics for a set of chosen inner-German routes over a period of thirteen years. Data was analysed in cross-sectional and longitudinal manner while identifying different entry waves and examining incumbent behaviour with respect to entry deterrence strategies. Furthermore, the market’s concentration and structure was tracked to allow a conclusion with respect to the market’s contestability after liberalization. The results suggest the existence of remaining structural barriers to entry and depict a rather unsatisfactory overall state of the post liberalized market.
